New Call Of Duty: World At War Screens
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:30 PM on July 11, 2008
Ahead of what will no doubt be a big push for the game next week, Activision have released some new screens for Call Of Duty: World At War. Again, they're split between the Pacific and Eastern fronts, leaving us wondering when we'll get to see something from the British sections of the game.

@UNRIVALED: I would say the mass appeal was more so because of the smooth gameplay and how noob friendly it is. Anybody can pick it up and get a handful of kills.

CoD3 wasn't spectacular imo, but I did finish it and it was a good time waster. The graphics are looking good and hopefully treyarch will have learned some things from CoD3. The gunner screen's look sexy.

I'm looking forward to this. Sure there are MANY WWII games, but very few good one's (in the online multiplayer aspect, atleast). But this one looks like a lot of fun. I love the single shot bolt action rifles and old-timey weaponry in general.

I think this game looks pretty cool, and I may wind up picking it up. Sure there are a lot of WW2 games out there, but I haven't gone out and purchased every one that comes out so I haven't really burned myself out on them yet. I guess we'll see how this one fares once its released and see what people say, and hopefully it's more than just "it's another WW2 game so it sucks."

Treyarch had such a good excuse for why CoD3 was subpar (8 month dev time), that I'd like to give them a second chance. It's a small consolation for the return to history's most game-inspiring war but at least it's not the European Theater again. Would it kill anyone to make an FPS set at Waterloo?

Still not feeling it. Granted, I've always been pretty cold towards the CoD games because of the ridiculous amount of scripting and seemingly lack of reactive AI but this one is just not doing it for me.
I think that the combination of less than a year between the two games, the return to WWII, the same missions that have been around since the first game, etc. is just...boring. Maybe a demo or some hands on previews will change my mind but I doubt it.

@UNRIVALED: You might want to put a little more thought into your comments, not that they are particularly bad or anything but they could certainly use a little spicing up. For example, calling the Kotaku writers Xbox 360 fanboys won't get you any Kotakuite points. Consider it friendly feedback. Yes, I do have an unhealthy obsession with checking every posters history, well... the bad ones at least.
I'm looking forward to this game, but I probably won't get around to buying it until early '09. It comes out at the same time as Gears of War 2, after all. I'm positive that Treyarch will do a good job with this game, an extra 16 months over their last effort (CoD 3) should help considerably.

No, no, no, they're doing it all wrong! Can't they see what we want these days? They have the setting down perfectly, having us play one man in a war-torn world, but the man is just some soldier!
What this game really needs is some 50 Cent. Possibly mix in some time-traveling.
But seriously, I think too many people here are not fans of giving people second chances. As far as gaming has gone for me, I've always given another chance to those who might have flopped the first time, and I am usually more or less satisfied the next time around.

Oh crap, can't edit my post, but I forgot to mention that MP is where CoD/CoD:UO(especially) and CoD4 shine. Think about it, with the internet and all, MP is the biggest fad. Any game that comes out these days with purely SP capabilities at best will only do well. MP capabilities increases not only the fun value, but the longevity of such game.

In response to:
Scripted AI - Fine, I actually semi-like it. CoD's SP is a story telling game. Are you gonna crap on the Metal Gears because the game is scripted and the AI is semi-predictable? It's a story telling medium. Hell, in many competitive sports, you can predict your opponents, if they are trained. That is to say, if you are a boxer, you can predict the movement of someone who is a trained boxer more than you can predict a newb.
On top of that, CoD4 is modern. Many people aren't history junkies, or even WWII junkies. All they know is the M16 is the shizz(arguable), the Uzi is fast shooting and inaccurate as hell(false), and .50 cal rifles are the best(arguable again). They aren't WWII junkies, nor are they weaponsmiths.
I'm glad it's returning to WWII. I had some of my best gaming experiences in the original CoD. Though having SC2, D3, and Fallout 3 coming out some time, I may lose 20+ years of my life to gaming.

Id really like to see if they can "change" the lone wolf mentality COD4 created with players on teams and hopefully COD5 will create a more proper squad based experience.
As silly as it may sound it would be nice if they broke it up into squads or at least let folks pick their weapons / gear load outs allowing for medics or demo folks and what not.
Since when you throw medics into the mix and engineers it really helps folks stick together a bit better and such I do feel.
Kinda like how Battlefield Bad Company folks kinda seem to be learning how to stick together now due to how classes work.
Granted I think that game has quite a bit to go in terms of proper balance and all but thats besides the point.
But Im looking for a more team based experience since a bit sick of the one man army approach that goes on in COD4.

