More On That Master Chief-Free Halo Game
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on July 14, 2008
Earlier this month, we heard a rumour that Microsoft were going to be unveiling a new Halo game at E3. A new Halo game with a twist: there'd be no Master Chief. That rumour's just picked up a little more steam, with GameSpot reporting that - according to "a source with knowledge of the studio's development slate" - Bungie will be announcing a new Halo game "sometime this year" (so not necessarily at E3). This game will be a "darker, grittier" Halo game, featuring a squad of human soldiers and gameplay that's "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War". If Bungie are developing, that's exciting! But we'll wait for confirmation before popping the champagne corks, thanks.
Next Halo squad-based, Master Chief-free? [GameSpot]

@Coquiton:
That is what the developers should be thinking. As far as being creative the majority of developers suck major ass.
Any moron could think of a new HALO game, be it squad based, RTS, etc. HALO is not exactly the smartest gaming cookie on the block you know..

lol we should have more squad games set in downtown metropolitan areas. Spread out squad we have to cover 3 square miles within the next 2 hours......

Oh joy. Another squad based shooter.
What will they call this one?
Ghost's of Halo?
Halo Six: Earth Squad?
Halo Recon: Call of Duty?
Duty Calls: Halo Force?
Peter Jackson Presents: Halo Squad Six, featuring Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon?
Halo S.Q.U.A.D. : Cortana's Strike Force Bravo?
H.A.L.O. "High Allegations, Low Operations"?
Or how about the grand daddy of them all..
Rainbow above a HALO six: Destiny Calls/Ghost Squad Operation: HALO D.E.S.T.I.N.Y.
I just hope they set this game on a HALO that features World War 1, World War 2, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Operation whatever the fuck we are doing right now in Iraq.
Imagine the last stage of the game - each section of the HALO invades the other - with your squad caught in the middle! Watch in awe as NVA fight Japanese soldiers from WW2. Or as Desert Storm troops fight the French in the trenches in WW1!
OMFG.
This has been brought to you by Vanguarde, who is really sick of squad based games set in wars.

If this is the direction they are taking, they need to take it easy on the bright neon colors and cheesy voice acting, from everyone. Also, they need to get better writers for both the story and dialogue, and then maybe we will have ourselves a decent game.

@Lord Thayer: That's an interesting take, and obviously the rumor's not fleshed out enough to read into it, and well, it's a rumor... but Luke wrote there'd be no Master Chief. So while we might see the conflict through the eyes of regular soldiers-- and that could be compelling-- if the rumor's right it doesn't sound like we'll be getting a new take on Master Chief, from a first-person, or any other, perspective.
Personally I'd like Bungie to just let go of the Halo universe. They've done an excellent job with it, but I'm just not interested anymore. I'd prefer to see them do a new IP.

I just hope that by "darker, grittier" they don't mean "browner, grayer". I loved Halo 3's graphics in the sense that everything was vibrant. I would hate to see another GoW or Killzone pallette.
They don't have to keep the same bright pallette, but I just don't want the game to look like GTA4 just for the sake of "realism".

I'd love to see it be some sort of uber-revolutionary tactical fps; I like the concept behind the genre, but never have I played a tactical fps where the tactical portion of it was used in a way I enjoyed. I dunno how many other people feel the same way, maybe none. But, basically, if they could nail a tactical system that I liked and basically kept the same core level design, I'd thoroughly enjoy it; It's one thing to have a set of MJOLNIR armor soaking up damage while you run in for a neck-snapping melee attack, but quite another when the opponent is much larger and stronger than you, and you have to really play your cards right. Something like that could really take the vulnerability that I really enjoyed about playing the Halo's on Legendary (and with various skulls in the 3rd installment)and put them even in a Normal difficulty. I'm just saying, there is SOMETHING there, though what is a bit of an enigma.

I hope the game ends up good since the third and second halo kind of failed to make the plot and levels as endearing as the first one. I don't think we need a new dark and gritty killzone copy though since it's just more shades of grey with the odd bit of lighting. That doesn't always bother me but I would like to see them move away from it in some games. Halo had a sci-fi and colourful style so unless this one brings it's own style then it'll most likely just get washed out.

