Mortal Kombat Team Didn't Think Reaction To DC Crossover Would Be *That* Bad
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on July 29, 2008
Sitting down with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon at Comic-Con last week, we chatted about the developer's latest creation Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. This was after some extended play time with newly released characters Shang Tsung and Catwoman, both gobs of fun to play.
Having already discussed the previous take on Mortal Kombat 8 at length — with Boon telling me that it had been scrapped in favour of MK vs. DCU and that the ninth proper entry in the series may take it back to its ultra-violent roots — I wondered how much sleep Boon and crew had lost over the decision to junk that, instead adding a bunch of out of place superheroes.
Given that MK vs. DCU has no plans to introduce any new Mortal Kombat characters to the mythos — Boon called the MK side a "greatest hits" line up — how did the team feel fans would react to the inclusion of DC's finest? (The other "Vs". option Boon told us about chilled us to the bone, by the way.)
"If you're asking me to put a number on it, from one to ten, I'd have thought [the reaction to MK vs. DCU's announcement] would have been a four", Boon said at Midway's reception last week. "Turns out it was more like a nine".
Even if you're still turned off by the notion of superheroes and supervillians crashing the Mortal Kombat party, take comfort in this. Some unnamed Midway employees had actually suggested Mortal Kombat vs. Blitz as a viable option for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 entry. Boon said this with a straight face, after I asked him about the possibility of another High Impact Football game in his future, so be thankful you're getting what you're getting.
Boon didn't have to do much convincing to spark our interest in the game. We'd already been enjoying our hands on time with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe for the better part of an hour when he sat down.
Updated impressions? Catwoman's got a fantastic arse.

I can't help but feel that Mortal Kombat never evolved beyond it's gore-gimmick to become a balanced and deep fighter. Instead, it just keeps adding more gimmicks. The D.C. gimmick won't buy me off anymore than the gore one did 10 years ago.
Gives me a hankering or a MArvel v. Capcom game again. Or maybe Marvel v. DC v. Capcom. Ahhh....

Wow, people LOVE to bitch, huh?
It seems that everyone nowadays rather just bitch and complain about a game that hasn't even been released than wait until it comes out and try it out yourself. This is for anyone who has said "OMG THIS GAME SUX LOL". What happened to the days that people could just buy a game, play it, and then say, "Well, that was actually pretty kickass." or "It wasn't that great."? Cause I sure as hell don't judge a book by its fucking cover (cause I did that with BioShock and that game was great).
While the game looks decent at the moment, I still can't help wanting to play it. Hell, 90% of Kotakus commenting saying that it's gonna suck are STILL going to play it just 'to play it'. So, why bitch? Cause your bored?
MKvDC is something different and I welcome it regardless of whether it sucks or not. As for the MvC fanboys(and girls), I don't wanna pick a fight, but please, SHUT THE FUCK UP. This is about MKvDC. Keep your bullshit to yourself; besides, I'll take the original MK or SF over MvC anyday.

Perhaps that's because they didn't alter the core of the game to add the Capcom cast. What made street fighter was the crazy animations mixed with frenetic controls and a dash of OCD.
What makes Mortal Kombat? Ask anyone.
Fatalities. Now I'm no fan of MK anymore, but even I can see where this diagnosis gets more than a few people sick to their stomachs. Not to mention the fact that anyone can tell you that DC has as much character development as Duke Nukem.
Now if people can pass the fact that Mortal Kombat might have grown up and lost fatalities (irony anyone?) and that MK shares the same amazing character growth as DC and make the gameplay worth while then maybe there's something to this game.
But to compare it to MVsCapcom? Really? That game was awesome BECAUSE it didn't alter the recipe.

MK just needs to be put to rest. Seriously. It was a fighter based on gimmicks and that just doesn't cut it in this day and age with the modern competition it now faces. Boon and the crew just can't seem to step it up - they've had countless chances now.
Both the animation and the fighting system still look stiff and ancient and the artwork still looks like a trainwreck from the mid 90s.
Gimmicks alone get old... fast. I liked MKII, or so I thought. Loaded it up in FBA the other day for shits and giggles and boy did it disappoint. I can't begin to remember what I actually liked about it. That's gotta be a sign, when even nostalgia fails to sugarcoat a turd.

I LOVED the series' initial concept (a rip-off of Bruce Lee's 1997 masterpiece: Enter the Dragon). Ancient Kung-Fu masters and ninja was an amazing backdrop for the ultra-violence. When the ninja started looking like motocross riders and all sorts of otherworldly magic crap started appearing, I started losing interest. When robots and sci-fi entered the picture, I became disgusted.
If they would have stuck to their initial plan, I would have continued to support this series. Now, it's like an elderly pet we all know needs to be put down but no one wants to admit it.

You've Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Tekken and many more for a 'serious' fighting game.

@exkon: No one batted an eye because Capcom made awesome Marvel games, and Street Fighter was the best fighter out there. Marvel Super Heroes was great with its sprites and gameplay. Throw in the equally outrageous SF/Capcom world and it didn't disappoint. Mortal Kombat has generally disappointed with each new release, so it's natural some would see their treatment of the DC franchise a poison.
We've seen the screenshots, we've seen the videos. The animations look just as bad as every 3D MK since Deadly Alliance. They need some artistic and motion direction on that game badly. Why do Superman and Batman have stances like they want to take a shit? Why do they flail instead of punch? The characters may come from a comic, but why do their animations look comical, laughable? We're not knocking it because we don't know, but because we do.

