Metal Gear Solid: Cold Blooded
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:30 AM on July 8, 2008
Graham Cornell, Creative Director over at multimedia studio TheDuoGroup, directed us to this amazing animated Metal Gear Solid short his company created. Did you ever stop to think about how the enemies that Big Boss and Solid Snake see their nemesis? Cold Blooded explores this in the form of a brief encounter in 1972 that Captain Mikhail Tarasov calls "The Margov Incident". The short is just so beautifully done, and at the end I felt an odd sort of pride at being briefly in control of such an absolute bad-arse. Very, very nice work Graham.

@spite_nihilo:
Alright.
I'll admit, I've never made a movie as like that one, but I've made this [benspants.com] and this [benspants.com] using After Effects (and another particle generator called Particle Illusion). I didn't write music or a script, but I'm also not trying to dump on this movie - it's pretty cool. The MGS music at the end and the shot of him in front of the moon gave me shivers like everyone else. I'm just saying that, from a visual/animation perspective, it's not terribly impressive.

@Phoenicks: Are you being...sarcastic? If anything Dead Fantasy is the epitome of "nothing happening" and storylines thrown into whack for the sake of fan-service crossovers. Sure, the cinematography and choreography are top-notch (especially for the work of one person), but story telling is definitely not one of the series' strong suits.

It's possible to take out a tank even with grenades. Tank isn't that agile like in MGS! :D
You can destroy the track and wheels and then you can throw the grenade inside the tank. Then you have basically "destroyed" it.
I think that it's possible to destroy the engine too. It's not that well protected.

Eh, you're not alone. The effort and work is definitely there, but I'm not so sure what they were trying to accomplish. The out-of-canon stuff doesn't bother me so much (I was much more restless about the super-Snake moments of Twin Snakes) but in general, I think it just needed a better writer. Even the comic by Ashley Wood wasn't so great, but the art was fantastic.

That was very well done, very metal gear like. Better than metalgear digital comics. Infact, better than most digital comics I've seen. This really reminds me that snake eater has the best soundtrack of all metal gear. I didn't think the music is that great in mgs4. Of course I never turn on the ingame ipod either.

Does it bother any one else that all these places are using the MGS4 logo photoshopped into their own "projects" (game trailers did this for their MG retrospective as well).
The Ls in the logo are clearly 4s, it just seems silly to be using it everywhere and anywhere when it was so specifically designed.
Maybe I'm just nitpicky about typography.

@Hauler: I'll bet you dollars to donuts that snow was done using a simple particle emitter (or several) in Adobe After Effects or a similar program. In fact, the whole short could easily have been made in After Effects or pretty much any other motion graphics program, and I imagine it was. With a little research and a copy of After Effects you could probably do the same thing they've done here. All you need to know is how to set keyframes.

A++ for effort. But for such a large project, some research is in order; the helicopters shown in the middle are clearly Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks, which entered US service in 1979.

This kind of crap was cool when i was 8 years old and still played with G.I. Joes. All I can say is that the whole MGS series is very cheezy. It is kind of embarrassing to see grown men getting all crazy about the "story line" in MGS. B-Movie stuff if you ask me, Just a notch above Uwe Boll.

Let me get this straight: in a game that features SUCCESSFUL HUMAN CLONING in the 1970s and GIANT WALKING ROBOT NUCLEAR LAUNCH PLATFORMS, we're arguing that they couldn't possibly have guns or helicopter designs (looks like a Soviet MI-8, to me) a few years earlier than they were rolled into service?
That seems a little odd, to me.

@WizarDru: You can, but it requires a 90 minute codec scene explaining the development of the weapons and how the Patriots/Syndicate forced Fox Hound Mulder to look for the Colonists in Soviet Russia, who were developing a hybrid alien vaccine which would eventually lead to the creation of Black Oil and FoxDie. The UH-60 was developed from secret alien technology that was found in UFO crashes which is why UH-60 kind of looks like UFO. The FAMAS was actually a secret research project of DARPA until Charles DeGaulle (The Boss's Boss) infiltrated the Pentagon with a magnetic tape containing an alien transmission containing the plans for the FAMAS assault rifle. Due to the inadequacies of French computer analysis, they sent it to the Soviets who decoded the message and then began using the prototypes in cold weather units.

I didn't say it wasn't cinematic. I am implying that the story is completely ridiculous. If someone is going to spend that much time creating a cinematic gaming experience, then maybe they should have a script that isn't written by a 12 year old. The nemesis is called "Big Boss" the main character is called Snake. Pa-lease! The extremely long cut scenes are painful to sit through. If my girlfriend walked in on me while I was playing it, I would feel very embarrassed.
I usually give a lot of slack to goofy story lines in games but I am tired of sony fan boys posting about how epic this is. I am not very far into the game but from what I've seen so far and heard of what is to come, I cringe.
