Mega Man 9: WiiWare ONLY - False alarm. Please, go ahead and disregard this morning's post regarding Mega Man 9 being available for the PSN and XBLA. Capcom have since removed those listings from their E3 lineup (calling it "a mistake"), and have confirmed the game will only be appearing on the Wii.

@LittleBigPlaneteer, @LittleBigPlaneteer: Woooow, seriously??
God forbid somebody makes a retro-styled game for the sake of enjoyment and/or nostalgia. I'm pretty sure they're making the game the way it is because they know how much everyone likes the old ones for their difficulty and overall fun-factor, not because of console limitations.
If it were coming out for other consoles as opposed to the Wii, I'd wager a large sum of money that the only thing they would add to it, if anything, would be HD resolution.
Sheesh..

Isn't it just logical that it would be on the Wii? I mean I don't ever recall playing a Mega Man game on an 8-bit Playstation or Xbox. I don't see why people are complaining about something that just makes sense.
And unless you're a stockholder, who cares how Capcom wants to make their money? It's not your concern.
@TRT-X: Yeah, I'm sure it's inevitable.
@Archaotic: I fail to understand your logic here.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: You've got to be retarded if you think the graphics are the way they are only because the game's on WiiWare.
You do realize that you can download games from many consoles leading up to the N64 on the Virtual Console, right?
The N64.
And then take a look at Gyrostarr, another WiiWare game.
WiiWare isn't as advanced as XBLA or PSN, but please.

@Huckleberry: But by that logic, a lot of their other recent remakes should be WiiWare exclusives as well.
And in relation to budgeting or certification cost concerns, I'm positive Microsoft and Sony would work with Capcom in order to get some more quality downloadable games on their systems.
When push comes to shove, this just doesn't seem to make any sense from a business perspective, especially since there is no technological reason that this game wouldn't run on the other platforms.

@Nirolak: Sure, but in line with all the old NES games available on the Wii, it makes a predictable choice.
And while many PS3/360 owners wanted it, many of them have a Wii and if they want it badly enough will get it for that. Others never wanted it in the first place but like to complain. I would wager that the population of people who both want this game and do not have a Wii is rather small indeed.

@Huckleberry: I'm not so sure all the old school nostalgia people live on Wii. I mean, the best selling titles on XBLA have always been the remakes and arcade ports, Super Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting being the most successful of them all. It seems odd that Capcom would ditch its most successful digital distribution platform for a WiiWare exclusive, especially when it seems obvious from this comment section that many PS3 and 360 owners wanted the game.

@LionheartAce:
That's the thing though. If it were made for XBLA/PSN, would it have crap graphics? I doubt it. This is independent of gameplay mind you. I'm obviously not judging whether it's a good game or not, I'm merely pointing out that Capcom and the press are advertising MM9 as a return to the classic NES days with the original lo-fi sounds and graphics as if that didn't have anything to do with the platform it was being made for.

Again, this close to a major show I have to take things with a grain of salt. Capcom has always been one to share their games so why suddenly ditch that for the Wii exclusive? I'm guessing they have it in the works and it's a timed exclusive on the Wii for right now. Even so, the original megaman series died after 4 in my opinion so if I never get it, no big loss. The way I see it, megaman died after 4, megaman x died after x4, legends got cut down in its prime and the whole battle network died before it even started.

Makes sense to me. This is a low-budget, low-margin investment for them. I'm sure if it does really well they'll put it on other platforms. But the Wii is really where NES nostalgia and most Mega Man fans live, and it's the best-selling console, so the pieces add up.

By the way, why is everyone bitching about the graphics? Even those that want it to look like Mega 7 or 8, you guys don't play old games? Don't enjoy them?
Should it be a decision maker when it comes to a game that, most likely, will be technically sound when it comes to gameplay and will, hopefully, be incredibly fun?
I know when I play old games, like Shining Force 1, I go "Jesus, this game has horrible graphics" (especially in that game's case, it looks like an NES game on a bad day) for a couple of minutes or so, but eventually get over it, as I should, because graphics ultimately shouldn't be what one goes back to when hoping for a "retro-styled" experience. The retro style embraces what is now known as "old" or "obsolete"- that's why Mega Man 9 is 8-bit- because arguably, that's when the series has not only been its finest, but has been anything better than "good".
Who goes back to Super Mario Bros. and really, really cares that the bushes are recolored clouds?

