@Qalbert: You do realize that HDD's exist for something other than just trailers, demos, and music, right? That being said, if Sony was planning on giving developers this option, they should've been more discerning on how much GB was going to be in a standard console. People with the 20 gig are screwed. Royally. I got the 40 gig because I didn't want Motorstorm, and I'm starting to regret it. I'm about to dish out some money on a USB hub and external hard drive... and yes it's going to cost me more than 100 dollars. Currently I have 2 USB port because I never thought I'd need more. I bought a headset that was USB instead of bluetooth because I wanted to save some money, my keyboard and mouse take up 1 USB port, charging a controller takes one, and an external HDD takes one. That's at least 4 USB ports in use at pretty much all times. Currently, I don't have my HDD, but once I do it's going to start getting interesting.

@SmooveRN: Quite simply, it garners a lot of attention for the PS3 because that's a thing console aren't known to do or require in the past. On the PC it's a thing of bread and butter. Like, if I had a PC game that ran off disc, I'd be quite underwhelmed, if you know what I mean. The last game that did this on the PC that I played was Dino Crisis 1 by the way - just a bit of useless information.

It's a fighting game. How many possible resources does it need to load? It cannot be greater than that which is found in Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4 or Burnout Paradise. I'd have to say shoddy optimization on the developers part if this was true.

For those who paid $499 for a 20GB PS3, big installs limit their freedom to play a more than 4 games simultaneously. After installing MGS4, GTA IV, and Devil May Cry 4 you basically have no hard disk space left, as those 3 games alone just ate up about 13GB of the 20GB you have.

Assuming, like the 60GB and the 360's 20GB, that out of the box a portion of that 20GB is not available because its being used as a cache(the 60GB PS3 has about 50GB available out of the box, if I recall my own PS3 correctly) then that 13GB of installs just left you with absolutly nothing left. So the solution is to constantly delete installs/re-install every time you want to play a new game, and there is practically no room for downloading games or trailers of the Playstation Store.

Thats why these installs are a problem. The PS3 is not like a PC in which you have a massive amount of memory at your disposal. Imagine if every good PC game required a minimum 40GB install, rather than the small 2 GB ones everyone is used to. That would suck, wouldn't it?

And the argument that people can upgrade their hard drives falls flat because after dropping $499-$599 for a PS3 there shouldn't be be the added cost of an extra $100 for a hard drive to use the damn thing convieniently. No one expected these massive installs when they bought PS3s and they have come up as a nasty surprise.

Playstation 3 has installs due to the Blu-Ray disc reader. They inserted a readeer of 2x, that in practice (making the calculations) its still slower than the 16x DVD from Xbox360. That means that every game needs to install something in the HDD in order to have competitive loading times... shame on you PS3. Why not a 4x or 8x!! WE wouldn't need to install this crap on the HDD. It's funny, ppl then have a big HDD for what? for installs? Please, let me go back to my pc...

@bubble-bee: but then Blu ray would have lost to HD DVD . Remember PS3 is a trojan for BD that carried it for the first year. There wasn't any other BD player out there as good as the PS3. That's why. It's whatever Sony needs it to be at a certain time. BD gave Sony more money. So that's why it was out early. Heck it would have been out a year earlier and it would have been even more disastrous for us. BD was top priority for Sony and the games came second. Maybe they thought developers could handle it. Guess not.

Sony needs to help the developers now. They won the BD/HD DVD war now they need to focus on optimizing the games for the system.

AND! on top of that, i can erase all the mp3's as i've changed my set up for listening to music in my apartment, i can erase all the videos as for the most part they're there because im lazy, and i can erase the heavenly sword, ninja gaidan installs because i either dont own them or dont plan on playing them any time soon.

so yeah look at all that stuff already there and i still have like 10 gigs and i could delete like 90% of it very easily. WTF are you all putting on your systems? seriously.

if you have a 20 gig system then honestly upgrade teh fucking hard drive you could get a 60 gig sata for probably 40 bucks if that. actually, doubt you could even buy a 60 gig sata anymore. turns out checking on newegg and tigerdirect, a 60 gig drive is in fact in low stock. seems 80 or 100 gig is the way to go but even for the 100gig one you're only looking at like 80 bucks.

seriously even with teh 40 gig its very easily managable and not the end of the fucking world.

Who cares how big these installations get? So you can't play immediately; big fucking deal. If an installation is what it takes to reduce the load times from previous SC games (I'm looking at you, SC3...), then I'm all for it.

And look on the bright side: if you ever run out of space, you have the option of getting a new hard drive. The PS3 even gives you backup and restore tools.

Installs are not a bad thing. They speed up load times and generally make the game run much smoother. For those that do not feel a console should require installs, get used to it. Games are only going to get bigger, not smaller. Besides, what does it take... like 10 minutes to install a game? Big deal, why not pop the game in, start the install process and go get stuff you will need during your gaming session. Its hilarious how many people get up in arms over waiting 10 more minutes to play a game. Also, larger capacity hdd are cheap and easy as hell to put in. I have a 250gb hdd in my ps3 currently which only cost me $110.
