Konami Whips Up Castlevania Judgment, An Online 3D Fighter For Wii
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 5:40 AM on July 2, 2008
It's official. Castlevania Judgment, the first 3D fighting game to bear the Castlevania brand, is coming to the Wii this Fall. Series producer Koji "Iga" Igarashi is helming the project with a little help from manga artist Takeshi Obata, the man in charge of character designs this go 'round. Obata may be best known for his work on Death Note and the Blue Dragon manga adaptation. The title was revealed in this month's Nintendo Power.
The Castlevania Judgment release points out that the Wii game will feature head-to-head battles via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Fans of wireless signals will also be thrilled to learn that Castlevania Judgment can wirelessly connect to the Nintendo DS via Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, unlocking "bonus gameplay content". Guess that confirms this little rumour, eh?
Full release is after this.
Release Marks Iconic Franchise's Next Generation Debut on Wii and its Entry Into the Fighting Game Genre
Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced that Castlevania Judgment, the first Castlevania title in the fighting game genre, is currently in development exclusively for Wii. Developed by legendary Castlevania series producer Koji "Iga" Igarashi, Castlevania Judgment bridges the past with the present as it pits several generations of the Belmont clan against a host of characters that span the franchise's 22-year history.
"We wanted to take this addition to the signature Konami franchise in a direction that really sets it apart from the previous Castlevania titles in the series," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. "The Wii Remote and Nunchuk capabilities, along with the iconic characters, make this game the ideal entry point into the fighting game genre. This combination is certain to thrill old and new fans of the franchise. "
With 3D environments rendered on Wii, players can choose sides in an epic battle of good versus evil using iconic Castlevania characters designed by famed manga artist Takeshi Obata. Using the motion-sensing controls of the Nunchuk and Wii Remote, players can slash, stab and whip their way across a variety of stages and environmental elements with various surrounding objects as weapons. Select characters can also set traps and make use of monsters on the field to achieve victory in a clash of epic proportions. As an added bonus, players are also able to compete head-to-head using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and connect with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on the Nintendo DS to unlock bonus gameplay content.
Castlevania Judgment will be released in North America Fall 2008 on Wii.

I think Konami made TMTF, which was one of the best non-Capcom fighters on the SNES.
I have faith they'd do a good job. It is Wii, so shovelware potential is always there though.

This is the most fucked thing I've read this week. Seriously yo. A Castlevania fighting game headed by a guy who has been primarily making Super Metroid clones one after the other for the last 12 years? Don't get me wrong, Castlevania is the fucking shit but really? REALLY? A FIGHTING GAME?
How many guys with whips can there be in one damn game? Should be some kind of rule against that. Oh well, WiFi could be cool if it plays well.
Fleaman and Merman better both be playable characters. And shit might as well throw Vamp from MGS in there too! He might try and fuck the entire game cast but at least he's got a badass croth knife!

Who in their right mind green lit this game? What handful of people in the world were clamoring for a Castlevania fighting game?
You can already see this playing out, game scores in the 5.0 - 7.0 range, tepid audience reaction, poor sales, and then the blame that the majority of the Wii's owners don't want traditional games like fighters. They want Castlevania Carnival Games.
Of course the truth is nobody wants a Castlevania fighting game, casual, hardcore, you name it.

You're right about that, it does fit Castlevania and would be interesting to see his changes on the classic characters.

I hope it ends being a good game... but i don't know, it's kinda like the wii developers want us to have weird spin offs, but this closes the circle i guess.
We got an action adventure soul calibur and now we have a fighting castlevania.
I hope it ends up being good, but i don't lnow, i have a weird feeling about this.

Takeshi Obata? As in the guy who drew Death Note? Thats just perfect. I've always liked his art. He's no Ayami Kojima, but he's damn sure better at drawing Gothic characters than that hack from Dawn of Sorrow. Interest has now been heightened simply due to my curiosity on how his rendition of classic characters will look like. Nice.
Alright, I'll give this a chance, but please don't screw this up people, and do me a favor by allowing the use of either Gamecube controllers or Classic controllers, because, to me, Fighters + Nunchuk and Wii Remote = Cluster fuck. Make it happen.

Of course, like just about everyone else, I'd like to see a massive, 2-D Castlevania for a current console (PS2 included), but I suspect I'll be more than happy with Order of Ecclesia on the DS.

I dont think people hate this game, that would just be plain ignorant. It's just kinda hard not to be skeptical about a fighting game coming from a company that
A: doesn't make them
and B: a producer who's never made one in his life and even moreso than that one that's going to implement motion controls which less than a handful of 3rd party devs have been able to get a grasp on
i love weird ass spinoffs but when they're fighting games like this a lot could easily go wrong with the gameplay itself to make the experience a bad one.

I don't understand all of the Castlevania hate. I actually loved Castlevania 64 and the sequel (when I owned my N64) - I say bring it on - the last titles that graced the DS and the GBA were rather fun too...the mythology of Castlevania spans more history and any other long running video game series, however the downfall I've seen is all of them seem to use the same type of architecture. Give us a digitized Dracula's Castle or something...I understand that the one with Soma were more "futuristic" in the year, but still seemed old-world. Give us Dracula with Lasers!

My dog puked in mine so it doesn't work anymore. but really, not a damn soul commenting on this has played it and yet everyone is quick to say it's going to suck. What the hell? This could go either way.
If Nintendo stuck to what they were good at we would have never gotten Mario Kart or Super Smash Brothers or Metroid Prime. Goldeneye would have never been made since Rare never did a FPS game prior to that. Konami may not have the best track record in fighting games but i can see that many of you here either don't remember Turtles Tournament Fighter on SNES or just don't know about it but it was one of the best fighting games for a home console back in that era.
I remember when Capcom first announced Xmen vs Street Fighter and message boards were alight with people saying it was going to suck ass. Only for it to come out and be one of the best VS games ever made. Before you jarheads go on about Konami's fighting game track record, Capcom is responsible for the original Street Fighter which is god-awful.

