Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on July 4, 2008
WiiWare game Mega Man 9 has been dated for Japan. The game will be out this September as confirmed by this week's Famitsu. The 8-bit game hasn't yet gotten a Western release date. That's what E3 for!

Im like a Huge Megaman fan and have been playing for as long as I can remember but I honestly do think if Capcom doesnt release this on the 360 or PS3 at sometime that they really have screwed alot of fans over. I mean I was very excited for this game but now I will just wait till it comes to XBLA to buy it

I read the interview with Inafune on Gamesradar yesterday, some quotes:
"For the first time in many years, we are developing an 8-bit game. This opportunity has awoken my sprit as a game designer."
"The beauty of Mega Man actually lies in its simplicity and a fine mixture of simple gameplay, puzzle-like thrill of maneuvering tricks at the last minute, and battles."
"XBLA and PSN enable HD output, but that alone does not make all the HD games interesting. HD technology does not make a game interesting. The quality of gameplay makes games interesting."
"The aura of excitement around the classic title is coming back. The result will certainly meet the expectations of the fans that have long waited for it. I hope their passion will spark a fire in new generations."
stuff like this fills my heart with joy...

Relax, it's capcom. It could have 'made for and only on nintendo' on the title screen, heck it could say that before, during and after every single boss, I'll still get to play this on my 360.
Single platform release.... heh, good one Capcom, you're still a crack up.

Bring it on, and I still put the first Mega Man in the top 5 crazy hard breaking controller games of all time. Last bosses on NES Ninja Gaiden are up there also. I always loved the Mega Man series, maybe if this sells well Konami will hire some devs and do some 2-D Castlevania on the Wii-Ware.

@penty85: No, I really think they're serious about this. And think about it; do you really think this project actually cost CAPCOM a lot of money? If a hundred people spend $10 on this game, I think they'll make profit. hahaha. CAPCOM has other projects that are more important. This one seems like a fun, side project.
I think it's actually quite respectable and loyal for CAPCOM to go back to the company that helped make them big, especially in the Mega Man (Rock Man) franchise. Seeing a new 8-bit Mega Man on a Nintendo console makes me feel like a kid again.

On another note, I think the bigger news on Wii@Everyday (as much as I love Megaman) is a full page scan of the JUMP page on Chrono Trigger DS. Someone translate that sucker quick!
I can't tell if those are screenshots from the DS version, or just screenshots of the Super NES/PlayStation version to remind people what this game looked like before. The picture of Magus's castle in a "DS two-screens-as-one" resolution leads me to believe it will be a 2D remake, not a 3D.
Which is fine by me, really. The game looked and sounded great as it was.

I would honestly be more confused if the new title WAS on the other systems. Megaman X never got ported to the Genesis, and no one bitched about that. The series has always favored Nintendo, and that's where most of its fanbase lies.
Provided I have a Wii by the time this game comes out, I'll be buying it, 100%.

@wwm0nkey:
Not getting Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, or Bionic Commando: Rearmed unless they're released on Wii due to the fact Capcom screwed over A LOT of fans who don't own a 360 or PS3. I do, but still won't be getting until it goes multiplatform.
Thanks for the nice template. See how well it works for other games?
It's WiiWare only. Deal with it. Would it be nice if it was multiplatform? Of course. It'd be great if there were no more platform exclusives, because all they're good for is fueling fanboy flamewars over whose e-penis is bigger. But that's not the way things are, and whining about it like that won't change a damn thing.

@hagridore:
"Lets be honest: It took them a weekend to put the entire game together"
Step 1. Go get a few buddies together to make an NES game.
Step 2. Drawing all the sprites and programming the game in processor assembly (a language very few people use to program games these days), come back and tell me how long it took you.
Oh, and let's be honest: this would be your first time making an NES game as all your prior experience was working with Nintendo's handhelds, GBA and DS? You also can't draw the artwork by hand and digitize it as sprites---every character has to be drawn by hand. You'll use antiquated hardware and software to score the music (which can only have 4 simultaneous channels of sound, one of which is normally reserved for sound effects), and you'll have the expectations of legions of fans who grew up playing these games twenty years ago to live up to.
Good luck!

@RichMeisterMan: I've sat here for like five minutes trying to figure out how to adequately communicate the awesomeness that is classic Mega Man, which is surprisingly hard to do. Nostalgia is no doubt a factor, but there's so much more to it. You play as a two-dimsenional blue man with a CANNON FOR AN ARM who goes, 'PEW PEW PEW', jumping from uniquely themed level to uniquely themed level, battling the coinciding bosses who resemble costumed monkeys in flamboyantly themed hats. The gameplay, and more specifically the early bosses, can be hard at first, but that's only because it's a 'learn to run and dodge OR DIE' scenario...this is however, enjoyable (for many of us, anyway). As you advance, you gain the abilities of your fallen foes, steadily making you more powerful with the completion of each level - an idea that may not sound too novel nowadays, but in the day was the bees knees. Moreover, every boss has a weakness to another boss' power, so if you play the game in the logically proper order, the first boss will undoubtably be the hardest boss you face until the end of the game (not necessarily a good thing, but worth noting). If you're outright not fond of the classic gaming style which sees more difficulty than babying, then the game'll likely not be for you, despite any amount of attempted convincing. Though for many of us, it'll be [SALVATON!!@!] a glorious breath of air from the past. If you're at all open to the experience described herein, I'd fully suggest you try it for yourself. Now here goes to hoping Capcom doesn't completely screw this up somehow; I'll return to vigilantly glaring their general direction until September, for all of our sakes.

