Midway Moves TNA Impact Team To San Diego
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 7:00 AM on July 24, 2008
Midway recently combined its Midway Los Angeles studio with its San Diego one, a move the publisher says will help the TNA Impact! team work better with its other studios in Chicago, Austin, Seattle and Newcastle, UK. Midway looks ready to increase the focus on that studio, hiring more staff there as well.
Midway's third-party production, licensing and quality assurance groups are also in San Diego, so it makes sense they'd want the development team to be nearby them... wait, all this time Midway's quality assurance has been in a different city than its wrestling franchise development team?
...Hmm! Full announcement after the jump.
Midway to Combine Southern California Development Studios
Combination of Los Angeles and San Diego Studios Will Allow Greater Synergies and Coordination in Support of TNA Wrestling Franchise and Other ProjectsCHICAGO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Midway Games Inc. (NYSE:MWY), a leading interactive entertainment publisher and developer, today announced it will be combining the operations of Midway Studios - Los Angeles, located in Moorpark, CA, with Midway Home Entertainment, located in San Diego, CA. The newly combined operations will be located at Midway Home Entertainment's current San Diego facility. The majority of Moorpark employees, including the entire development team for Midway's TNA iMPACT!™ franchise, are being offered the opportunity to transfer to the San Diego facility. Midway expects to complete the transition out of the Moorpark facility by September 30, 2008.
Combining the locations will allow the TNA iMPACT! development team to further leverage synergies with Midway's other development studios in Chicago, Austin, Seattle, and Newcastle, UK, and work in close conjunction with the third-party production, licensing, and quality assurance groups that are currently in San Diego. In addition, the San Diego area has a strong interactive entertainment talent base that will greatly help fuel Midway's future growth.
As part of this move, Midway expects in the near future to look for new talent in its San Diego studio. For a list of available positions please visit www.midway.com.

Midway? Make a good game? HAW!
Seriously though, the last time I heard about it was reading Gershon Levy (I think, so don't quote me on that)'s feature on it on thewrestlingfan.com, when they held that press event or things of that nature.
Let's just say I'm not impressed, but it's probably miles ahead than what I was expecting from Midway.

All I hope is that this fills the void left where THQ stopped doing their GCN WWE games. Excellent gameplay that still was close to the WCW/NWO Revenge & WWF No Mercy glory days combined with an fantastic paint tool to make your own characters. Then they go and just concentrate on those abysmal Smackdown games.
Oh well, if Impact is poop I can still pop in Fire Pro.

Is this a pro wrestling game, or just regular wrestling?

@Cloral: Yeah but you can't yell at the developer for not fixing them either.

Having the QA team in a different city than the development team is more common than you might think. I've done several projects under that sort of arrangement. That said, it isn't the greatest arrangement, as you can't go punch the QA who writes stupid bugs.

QA and 3rd party Midway have always been in SD, and they used to have development teams down there too if anyone remembers. There used to be 4-5 teams in SD until Midway's great management ran em out of town. (Midway SD created Hydro Thunder, both Ready 2 Rumbles to name a few.) Then they ressurected Midway SD in 2004 and closed it again in 2005. Now they're gonna rez it again in 2008 and probably close it again the first chance the stockholders get nervous. They must get some sick pleasure in closing the SD office. lol.
