Microsoft Keen On 3D Gaming, Have Performed Experiments
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:30 AM on July 4, 2008
If you care to remember, Jim Cameron has said that the game adaptation of his upcoming sci-fi flick - Avatar - is already running in 3D, and running in 3D on a 360. Ubisoft are the guys behind that game, but they're not the only ones looking at the tech. XNA boss Chris Satchell has said Microsoft have also been "experimenting" with stereoscopic gaming, although he's quick to stress that, as it stands, the requirement that gamers wear glasses makes the technology's widespread acceptance a thing of the future, not the present.
Microsoft has experimented with 3D games, reveals Satchell [GI.biz]

One sony developer did the johnny lee thing with the ps eye and then i remember like a month later sony showed off the head tracking with just the sony eye with no need for the goggles. It was pretty awesome, i hope sony comes up with something.

I can see it now: Microsoft X-pad. Positioned to rival the DS2 in 2010 with full stereoscopic support. Comes with free 3-pack of tinted glasses.

It would be nice to have as an option first, something you could turn off in case of headaches or motion sickness.

I'd say every games company is looking into this idea it will only take one of them to make a game and for it to take off.
@Rockzilla: I've seen another demo he did in front of an audience, still to this day I don't know why he didn't run straight down to the patent office with that.

3D is interesting, but will it be fun or free from headaches?
If so, Microsoft will put Mr. Wizard to shame.
@gamadaya: Seriously, not since songs of shaving cream have I heard it.
@Raziel Dune: Oh lord, will it require the SNES power supply too?

My migraines make the level of acceptance that much lower.

Did Microsoft just watch Minority report lately or something? It seems like their watching it and taking notes of things they can do. Just wait for the pre-cog peripheral that will determine what games you buy (and what crimes you may commit!).

I would happily wear something that made me look stupid, this tech is amazing! although I am fairly convinced they could do it based on the whites of your eyes.

And now, class, an example of how not to expand the audience for your device. Jim, come put this helmet on so everyone can see how comfortable it is.

More importantly, that's pretty keen that Kotaku used a shot of John Carradine from INVISIBLE INVADERS (1959) there! Nice work (coming from probably one of the few people here who actually noticed and appreciated it).

@Rockzilla: That video is pretty dang cool.
I'm excited to see if they can do this and make games more 3d and more immersive.

This has been the greatest development in technology since the recreation of Hal Emmerich's (Otacon) Stealth Camouflage. I'll post a link to the vid the minute I find it.

If it's stereoscopic 3d, I don't really care how they do it I just want it. I've been playing with LCD glasses on pc for years now and it's great.
If it's @Rockzilla:, that'd be cool too. That could work extremely well for dodging and popping out of cover besides it looks damn cool.

@Rockzilla: Just wanted to say thanks for sharing that video. That was really awesome! I look forward to this technology becoming more mature. I hope by the time I am 50, they have virtual reality down pat.

This isn't going to be much fun when your 360 gets a RRoD.
