Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe Impressions Of Crow Eating
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on July 19, 2008
Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is the musical equivalent of the MK team's Kid A, says associate producer Hector Sanchez. For those unfamiliar with that Radiohead reference, maybe MK vs. DCU being the video game equivalent of a post-make up KISS will make more sense. Regardless of the rock allusion, Sanchez essentially told me at E3 that after seven slogs through the MK universe, expanding and retreading, rinsing and repeating, it was time for a change — a big change.
Like Radiohead and KISS before them, the team decided that there wasn't much further they could take the Mortal Kombat franchise without doing something radical, hoping that after the shock wore off, that the core fans would come along for the ride.
I suspect that they will, with DC devotees also hopping on board. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is currently resting at the top of my personal list of biggest surprises at E3 08. Not only is it disarmingly fun, it reminds me of my favourite entry in the series, Mortal Kombat II.
That game may represent the fondest of memories for fans of Midway's Mortal Kombat series. It was bright, but somehow managed to remain moody; dark, but somehow still full of vibrance.
Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe brings the series back to its roots, somehow managing to have Krypton's only son almost fit. Superman may stand out like a sore thumb visually — the Flash and Batman less so — but his moveset and his Brutality are totally MK. Seeing Batman pull off a Kung Lao-like teleport via smokebomb or Flash run 'round the world akin to Scorpion's classic teleport just works.
There's a good weight to all of the new characters, and returning fighters — I played Sub Zero, Scorpion and Sonya — feel solid and familiar. They've been updated with some new moves, with Sub Zero getting some of the most spectacular. Seeing the frosty ninja slip through the floor and rematerialise as an icy clone, well, it literally might induce some chills.
Possibly the most enjoyable member of those selectable at E3 08 was the Flash. His flurries of punches look and sound rather painful.
Other cool additions are the "pro moves", essentially double attacks that require precise timing. These moves will not only keep your enemy on their toes, but you'll be able to further mix up your high level gameplay tactics. Obviously, these moves add a bit of risk, as your kombatant will be locked in his or her animation for twice as long.
Fortunately, MK vs. DCU is very friendly to new players. I'm a lapsed Mortal Kombat fan, personally, having most recently dabbled with Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and having little interest in the recent additions to the MK roster. Frankly, with so much lore and a cast of characters that once spanned 60-plus fighters, I welcome a whittled down roster of just 20 or so.
There's a lot of variety in here, despite the smaller character count and the removal of weapons and stances. With "Klose Kombat", the paper-rock-scissors style fighting that is also feature in the new "Air Kombat" sequences, and the "Test Your Might" in-fight button mashing fun, it might be a mediumcore fighting game hit. I was pretty much converted on the spot and think that a good number of the "haters" might be too, once they get their mitts on the thing.

It's stupid concept, but some of our best games are based on stupid concepts, so I will reserve judgement until I can play a demo.
MKII likeness wins points with me, but I also require the classic 5 button layout.
It will also help if you can do fatalities on other MK characters.

Sounds like fun. Back in my youth, I could execute fighting moves flawlessly and played exceptionally well compared to my peers. With that in mind I DL'ed SF II for the 360... holy failure, Batman. I suck at fighting games with the 360 controls. :( It really ahs turned me off to all fighting games on a new platform.
Any advice from others, is this just an SF II 'port' thing, or are all 'special moves' difficult to execute on current gen systems (including PS3)?

@glibby: When you have to sell your fighting game with gimmicks, it just becomes painfully obvious that you're no Street Fighter.
Yes. If there's one thing that Street "Turbo Champion Edition EX Gold Platinum Collection Anniversary" Fighter has avoided, it's gimmicks.
I dig the MK franchise but I refused to believe this is reversing the downward spiral until I play it. I hate the concept. That said, if this really does turn out well, hopefully they'll take that success and put it towards a true MK sequel that is worth playing.

If the idea that this game is like MK2 is supposed to be a good thing, then that is a big sign that this ain't for me.
Mortal Kombat was never a good fighter. It was always a gimmick game. Motion Capture characters and blood sell, but they don't make a good fighting game.
I thought 1 and 2 were fun back when I was a kid, but they don't hold up at all.
I'd take DC vs Eternal Champions over this.

