Mario & Zelda Teams 'Both Hard At Work' On Wii Games
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 AM on July 16, 2008
During Nintendo's E3 address earlier today, company boss Satoru Iwata took to the stage and, amongst his talk of demographics and smiles and warm, fuzzy rainbows, spoke a little about the important things. Like what the Mario & Zelda teams are up to. He said specifically that both teams were "hard at work" on "new games for the Wii", but stopped short of saying just what it was they were working on. We'll hope that they're working on, you know. New Mario & Zelda games. And not Wii Cook or something.

"We'll hope that they're working on, you know. New Mario & Zelda games. And not Wii Cook or something."
I don't. I think the worst thing about Super Mario Galaxy was the fact that it was *just another god damn Mario game*. Why can't we have a new story? Ok so Nintendo doesn't do story based game (with the exception of Zelda, but even then, it's all alot of the same year after year). I mean, Mario Galaxy was a GREAT game, but I'm sick of being a little red plumber rescuing a - *sigh* - kidnapped princess.
Wasted potential FTL.

Hehehe. So funny because it's so frighteningly possible.
After Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess I get the feeling it will be a while till another 'core' entry in either of the series - but I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Gotta keep that gravy train flowing somehow, because eventually people are going to wake the fuck up and realize the wii is a pile of liquid ass. Then again, Nintendo would also need to wake up and quit putting out the same game over and over, lest people realize that they are doing just that.

@VakeroRokero: Actually the Zelda game was a launch title, and considering the last month or two had to be testing, debugging, and disc printing (meaning a lot of the team was free) they'd have enough time to be able to show *something* if they really wanted, it's just that they feel no need to since they can cart out the next iteration of Wii (Fill in the Blank) and sit on it ad infinitum.

Even if they are actually working on another Mario and Zelda, what assures us that it will come out some time soon or even for the Wii. Zelda TP was announced for the GC and it took forever to come out, it was out for the Wii before it was even released on the GC. The fact that they cannot even tell us what games they are working on means that we have a long time coming before we see these games on stores.

@Yadama: Yeah... Sony fans ditch them at "600 dollars" but Nintendo fans stick with them through all their crap, and I gotta say... You guys are the most long suffering crowd in video game history
There aren't many Sony fans (me included) that would stick with them if things were as hard on the PS systems as they were with the gamecube and even the 64... And Nintendo doesn't need YOU anymore, since they have the grandmas and little girls and business men and newsweek and new york times proclaiming what geniuses they are while their pockets get lined with money.
I'm finding it hard to stick with Sony now, the only thing that's making me barely hold on, on a thread, is that they give more freedom to their devs than either of the other 2. Then again, though, you have the MOST freedom on the PC, and I'd love to help revive the PC industry, but I doubt it will happen... Piracy and clichés have all but killed it...

I really hope they work on something good. I am really sick of these little mini games they keep releasing. I was really mad when they showed the new remote attachment with "true 1 to 1". It is nice to have...when you have games that really take advantage of it. Had they followed up the announcement of the attachment with a new Zelda with true 1 to 1 for combat, or say, something like a joint project with Sega for a new shinobi game with the new attachment, that would have been great use for the add on. Instead we get treated to throwing a damn frisbee at a dog and slicing logs. -_-; Lame. Great potential wasted on another easy cash in for Nintendo. I used to really love Nintendo. What happened? Yes, this formula is working for them, but man, are they ever pissing off their old fans.

@Aerokii: It's not necessarily about the IPs themselves, it's about the innovation or the changes in gameplay that go along with them. If the GC version of Metroid had been a side-scroller, would we praise it as much as we did the FPS Prime? What about Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 and their foray into 3D.
The IPs will continue to pull people back, but it's the gameplay mechanics that do evolve and continue to work well generation on that keeps people playing them over and over.

Oh, right. It's because despite the fact we've alerady played something like it, they've given us a new one that is quite fun to play, and entertaining. They are allowed to keep using the same IP's because the same IP's still work.

Just a few games that Nintendo could have mentioned they were "hard at work" on and successfully pleased the core gamer (or at least succeed in not making us feel we were now entirely irrelevant to Nintendo):
F-Zero
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Mario
Zelda
Wave Race (although there looks to be a mini Wave Race in Wii Sports 2)
Kid Icarus
Donkey Kong Country
Starfox
Luigi's Mansion 2
Hell, even mention Mario Golf or a new Mario Party and a few of us would be happy. There was literally nothing. And Reggie made the funniest comment of this year's E3. When asked on G4 if he thinks the hardcore gamer would feel left out he responded, "How could they think that? There's Animal Crossing!!!" (that's paraphrasing, but he really did refer to Animal Crossing as the "hardcore" game of the show).

@VakeroRokero: Well, I agree nick.soapdish. Being a GREAT IP really helps, but you gotta change things up subtly. Which is what God of War and GTA both did too.
It depends on some things. I wouldn't want to play a Zelda FPS or RTS as much as I'd want an action adventure, or maybe a full out Zelda RPG (THAT would make me happy.) A good game is based heavily on gameplay, but good IP's have a lot to do with excellent characters and story. I'm quite fond of Kratos, so that's GoW... and I guess it doesn't apply as much for GTA, but eh, it works, so why knock it?
What I really want though is an LoZ game that returns to Link's awakening, a bit. Maybe throw Link onto an exact replica of the island, and have him figure out how it got here, and how he got there.