I have a few fighters (SF II SNES, Soul Calibur 1 & 2, MK 2 & 3) but I have absolutely no interest in having a balanced, perfected fight system.
I get some friends around and play Soul Calibur and laugh our arses off as Voldo weaves around Astaroth's legs. We spend about half an hour trying to work out how the hell one of us managed to get Scorpion to impale the other guy with a huge chain thing.
That's after upside down Mario Kart, or drunken WarioWare games.
We do it because it's fun as hell. I'm perfectly happy with MK sticking in some super-heroes, and losing a bit of gore for that cause. We'll always have the next one after all.
All I'm saying is that for me, MK 8 looks more fun than SC IV, or Virtua Fighter 5. The only other fighter I'll be getting for a long while will be Street Fighter. Because it looks amazing, too.

On one hand, I guess it's admirable of them to try to emulate the Marvel vs. Capcom concept.
On the other hand, MvC was built on top of a very solid X-Men/Marvel Super Heroes engine, and they balanced the two sides by upping the Capcom heroes' moves instead of dumbing down Marvels'. Plus, the two sides already existed as fighting games.
And on a tangent, is it just me, or are the "fight while falling" and "zoom into close combat" features just gimmicky and removes some of the skill? Then again, it's not like people have Mortal Kombat tourneys...

Then, when the rumors came out that DC was putting a strangelhold on the game (IE: No fatalities to protect their hero's image), and I thought "Well, considering Mortal Kombat essentially has the worst fighting system ever, and relies entirely on its Fatalities for me to enjoy them, this is going to be a big steaming pile of crap."

Why do any of you actually take the mortal kombat series as a serious technical fighter. It NEVER was. I've loved the series from the start, with every campy, gimmicky 'improvement' (sic) they've made over the years. They looked at the success of Marvel/Cap (another one of my fav's), and said, "why not?". Exactly, Why not? They aren't trying to reinvent the fighting game, or blow everyones mind with a completely different experience. They are just trying to have some fun with the people who will enjoy it. It's nice to know that all of the commenters here all make games for a living and can provide some technical criticism based on a 'choppy' demo vid. If you don't like the idea, don't play, don't buy, don't bitch. I like Cap/SNK, Guilty Gear, MK, KI, Marvel, Powerstone, hell, any fighter, they all have good points. Relax, it's just a game.

As it's been said, MK was seen as more gimmicky and degraded with each installment. This game seems more like desperation than a good idea.
@HeartlessOmega: Yeah, it does seem like an awful lot of bitching. I feel like our collective disapproval of the same issues (animation in particular) is our voice to tell them "Hey fix that shit!". It (maybe) worked with hot dog arms, why not stiff punching arms?

They already had the stuff up and running, they simply just said, "Hey, let's pool together this stuff and add some new gameplay elements."
You know what seemed like a random idea?
DC versus MK.
That's pretty random. But I did like someones suggestion for Sanrio versus MK. I know most of you want to see Hello Kitty open a can but fear not...I'd MUCH rather see Keropi take Sonya out with some crazy ass Animality.
On a side note, anyone else remember that crazy ass Japanese fighting game that had Barbie VS Optimus Prime (I am not making this up.)It played like Smash Bros.

If they kept the weapons aspect, they could do MK vs SC. I think they could mesh those two worlds simply. MK vs SF would be cool, but Street Fighter isn't typically about killing. I would play it though.

I'm not adverse at face value to the cross over of mortal kombat and DC, But...
Have you seen the game? It looks fucking horrrrrrrrrible. Midway needs to hire some people that know what people look like when they fight. The characters in the new MK games look like giant plastic dolls fighting each other. It looks so unnatural.

How many people are die-hard comic nerds? How many people will almost get into fistfights over which superhero could beat which? How many people would take a dislike to Superman being killed by a ninja?
Now because of the way American comics work, consider that these people probably layer several generations...
I don't know how the backlash could come as a surprise...
(personally I don't care which way either side goes, haha)

I laugh every time I hear someone say something like "MK needs to be put to rest." Pretty much every MK game gets good reviews and makes a lot of money. That doesn't sound like a dying franchise to me.
I don't know why these anti-MK trolls on the internet think that their opinion is automatically the majority.
Every MK game is decent at worst. Street Fighter, on the other hand, has had some flat out terrible games. Anyone remember the Street Fighter EX games? And if you want to talk about bad crossovers, try playing Capcom Fighting Evolution for more than 10 minutes. I don't see anyone saying Street Fighter needs to be put to rest.
Most of the negative reactions to MK Vs. DC are coming from people who just want to jump on the "Let's hate MK" band wagon.

I think it'll be fun, but I've always enjoyed (most) Mortal Kombat games. Too easy to sneer at stuff before it's out.

McWherter, man, who are you working for...midway? You know that game is piece of crap, visually anyway. And who are all these commenters prasing the game when just yesterday, barely anyone would even acknowlege this game. Either you guys are wishy washy or just going with the crowd. I'm going to stick with my view...it looks like a piece of shit I don't care who says it otherwise. Go back and read yesterday's comment, everything people were complaining about is true.

I'm hoping to see Lobo make the DC roster, he's got that long
chain with the hook on the end... perfect against MK characters.

So when does Super Smash Bros MK come out? Can't wait for the Scorpion vs Jigglypuff or Kirby fights. Imagine how cool Kirby would look dressed up as Scorpion.

I'm sorry, I think the whole MK Vs DC is a fucking stupid idea anyway.
Bar Batman and Superman, DC has no discernible characters, Marvels obviously been done, so they could have gone for another publisher like Dark Horse, Image or Top Cow.
Or wait, how about making a Vs. Game that the fans actually want, like Oh.... Mortal Kombat Vs. Street Fighter???
Esepcially since Capcom games are shite with Vs. now. Capcom Vs. Tatsunoko, yeah i'm sure that'll sell by the bucket load in the west.