@Huckleberry: Using NES-style programming would seem to unnecessarily raise the budget of the game though, and making the game seem like a NES game could be done without it.
Sprites I could see as an honest concern, but the issue with that is that they're not required by the other systems. XBLA and I'm sure PSN allow you to just put a box around your game window to fill up the screen, and the budget for one of those is about $20, so I can't really see that as a concern.
The only thing that seems to make sense would be Nintendo having actually paid Capcom for it, though that seems extremely unlikely for Nintendo to do.

@Nirolak: Not many other remakes are being done in a 8-bit style, in a style reminiscent of games that existed before Sony and MS ever got into the games industry.
They may not want to deal with emulation issues for the other platforms (if they are indeed using NES-style programming), or deal with making sprites for the higher resolutions on 360/PS3.
Maybe Nintendo offered some money but I seriously doubt it. I think Capcom is just analyzing the market and putting it where they think it will bring in the most sales.

I think that's much more a factor that weird exclusivity stuff. I imagine Capcom just choice the platform that they felt was most appopriate, and it was WiiWare. Kinda like you won't see Zack & Wiki on either of the other consoles (even if it had sold well. *tear*), 'cuz they don't fit in with the consoles' philosophy.
And like others have stated, games like Bionic Commando and SSFTHDR aren't coming to the Wii, essentially for the same reason. So don't be whining that Capcom isn't taking care of you.

The reason this is a wiiware exclusive is fairly obvious if you know anything about m$ and sony's policies. Both companies "encourage" (and by encourage I mean pretty much force) hi-def and/or extra special features on all of their arcade titles.
Rather than getting around the hi-def clause with a hi-res bezel, they might want to concentrate on actually making a fun game.... something they can only do on the wii.

Truth be told, I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. Personally, as a Wii fan (and 360 owner), I wouldn't care if this were multi-platform, or Wii exclusive. If I were a 360 fan, I don't think I'd feel differently, though. Classic Megaman is a mostly Nintendo thing, and I don't think that this is a terrible, crippling choice. A timed exclusive? Perhaps. A permanent exclusive? Perhaps. If you're a Classic Megaman fan, wait until it comes out, and if there's no word on it being released elsewhere, borrow a Wii, buy a Wii, or don't play it. I bought a PS2 for the simple fact that I could finally play Megaman 8 and Megaman X4. (Though the DVD player helped, of course.)
Basically, what I'm saying is, if you're the hardcore fan this was designed for, and your only choice is getting a Wii to play it, I'm sorry, but that's the way it is. For now. Maybe.
Personally, I think they should appease the true old school crowd and have a limited release of Famicom/NES carts. I honestly think people would buy them.
I am aware that the previous statement has cost me my credibility.

@Ryfael: Okay, so I was wrong on that point. That doesn't mean that there won't be a motionless control setting, though. And I never said it wasn't a WiiWare exclusive.

@Roto13: Does it matter, really? They're still going to lose a ton of money. Maybe not 500 million (I typed an extra 0, I meant 50 million :P) I don't see any real reason to keep this game exclusive to the Wii, unless Nintendo threatened them or something (which wouldn't surprise me.)

@Cyntalan:
Oh, I know. A guy can dream, though, huh?
Although, I have to wonder if they designed the game with the limitations in mind, or they just went and programmed it on a Famicom dev kit.
Then again, I only learned of the motion sensing today, so I guess that would put a damper on it.

Guys who are complaining on Wii exclusive.... remember this game is going to cost Capcom the exorbitant amount of like $1,000 dollars on salaries of the 3 programmers doing this game. Its not like they have to make this multiplat in order to "maximize profit", lol.

I've got no problems concerning the NES retro nostalgia style they are going after BUT here's hoping for them to at least make MM9 in 480p widescreen.
Now THAT would be damn funny to look at.... 1986 graphic style game filling my entire 16x9 TV screen. Hell yeah!

@Nick!: "Personally, I think they should appease the true old school crowd and have a limited release of Famicom/NES carts. I honestly think people would buy them."
That really only could happen if they developed it in the NES environment. My guess is that the art/music direction will be running in the NES "limitations", but size/speed restrictions won't even be a concern. There's a possibilty the palette limitation will be less restricted, but I don't know for sure. I really doubt they'll force a full NES environment, because, while it gives Mega Man the proper feel, I don't think they should have to sacrifice their creativity and variety for the sake of cart size limitations or processor speed limitations.
Of course, this would negate the above possibility, and while I'd love to see it (and prolly buy one if I could), I just don't see them sacrificing that many possibilities in development so they could potentially do such a thing.

