Midway Delaying Wheelman to Q1 2009
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 PM on July 25, 2008
When we played the Vin Diesel vehicle Wheelman at E3 last week, we were mostly surprised to learn that the game was coming out in the Fall. "What, this game?" we thought. While enjoyable junk food and technically impressive in parts, Wheelman felt like a game that was six months out, in need of a bit of polish before it went public.
Fortunately, that's what it sounds like Midway is planning to do, as reps told us at Comic-Con tonight that the title, originally scheduled for a release this year will get more time in the development incubator. Now planned for a Q1 '09 release, Wheelman will still beat the movie of the same name to the theatres, it will arrive just a bit later and hopefully be the better for it.
We also hope they'll rewrite that pedestrian car dodging logic. Far too many suicidal Barcelonans in this game...

Hey! That car in the background is a G8! What a sick car.

Par for the course for them.

This one can stay in the incubator permanently as far as I'm concerned. From the gameplay I've seen, there's nothing there worth my $60.

Wait there's a Wheelman movie? I assume Vin Diesel is the protagonist. I though this was a games only thing from his videogame company.
At least they see the need for more work for the game. I've seen the gameplay clip. While some parts of it don't look that surprising, its game mechanics seem like they can be good enough to knock the Driver,Getaway clones out there (irony huh?).

Good, I don't want them to release a fucked-up game just so it can be released next to the movie.
Tigon did a great job with Riddick, hopefully they'll make this game great as well.

I got a soft spot for this game when I saw them playing it on 1UP Yours, spinning the car 180, activating bullet time, and shooting tires out on motorbikes before spinning back and driving away. That's insanity!
But I have no tolerance for buggy games since I find every bug in them the moment I start them up... fingers crossed for a working, polished product.

I'm glad to hear this. Do you guys remember last year when Midway shipped stranglehold 2-3 weeks before Halo 3? They pretty much doomed that game to poor sales. Midway just earned some points with me for not rushing this game.

Tigon are not making this game - Its Midway Newcastle, same team that made LA Rush which was at best, turd.

This move can only be good for the project. I got to play it at E3 and it's pretty good fun (albeit you could tell it needed a few more months in the cooker). This is one of those games that needs to be played to appreciate it fully. The trailers don't really do the experience of playing it any favours.