Direct quote time. Iwata said: "Of course, I myself am aware that great numbers of game players around the world do demand increasingly gorgeous games. And we at Nintendo, continue to challenge ourselves to meet these needs. Today I want to let you know that our internal team which creates Mario games, and the one that makes Zelda games are both hard at work. They will bring new titles to Wii."
So both titles are aimed towards the "core" gamer, or more likely aimed at both audiences like Mario Galaxy.
The Zelda team always makes Zelda games, but I'm a little surprised by his comment, since I was expecting a much more casual take on Zelda similar to 4-swords or Dragon Quest Swords and likely featuring Wind Waker graphics. The Mario team that worked on Galaxy was the team who made Donkey Kong jungle beat, so their game could be pretty much anything. I actually doubt that it's a Mario game, even though his phrasing did suggest it.

@AZRoboto: Here's a crazy idea, maybe Nintendo delayed the game until the motionplus came out for 1-1 hammer swinging! Maybe they've been working on the game in secret this whole time and it will be out this year october 30th!! Maybe i should wait until I'm in bed and asleep before I start dreaming...sigh.

@Yadama: I feel exactly the same as you, man. I supported Nintendo all through their dark years, when the Gamecube was ridiculed and scorned by everyone. Because it had such fantastic games: Metroid Prime, Paper Mario 2, Resi 4, Tales of Symphonia, F-Zero GX, Killer7, SSBM, Pikmin 2 and Batallion Wars. Now that the tables have turned and Nintendo is suddenly the market leader, there is precious little for everyone who bought a Gamecube, because NOBODY who stuck with a Cube is into casual games! I've got Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, SSX Blur, SSBB, Zack & Wiki and No More Heroes. Is there anything to look forward to? Mad World. That is IT. Nintendo have shown an arrogance on the level of pre-PS3 release Sony, and I for one am so very, very angry.

@Benjo: well put.
now that mario has covered paper, land, world, and galaxy, (as well as most major sports) where else can he go?
@Gene-ius: I had a gamcube too, but i'm not pissed at Nintendo. They've been expanding and improving the functionality of the Wii, which is way more than they did for gamecube.
and ssx blur was awful.

You wouldn't know it. It's not like he sets the Christian standard, what with all his Bible-ignoring.

@Luckyjim:
Was that really necessary? I'll never be able to play a Mario game again.

They have, but they're lazy. When you give Wii Fit a marketing budget ten times as much as the one for Metroid Prime 3 you can expect the latter game to sell ten times less. Which is more-or-less what happened. However, what Nintendo have gone since is hold that up as an example of Wii gamers 'not wanting hardcore games' [paraphrased] and therefore they can justify to themselves taking the cheap & easy route rather than actually putting the effort into games which they've become renowned for in the past. And they *can* stop third parties making such useless games by refusing them on the console; rubbish like Petz needs to get Nintendo' say-so, which they got, but where's the drive to get the new Prince of Persia on the Wii? (For that matter, where was Call of Cuty 4's Wii version?) With Mario Galaxy-level graphics? It's non-existent. So I will act as if it is their fault because, as the approval board, it is. What they *can* do is make more of an effort to serve the hardcore gamer network. I mean, put some of their stupidly-large amount of money into drawing decent IPs towards the Wii in the form of motion-friendly Wii versions and stop having the arrogance to suggest Animal Crossing is satisfactory as the only offering to the hardcore crowd. We don't even have F-Zero, dammit. With all their resources Nintendo could afford to serve their entire fan base but they're not.
(Good point with the ToS2, though. I'd forgotten about that.)

@Gene-ius:
And I also ask you, what do you expect Nintendo to do, excatly? They've put out their franchises in record time, you get ToS2 out in a few months. Nintendo can't force third parties to put good stuff on the Wii, so stop acting like it is their fault.

@Gene-ius: The conduit, kid icarus, and pikmin off the top of my head. And, to be honest, nintendo did push out a lot of top notch software in their first year and a half. Metroid, mario, smash bros, papermario and battalion wars. We also got a few really good games from capcom and even a few from EA. Look at your list of good gamecube games. How many of those are nintendo published? 6 out of the nine? I've got five listed in the first year of the wii's existence, whereas your six took the cube's entire lifespan. Nintendo's not slacking, we're just in a craptastic dryspell.
Warioland looks good too. Much more appealing to me than the 8bit style of megaman.

@dArk_stAr: Lies! I loved SSX Blur. Sure the big motiontricks weren't that great but the rest of the game worked really well. And sliding from the top of peak 3 to the bottom of peak one with no interruptions was incredibly fun and strangely relaxing for me. I'd like to see them do a sequel, but with a much bigger mountain, with both crazy and normal trails from top to bottom.