Well, I don't think anyone saw this one coming.
Currently, I don't see anything impressive about the game and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a generic fighter despite its seemingly unique gameplay mechanic features with the use of items and interactive environments. Of course, we really don't know jack $hit about it yet so it is far too early to judge it.
With that said, Konami, I hope you know what you are doing here.

@rekenner: Alucard can kick the crap out of any human, anytime, anyplace. Because is only half-human, after all. Besides, he has the sword familiar. That guy's invecible. Even his dad will be running away from him.

I hope IGA knows what the hell he is doing. This is a risky move for the series.
I want it to be good, so I can leave Brawl behind forever, but it's highly unlikely. I hope they have people that are experienced with the Wii, as well as people who know good fighting game mechanics.
As a pretty big Castlevania fan, I hope for the best. Not gonna hope for a revolution though...because I'll probably be playing Order of Ecclesia more anyway.

IGA is making this. That means its gonna be quality.

Bah, Konami!! Do a big-budget 2D Castlevania on the big screen, not this. 2D games can sell big; just look at Smash Brothers! ahh, it's no use, they're not even reading this.

Takeshi Obata should stay the hell away from Castlevania, he just doesn´t know the feel of this franchise.
The blonde loli with pink clothes was particularly bad as was the "Light" with huges muscles.
The guy knows how to draw but he´s just not cut for this.

@Phantasos:
Pink clothes? you mean the gothic blonde chick who wears black clothes? BTW it's a good thing you have such an insight into how well Takeshi Obata knows the "feel of this franchise." Otherwise I might have thought the art direction could be good.
Thank you for taking time to post your pebbles of knowledge on our gaming blog.
Also, his name is "Light" so unless you go around calling your friends "the Jake" and "the Ron" you should rethink how you type people's names.

Jesus, nobody even wants to give this game a chance. Sure precedent says this game will suck and it's an odd choice, but seriously? No one has an open mind?
At least this game won't have to worry about balance if the game is truthful to the series... At least in the later parts of the series. Soma, Julius (he probably won't be playable anyway), Alucard, and Johnathan all seem to be around the same level at the end of their games: F-ing strong.
The earlier characters aren't nearly as godly.
Also, Johnathan and Charlotte should totally be Ice-Climbers-tag-team. That would be sexy if they got it to work right.
I'm cautiously (really cautiously) optimistic- you should be too.

This is displeasing. I would've preferred a 3d rendered 2d sidescrolling castlevania. You can put this 3d fighting mode in as a bonus but a whole game? Not thinking so.
Now, if this were an arena fighting game with 4 players or more, I might be interested. If it's just 2 head to head...
not so very much interesting to I.
Hey, Technical question, if you were to put a simplistic 2d fighting game such as castlevania on wii, and reserve most of your horsepower for graphical processing, would it be possible to put out a 720p game on wii? I mean the original xbox had some games rendered in 720p right? Is there an actual hardware or software limitation that does not allow the wii to put out 720p graphics aside from horsepower?
Regardless, I think a 2d game with dynamic lighting and a pretty good 2d physics system with the ability to whip and swing your way through and around the levels would be pretty freakin sweet.

Everyone wants a 2D console Castlevania. But its no reason to hate this fighting game.
Remember that a new 2D Castlevania for a console is a serious thing. It has to be perfect. The art takes a long time. If theres going to be a 2D SotN Castevania type game, its better for the 360 or PS3. Why? Because its a long awaited title. Because the controller is just better for Castlevania. And Because the systems are capable of better HD graphics. I think its just a matter of time for us to see a 2D Castlevania on whichever system.
But realize its retarded to exclaim "omg what r they doing?!?!". They are making something fun and cool, thats what they are doing. Dont hate Castlevania Judgment just because it wasnt the type of Casltevania you expected.
I hope all of you buy this game so I can get your Wii Friend codes and give you a proper Belmont style ass whipping.

What the hell is wrong with Konami? How many crappy games is it going to take for them to realize that Castlevania + 3D = no fucking good? How many times do the fans have to scream that we want a 2D Castlevania on a console instead of a handheld?
It's very easy, Konami... just give us what we WANT instead of 3D waggle-crap. Leave the waggle for minigame compilations and put a 2D Castlevania with decent controls on a console. That's ALL you have to do, Konami, think you can handle it?

@Zerbrechen:
@Ronin_Sixshooter:
Definitely.
Konami: "We're making another Metroidvania."
Internets: "Stop making the same game over and over again!"
Konami: "We're making a 3D fighter Castlevania."
Internets: "WTF r u doin??? We want a 2D Metroidvania!"
Ok, I admit that I share most of these thoughts. I want to see something different, but I also want to see console Metroidvania, possibly downloadable. I recognize the hypocrisy.
That said, why the hell do people feel the need to judge things they nothing about? Were most previous attempts to go to/from a fighter from another genre successful? No. Does that mean that there is some universal law that it can't be done? No.
Be skeptical. I encourage it. I am too. But don't act like you can predict the future.

Wait. Has anybody made a good fighter for the Wii yet?
(And no- SSBB doesn't count.)
If people like Namco, who make great fighting games all of the time, can't get a Wii-specific port of a proven fighting game to work, how the hell does Iga think he's gonna pull it off???
I'm officially dubbing this one Castlevania: Masters of Teras Kasi.

Smells like a setup for a fall. Then of course they'll blame the Wii and it's audience and show why games like Silent Hill, Contra, Metal Gear Solid, etc. just isn't for the system ("Wii owners aren't hardcore enough").
