So, assuming the 200k PS3 sales boost was 100% MGS4 bundles, it sold about one million total? Hey, that's almost as much as the first Gears sold in its first three weeks! Not bad at all.

@Candlejack: In addition, here's why I don't care that FF13 went multi platform or why it wouldn't phase me if MGS4 went as well (although it won't. Content wise). So long as I know that a game has been tailored, built and intended for a single system while under development, I know that this game was meant to push it. Square Enix confirmed that. FF13 PS3 will be the same experience as it would've been if it was exclusive. I welcome this with open arms. More to enjoy for 360 users, and for PS3 users like me, again, the "pushing console limits" experience. Games in that category are far and few between and I treat them as state of the art. They deserve recognition.

But I also love a great multi platform game - Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge - you name it. I'm buying it.

@Terance : Soul Calibur :: Leigh : MGS: To have games that max out the respective console. Plain and simple. I'm a hardcore techie and I want to see "nexgen" consoles sweat and bleed. I want developers to think outside of the box. I want them to manipulate the eye. To produce games so gorgeous looking they make me want to forget real life. To capture me in the experience, in the unique experience, that was built for a platform.

PC games have been doing this day in and day out, just nobody saw it that way. I don't care what platform it is. I want the Wii to have a technical showcase. The PS3. The 360. And I buy these type of games so long as I have access to the console (which I used to). Exclusives mean jack to me in terms of sales. Sure, I love to see an exclusive to be successful, but only because it warrants pushing consoles to the limit.

Here's to developers using the excuse "it won't sell well enough" to kill exclusivity on ANY platform. You are wrong. If you make a goddamn good game, it will sell enough. Trust. And it will become an instant classic and keep selling, just like MGS4 will. Thanks for proving this, Konami/Kojima.

I know in Japan the sales velocity for MGS4 has decreased, I wonder what spot it'll take next month. That game rocks and ought to stay at number one for a long time.

As a Sony fanboy I want to defend against the "dishonor" of "exclusive" games going to xbox360, but money talks and if MGS4 goes to the xbox360 to rake in some more dough, it'll be a compelling reason to continue making such top quality games.

you know, for a niche game, NG2 didnt do too bad. Then again, i still really feel MGS has been a huge niche series, despite the mass appeal part 1 had.
I mean, this game had far too much riding on it: sony's great white hope to many, the opus of a 20 year long series (responsible for so many loose plotlines!), etc...i still feel its my GOTY that's in no way approachable to anyone who hasnt played the series before. The encyclopedia thing, the saga DVD's, even the attempts to get the digital graphic novel spread around...this game defined esoteric, and still sold the way it did.

I would have bought Battlefield Bad Company for 360 but I went out of town for 6 weeks starting the day after it released. So there is one sale they could of had if their release date was different.

AGAINST: MGS4 proves that it is not one of the elite franchises, as its sales fall far below initial sales of numerous titles released during this generation such as GTA IV, Mario Kart Wii, Halo 3, Gears of War, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Call of Duty 4. With worldwide sales likely near 2.5 million, and large drop offs in sales, it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall of Konami and find out if these sales are impressive, neutral or disappointing. As a title that is very important for Konami's financials, it'll be interesting to see how things play out.

Why is that considered a lot? Even if you counted every PS3 system sale for the month, MGS4 barely broke 1 million sales. Didn't reports say it need to sell 2 million just to break even?

Maybe I'm jaded in thinking a game with a several 100 million dollar budget that was hyped to the heavens didn't even break a million sold even when counting bundled sales.

I'm really impressed with Guitar Hero: On Tour's sales. Even though the DS has a massive install base, it's rare to see third-party games come out near the top.

1. This is only for the US.

2. It most likely broke a million, as NPD doesn't account for every store.

Isn't obvious to any of you yet why XBL will now have this feature to dump games on the HDD. That's right, MGS4 for the 360 comes on two disc! You load the second disc on to the HDD and keep the first disc in the trey. So you can play the game without swapping disc. This solves the storage problem for developers and eliminates the need for blu ray on 360. Uncharted, Drake's Fortune could also soon find it's way on 360. Oh Yes, MS are clever. Oh yes indeed!

Metal Gear RAIDEN!!!!! What an experience MGS4, especially for the fans. This is what I want from the franchise I love, show some love to us and we'll support buying it. Too bad, nowadays, casual games has taken more of focus, which is good more gamers = GOOD...but I love Metal Gear..and want another Metal Gear....Forever!!

I am writting this on behalf of thousands of angry South Africans.This is complaint that we cannot purchase extra characters slot & stuff from MGO shop....now with the up coming expansion pack "How are we going to get that?"

We all going to return our MGS4 copy for full refund if this problem is not sorted.Not trying to funny but its frustrating if it says:error..if your country is listed below"You won't be able purchase goods.

Although I hadn't played any of the other MGS games before, I took a chance and bought MGS4 and man, did it rock. Now I'm playing the other games in the series to find out more about the story. I'm on my way to becoming a hardcore MGS fan.

@luxusa: Actually the sales numbers don't really prove that case. Look at Lego Indiana Jones in the same chart. TT released it on multiple platforms, and it sold almost a million copies. Which do you think cost more to make? If MGS4 was available on the 360, it would most likely have had double the sales it received.

Maybe he (?) should be picking games which are sub-par on all platforms and worse on Wii? Because sometimes the Wii version of those games has sold badly. SHOCK. Or perhaps games that are Wii exclusive and shit. Because sometimes those games have also sold badly. OH NOES.

I'm not saying that the latest kill'em'all violencefest will necessarily do great on Wii compared to other platforms (although No More Heroes apparently did okay outside Japan, and I presume the Mad World developers are hoping for a similar, niche but moderate success). But the claim that, in general, third-party games don't sell on Wii has always been bullshit.

(The claim that relatively few high-quality third party games are actually released on Wii, on the other hand? Mostly true.)