You know the problem I have with Mortal Kombat games? The ridiculous use of the letter K. Every time I try to take a serious look at one of the games, I'm turned off by naming atrocities like "Klose Kombat". Since that will surely never change, I guess I'll just stick with all the other fighters I already enjoy. I really don't need to try to learn another.

@Tye-The-Czar: Superior manga? Sorry, not everyone likes to read about 14 year olds getting tentacle raped. And yes, I realize I probably just flamed half of the readers on here.
But seriously folks...I admit I have little to no exposure to manga. But of what I have seen, there is nothing that makes me want to read more. I see the virtually the same art style in manga-type stuff. Big eyes, spikey hair, and you can almost guarentee an disturbingly underage girl in disturbingly revealing clothing. Compare to Jim Lee vs John Romita Jr vs Lenil Yu. Wildly different art styles. And yes, comic book women are incredibly out of proportion, but at least they're legal.
Oh and DC vs MK looks ok but no matter what the gameplay, it still is a wierd combination.

@futonhead: Mangas vary wildly in style from western comics, in genre and art style.
You admit you don't have a lot of experience with manga, so I'll give you some pointers.
Berserk is an oldie but always a goody, however mangas aren't about heroes or the extraordinary all the time like a lot of western comics are, and it doesn't have to be action packed either (what you've experienced is probably stuff like shounen-jump style manga, full of action and aimed at the younger crowd - ie. naruto/bleach/etc.)
Lots are comedy based, or simply a "slice-of-life", where the main characters are pretty normal and the girls aren't supermodel fit. Sometimes, the main character is a poor bloke just trying to make ends meet, when something somewhat extraordinary happens to him, but even when it doesn't, it's still cool to read about them doing normal everyday stuff that you'd do irl. Seeing it from their perspective is what makes it interesting, and you can easily relate to them. Kinda like Spiderman without all the superhero stuff.
It'd take pages for me to go on, but you get the point.

Although I have high hopes for this game, from what I've seen the DC characters are really cobbled-together special moves of old MK fighters.
Flash seems to be an almost complete rip-off of kabal, even doing the running spin (the author of this post should really learn his mk), superman seems to be combinations of sindel and sub-zero, with a touch of kano, and batman is almost a complete rip-off of the mk ninjas (smoke, noob, ect...).
I guess what I'm saying is instead of using these new characters' powers to invent new and exciting special moves, they've took a look at each characters abilities and said "hmm what do we have in the 'generic bag o mk special moves' that'll fit this guy?"
I also need to reinterate the fact that the author of this post does NOT know his mk, so we shouldn't really judge by his impressions THAT much.
"Seeing the frosty ninja slip through the floor and rematerialize as an icy clone, well, it literally might induce some chills."
Umm... that's called the "ice clone" and mk3 sub-zero could do that, so other than some asthetic differences, this "new" move is at least 15 years old!

Oh. Hang on. Apparently I fail. It's just some of the good ones (DC Heroes) that don't have fatalities, it seems? That's cool.
Just seemed like a bit of a cop-out to abandon what they started.
Although, I don't mean to imply that focusing on gameplay over gore is a bad thing - perhaps this is a mature step in the right direction.

Just in case it still hasn't been said, here's how Fatalities are going to work:
DC Heroes do NOT kill. They can, however, be killed. Fatalities are in place for all MK Characters and all DC Villains.
DC Heroes have a "Brutality" where they smash the shit out of their target. Superman's involved hitting his opponent in the head so many times he was buried in the ground with just his head sticking out.

I've loved most of the Mortal Kombat games. I love the entire universe. I also love DC. The mixture could be good. But I can't help but notice when watching the previews for it that it still hasn't solved the one problem with the game.
It is WAY to Slow.
The fighting in the newer games, although I like it, They are extremely slow. I thought that when they said they were rebuilding the fighting system. The only problem with it was it was too slow. Especially with new fighting games out that are much faster, and have a much more in depth fighting system.
I love the MK games, And I will probably purchase it, but If they want me to play it a lot and enjoy it. I was hoping they'd speed it up, and maybe it is faster, But judging by the previews, It still looks too slow for my taste.