@KaliKOtt: You might not be far off the mark. Capcom has always done great on Nintendo consoles. They're one of the few third parties to consistently do well on every Nintendo machine to date. Not just the Wii and Gamecube but don't forget about the GBA and DS. Honestly if I was Capcom I'd be on my knees thanking Nintendo.

Good. Sony and Microsoft do not deserve this game.
Mega Man started on a Nintendo platform, and the series first respect should be towards Nintendo.
Port this to the Sony and Micro$oft 'gamers' 2 years from now at double the price.

looks like I jumped on this post late. But I think the fact that it's Wii only has alot to do with the graphics.
PSN and Live games might have graphics "standards" that games have to live up to. I know Sony poo pooed alot of 2D games for the PS2, so I wouldn't put it past either company.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: It doesn't! Have you seen Lost Winds?! This move is more along the lines of what they did for Contra 4 and not to mention it won't cost them a crap ton of money to build (probably the bigger motivator) Nintendo does not restrict you to doing something like this and you can't definitely blame WiiWare they could've totally done 2.5D graphics for it. It's ultimately up to Capcom. Also... have you seen 8-bit graphics on an HD screen? They look f'ing magnificent.

@WordMan: Are you suggesting the graphics are poor because its on the Wii...or that it's on the Wii because its graphics are poor?
I could see Capcom going to MS and Sony (especially Sony) and getting turned away at the door for daring to suggest that a brand new game in a big name franchise come out in 2D (in retro style no less).
I think MM9 is the type of game Nintendo was hoping to see people do with WiiWare. I mean, how often do fans use flash to put together their own fan sequels...some people even hack the ROMs to build their own custom titles.
I look at MM9 as that, but being done by the original creators...thus ensuring (At least I hope ensuring) that the game stays true to the original.

@Roto13: Pardon me. Okami was a critical darling, and had a large enough support base that was calling for it on Wii. (As it "only seemed natural")
And Killer7 (if my memory is correct) was a simultaneous release. But I think it was one of the "Capcom 5" that went from being GCN exclusive to being multiplatform.

Why are they playing with people's emotions like this? Buahhh :'(
I was very happy to learn that it would come out for the PSN, and given how MM Anniversary Collection came out for the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox it would only make sense to make this game multiplatform to continue the saga that way.
I would seriously consider getting a Wii just to make sure I play this game. Is funny how a 8bit game can do what Mario Galaxy and Zelda TP did not succeed in doing (and I very much wanted to play those games). Wonder how many other PS3 or 360 would do the same.

I still think this game even existing is awesome. Honestly though, why make an 8-bit game for two companies that never had an 8-bit console? 8-bit Mega Man is synonymous with breaking plastic rectangles in half due to murder-hard timed jumps. This is like complaining that Super Mario Brothers 2 (JP version) didn't get released released on XBLA. I don't care if Capcom is a third party, or if this move isn't the most profitable one, or if they are angering fans: it is right for them to do this.
If the sales of the "Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels" is any indication, this game will sell VERY well. We might even start hoping that they release 1-7 on the VC.

There never was an official announcement that it would be released on PSN and XBLA, so you should be thankful at Capcom that they cleared this up this early. If they would have announced it like at E3 or even later you would be 10 times more dissapointed than now. And if you hate that it's coming only for wii or the fact that it's 8-bit, just realise this: it's still so much better than if it wasn't being be made at all(which people believed still like a few weeks ago).
And people, this game isn't developed by Mega Man's original creators. It's developed by Inti Creates(Ex Capcom Staff that developed Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX -games). Keiji Inafune is the only one from the Nes Mega Man staff who works on this game, and there's about 20 people developing this game. That's what Inafune said on Nintendo Power's interview.
But I still believe it's going to be at least better than 6, 7 or 8(Which on my opinion are the worse of original Mega Man games, but still really really good).

@Bluetribal (and everyone else bringing up the Capcom Five and RE4): There's a chance that I'll eat my words later, but I think you're wrong.
The main reason why Viewtiful Joe, Killer7, and RE4 became multi-console titles was due to sales - not to maximize sales, mind you, but because they didn't meet Capcom's expected sales (which I've always assumed to mean that they didn't break even). It takes a LOT of money to develop a full-on console game.
But Mega Man 9? The team's going to be much, much smaller, and it's going to cost a lot less to put it together, since the art assets and music are going to be a lot simpler. I've got a feeling Capcom's going to make a profit with the game very quickly, especially if they don't overcharge for it. Remember, the Anniversary Collection made it to the Cube's Player's Choice lineup, which is a sign that there's still love for Mega Man from Nintendo's fanbase.