@hagridore: Let's be honest; you're a dumbass.
Creating Mega Man 9 is much harder than that. They have to recreate the original look and feel of the older games, while adding in new bosses and a couple of the mechanics that got tossed on from the X series and such. You're one of those idiots who just takes one look at the screenshots and goes LOL NO EFFORT before you take the time to realize that they are trying to make it look like the original games!

@walkman1022: So what you're saying is... eye for an eye! Great philosophy!
Nintendo has been CONSISTENTLY fucking over 3rd parties since the 80s when they were, essentially, the only game in town.
They continued this process through the Super Nintendo, N64, and Gamecube. They have also continued doing so, and in doing so fucking themselves over, by developing an underpowered system.
Has it proved successful? Certainly. And do I have fun with it? A lot of the time. But do I sometimes wonder what it would be like if the system had a louder roar under the hood. Why yes. Yes I do. Most 3rd parties are developing games that the Wii just plain can't handle, at least not with a LOT of graphical reworking.
Instead, they've forced game companies to actually DO SOMETHING ORIGINAL which... they're not big fans of. They'd rather do the same thing year after year and not work very hard on porting things from other systems.
To think that Mega Man 9 won't end up on other systems when its developed by Capcom and will be a game that will take advantage of (probably) none of the Wii's motion sensitive control options... is just plain silly.
Still, I'll be buying it on the Wii to enjoy even a timed exclusive for my poor little system.

I could see it remain exclusive simply because weird things sometimes happen in this industry, but I wouldn't really understand it. No one has really given a good reason for that to happen.
I don't really know a 100% how the digital distribution works in terms of putting the game available and making it work on different systems, but I would think that the cost of that has to be very minimal especially for an 8bit game. Also there is no risk of loosing money like when disk games sit on the shelf if they don't sell, so you can only profit from making it multiplatform if you already went through the trouble of making the game.
Also, the game doesn't seem to use any hardware function exclusive to the Wii (good thing for that, big sigh of relief), and obviously the ps3 and 360 can handle anything that's done on this game.
Anyways, I think that it is good when fans complain about the exclusivity even if it sounds a little whiny because that could actually make Capcom realize that there is some market for the game on other consoles and it is profitable to release it there. We may not be able to enjoy all games out there in all platforms, but this particular game seems to hit the nostalgia factor in a lot of people out there, and without a good reason to make it exclusive then why do it?
(oh yes, and as you can see by my avatar I'm a MM fan and really want to play this game, would get it on day one if I could)

I think Capcom is still trying to get Nintendo to forgive them for fucking them over with the "Big Five Exclusives" on the Gamecube (particularly Res Evil 4). I mean, look how long it took for Square after FFVII. So, no, don't expect MM9 on other consoles anytime soon. Nintendo doesn't let companies back in their good graces too easily.

i would like to see capcom make more niche titles like this and arcade titles for the wii, while making the big name titles like resident evil, devil may cry, and lost planet for ps3/360. one of the reasons the dreamcast and japanese saturn are my 2 favorite consoles is kuz of capcoms niche titles. x-men vs street fighter, cyberbots, dungeons and dragons, cannon spike, powerstone, and gunbird were all must haves for me. some of those made it to playstation systems, but they just werent the same. now if sega also made their quirky/hardcore titles like jet set radio, streets of rage, a 2d shinobi only for the wii, and let all that other garbage like condemned, viking, and the club be for ps3/360.. id cristen the wii the best thing ever.

@Poochy: Man, do you really think they are programming the game on a NES???
Always has been said that the game has a retro look, it's done to look as the 8 bit NES games.
What's more of a problem for me is the reuse of the graphics from early games (MM2, MM1), when the last games have very good graphics for the NES era.
You can look at the evolution of the graphics of the NES Megaman games here [artofwar.free.fr]
About exclusives... I'm a Megaman fan sice MM2, but this game is not making me buy a Wii. There is no even a physical copy of the game...

I have to say this brings back memories. I felt a little twinge of excitement when I saw 2D game screenshots from Japan. It was almost like I was a kid again truthfully. I remember the days reading EGM, Gamepro, and Nintendo Power in awe over Japanese screenshots.
Pity that Japanese game design isn't what it used to be. I remember Western game companies really putting some trash out back in the day.
Maybe it is just me appreciating my gaming heritage as it were,but I am going to brown nose Kotaku for a second. Thanks for bringing back childhood memories!