I hope this is true. The fictional universe that Halo is set in... one in which humanity fights a losing battle against an enemy that has them beat on numbers, technology, and resources, is very compelling. But throughout the Halo series, it never got a very good treatment. Even the 'core' story, that of Master Chief's saga was a bit hard to comprehend... not because it was overly complicated, but because things were NOT EXPLAINED TO THE PLAYER.
A little more down and dirty, WWII style sci-fi shooter sounds right up my alley. (Republic Commando, anyone? It was Star Wars + Normandy.)
Playing as a new hero, with a new, sympathetic cast of characters who actually do more than provide the occasional plot device and then DIE sounds like a good deal to me.

Halo is a big deal to a lot of people, Microsoft included. Perhaps that it's a relativly young franchise it's suseptable to becoming a easily tainted franchise in the minds of gamers. That said Microsoft better be damn sure, that whatever Halo game comes out, it is "mostly" universally acclaimed or it could very well be the end of the Halo money machine for MS.
Now I can understand the need for MS to release another shooter with the Halo name on it, as MS tends to struggle with creating a good first party library and having released most of those franchised games MS really needs this game at this point in the canosle race.
Are they milking it? Maybe.

@NeoAkira: Spartans are the results of a very extensive super soldier program. There's only about 7 active spartans (6 now that Chief is gone), each of which is essentially an army in and of themself.
The majority of the UNSC is made up of regular soldiers, Spartans are very rare and few and far between.
A game without the player in direct contact with a Spartan would be pretty interesting as the perspective of Halo is very skewed as you're viewing it as an incredibly strong, very large Spartan so the average enemy is not as much of a threat or deterrant as they would be to, say, a 5ft, 6in soldier.

Without being Master Chief, you lose that "one man army" style of approaching a situation, which I hope brings some freshness to a series that, sorry to say, got repetitive by the time Halo 3 rolled around. I've loved the series from the day I picked up my launch original fat-box, and I love it enough to actually be interested in other perspectives.
The Halo series has always had a good feel to the control scheme and the overall combat, but I would absolutely love a FPS with that same Halo feel, but as a UNSC Marine controlling a squad with Full Spectrum Warrior type squad controls. Telling your guys where to stack, what to fire at, etc.

I've thoroughly enjoyed all 3 Halo games. This, though, doesn't interest me. Its just not DIFFERENT enough from this description.
I'll wait for a confirmation and more info first, but I'm pretty much "meh" for now.

I think they should let the series die. They had a fantastic run at it and there is nothing worse than a series that feels forced. However, what if they remade Halo 1 in all its original glory, yes with health and fall damage, but with shiny new graphics? Interesting...

so....a halo game without master chief? is that even a halo game at all? they would just use the name to get people to buy it. My problem is now instead of cashing in on the Halo name they are cashing in on the Halo name AND the success of gears of war style gameplay. The word that comes to me is sellout...its time to move on

If you remember it was announced almost a year ago that Christian Allen, the senior designer and creative director of the Ghost Recon series left Ubisoft and joined Bungie. Also, there is a new Halo novel coming out this Fall called Halo: The Cole Protocol, which is about a squad of SPARTAN-IIs who were on an isolated mission during the events of the Halo video-games.
They are definitely priming this game.

I read that as "Master Chief" ... "Free Halo Game"...
It must be late but if it was free that would be awesome!

It'll be nice to have something new. GTA 4 was uneventful and an easy beat, CoD4 multiplayer is getting a little boring, and SSBB, well, it's only fun now with 4 people that are as good as you. Rock Band is still going good though, besides of the broken drum set that I don't want to replace until Rock Band 2. Not a Gears fan tho, really really short story line, and you can't jump...So let's just hope this will pull me out from under water that is filled with games that have gotten really boring.

A thought that I had: Could it be a rescue mission, specifically the rescue of a certain green-armored cyborg and his blue hologram girlfriend? There WAS that whole ending with the rear half of the Forward Unto Dawn drifting toward some planet that had obviously been colonized.
