Mirror's Edge E3 Demonstration
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on July 15, 2008
It's taken from a demonstration, so excuse the slightly grainy quality, but its a credit to the game's artists that its blue skies shine brightly regardless. This player demo of Mirror's Edge may seem familiar at first, but later gets into all-new territory, including combat and the disarming of opponents, a tactic so ingrained within the game that it's possible to complete the game without "having fired a single shot". Exciting stuff.

And on the camera, if they chicken out and make it 3rd person I'm not interested anymore. That feels so disconnected and boring in comparison to what we see here, I think.

I still wish the game was in third person. You get the feeling they can flub a alot of the collision detection because of the first person perspective. It seems like simply getting close to right is all thats needed, and in third person, you would see how they are sort of snapping you to objects when you get close enough.

The game looks good and I like the approach of FPnonS. I didn't like the character was apparently taking damage from a lot of the jumps and falls. Sure it's probably somewhat more realistic, but seems kind of cheap to have mandatory wounds to get through the level. Then again, if you're going for realism she'd sprain her ankle and not be able to walk on it and those security guys wouldn't miss from three inches away.
A couple things that concern me with this game are how they're going to make it clear where you're supposed to go, will the red things always take you in the right direction? Another is whether they'll be able to keep up the fluidity and momentum for the player. The first demo was probably a bot run, the guy doing this second one showed some hesitation, but overall kept it moving, but obviously he knew where he was going. Will it end up being a lot of trial and error for players?
Also, seemed like there were some repetitive elements even in this short section, could be a bad sign.

Yet another E3 announcment I'm pumped about. This game looks quite awesome. I love the subtle video cues (the red coloring). I do hope there are more moves than what we've seen, or even a progression system so that your runner runs faster, jumps higher, can do backflips, whatever.
Also:
1 - A replay mode that lets you watch the awesome way you escaped.
2 - Multiplayer running with a ball and goal, like Les Fils du Vent.
3 - A crowd. Yes I know that you're on the roofs, and people don't exactly hang out on roofs, but the game still seems kinda sterile thusfar.

It's an interesting take on the generic FPS; I like how they're going about with the pacifist or at least "I'm not shooting anything moving" angle. I think the key will be having nice and open levels that offer multiple paths to the player, subtly with those colored sections hinting where to go. I'd imagine the player would be frustrated at getting stuck because he's expected to follow one linear path but the rooftop looks wide open.
I'd also like to see more done w/ the dynamic camera, now that they're committed to have it "running cameraman shake" style. Some of the animations and camera movements seem a bit stiff; the movements don't have that "natural lag" that people have in real life that makes some of the camera work in, say, Gears of War so organic and polished.

Wow. That looks so bright, crisp, clean, and yet so lonely. I cannot wait to get my hands on this. Compared to the trailer, it doesn't disappoint. I'm hoping they get some variation in the sliding animations (such as down that escalator in the trailer) because it looks goofy when the exact thing is seen over and over in different situations. But then again, that might be a personal preference because I'm sure if you're trained one way, you're more likely to repeat it the same way.

IT felt a bit scripted, but I am really interested in seeing where they take this game. I have medium to high hopes, the use of FP and no HUD gives it a free feel, like the free roaming environment the chachter is placed in. I say this is good for EA to get a new IP and be risky by sticking to unique gameplay.

I like that the game can be completely done without ever firing the gun but at the same time you have the option.
I've always wanted to try free running but i have messed up leg muscles (not to the point where it hinders me too badly just makes things that involve running harder for me to do, or long walks harder, theoretically though if do enough stretching exercises on the muscles i could fix it though...or i could get surgery! It looks really gorgeous, but something tells me the parkour elements will merely be scripted animations done by titlting analog sticks in the direction you're running/jumping. I hope that the control scheme has a little bit of a 'timing' element to it, rather than just free running a la Assassins Creed.

At one point late into the demo, the player runs near a wall and it automatically does a little wall-run. It seems unintentional, and all but confirms that it will be "Hold down a button and direction to do parkour" control scheme, a la Assassin's Creed. The game looks like it might be a fun rental, but... Eh.
I don't know, it had me kind of excited with the level of immersion. The way the camera works, going for a true first-person perspective, and such. The helicopter grab at the end was wonderful, for how cinematic and intuitive it was. Given the command, "I don't care how, just get off that building," and knowing that you had to do a stylish helicopter-grab was pretty awesome.
But making the first-person perspective realistic, then giving absurd enemies (the cop that fires directly at her, while she charges in to disarm him, without hitting her once) kind of killed it for me. I hate it when they go for "realism, but you're the hero in a video game, so they're not ever going to kill you very easily."

2 things: 1. Gameplay looks extremely scripted; 2. It seems like there will be a lot of hand-holding in regards to following one specific path to your objectives.
Hopefully, these two things are only blatantly obvious because this is something of a tutorial level. But my main knock (well, only knock, really) against Uncharted was the linearity in the platforming segments. The freedom afforded the player in Assassin's Creed just blew me away, and I played that before Uncharted, so I think I was spoiled in that aspect. Like it or not, AC raised the bar for realistic platforming and animation in video games. I am still holding out hope that we'll see some of that in Mirror's Edge.

A. If you've seen game demos before you know that they pretty much enable God mode so that it doesn't stop the presentation.
B. You can turn off the hints, which is what I will do.
C. I think it's a game much more focused on the narrative, a lot like Dreamfall: TLJ.
It will probably be one of those games that you won't like if you don't get into the story. I like the premise, it reminds me of Snow Crash except the couriers had sweet-ass skateboards.
A game can never reproduce the actual experience of someone's eyes because a monitor isn't peripheral and we make our eyes focus on what we want to see, plus it's very hard, I think, to copy what you think you see into a game engine. I think they did a great job and it will be fun to play on a big screen.
I will probably rent it as well.
Also, if any of you have seen videos of David Belle, you know that jumps like those in the game are actually possible in real-life. David was the inventor of Parkour and also starred in Borough 13 which is an awesome French action movie.
I thought the paths were really apparent, it didn't seem confusing to me... so that's why I'm going to disable the hints, hehe. Plus the presenter said this was early on in the game... which is why it was easy.

Since the game is being played with "up" "down" and "aggression" buttons, I'm worried it'll get stale in a hurry. The trailers have both looked nice, though.
@wanion: There aren't mandatory rules; the guy playing doesn't know you can roll to negate fall damage.
@Cheroro: It's optional. I think you have to press a button or stand still. You can even disable it entirely.
Oh, and when you pick up guns, you lose mobility. They are deliberately trying not to make a standard FPS.