@Witzbold: "But Im looking for a more team based experience since a bit sick of the one man army approach that goes on in COD4. "
I wish I could agree, but I hate trying to rely on crappy people in the game who don't know or try to take A or B or C, and when to defend it once we have it. And people don't listen or say anything tactical on heasets, at least on PS3.

@Witzbold: And thats why I never, ever touch CoD4 online anymore, and I play TF2 instead. The community isn't always perfect, but the people you play with in that game are generally much better team players than the ones you find in CoD4. It also helps that the design of TF2 encourages strong team play.

I really don't get the popularity of COD 4, so I'll likely sit this one out. I just got off of playing it and it can just be such an irritating game. It's just that so many matches get so impossibly lopsided. We'd win one by a ton, then lose by a ton. Let's put it in Halo terms, which I obviously prefer based on my avatar (though I also prefer UT, Gears, Resistance, etc etc.)
I play a ranked game of Team Slayer. I am level 2 and just started playing yesterday, but even in a ranked game I play level 55. My gun has no scope, doesn't zoom, less shields and fewer grenades. My battle rifle takes 4 shots to put you down, while yours take 2 or 3. They get a radar and I don't because I lost the inital duel due to inferior weaponry.
When the opponent predictably gets a killing spree, lasers shoot from the sky and kill me where I spawn, just to unbalance it some more. After the lasers kill me, the other team gets an A.I. controlled banshee that hovers over my head, killing me where I spawn, and I may or may not have a weapon that can kill it, even if I live long enough.
It's just not fun to get spawnkilled constantly, and it's just not fun to own people that way either.
I guess people like the fact that they can totally decimate the other side, or they are addicted to earning the next level or whatever. Even the fact that you can't see what weapons your teammates are choosing is annoying. I had a game where we all grabbed shotties and then got picked off by their snipers because we had no retailiation. By the time we switched classes, we were getting air striked and coptered to oblivion and it was pointless. We couldn't even move out of our spawns.
I just don't get why they don't use Truskill behind the scenes more effectively on 360 at least, to even out the player skill. It's all so random. And the runaway popularity of the game makes it more likely that its gonna get cloned and these features are going to pop up elsewhere, which sucks.

CoD4 does have a squad mentality as long as you play it with friends and your party is the entire team. that way you know who will be sniping, who will be using a P90/AK-74u for the close and personal battles, and who will be positioned in the mid-ground with an M16/G3/M4.
that way you have the majority of the map and most situations covered. if the opposition happens to call in a helicopter then a bout of team shooting brings it down within seconds.
i prefer CoD4 over all other FPS out there - even taking into account my halo insignia avatar here! - as it places a lot of emphasis on map control and tactical awareness, over and above twitch gameplay. if you know how to flank someone, or where they will be going, then you can anticipate their movements and act accordingly.
i would counter the argument by Witzbold who says it is a lone wolf game, as though one person may come out on top in kills or score, without the contribution of his team mates they would be left high and dry.
illocon
Witzbold
Posted 6:08 PM 11/7/08
@illocon: Also proof against your last sentence look at teams where the rest of the team real low scores but one player has 3 digit score. The team doesnt matter to a player who is good enough to function on his own. Since most of the time unskilled players will only really wind up in getting the better one killed by either getting in the way or causing friendly fire incidents.
The only thing other lower skilled players do is basically act as distractions to the opposing team. So I wouldnt exactly call that a contribution as you state it.
Witzbold
Witzbold
Posted 6:03 PM 11/7/08
@illocon: Think about how the game is made.
Its designed to award folks who go run off on their own more than team efforts. Even more so how you dont get credit for your "challenges" unless you perform the kills yourself.
The game is designed against team play due to how the leveling / exp system rewards folks. So it burns that into peoples minds more than anything causing the lone wolf mentality in a majority of players. Which by far outnumbers those who can play tactically and as a team.
That is what I am saying.
Witzbold

Posted 6:32 PM 11/7/08
@Witzbold: I love the game, but I have to agree, it's essentially "Kill everyone who isn't on your team," and that's it. No real tactics.
Granted that could just be because I play on the PS3, but mostly no one even wants to communicate with each other. You'll see a few of headset icons, and a bunch of silent players all doing their own thing.

@Thorax: Its the same on the 360. Asides from your average screechers and other folks you want to shove your boot through their faces.
It is rare when you will find people who are actually communicating proper, or more like know how to communicate for that matter.
Hardcore games is slightly more tactical due to the single life. But not many folks play hardcore so.
Id really like it better if the way the private chat function worked was that it allowed for multiple people in a private chat and not just only 1 on 1. That way you could have your group of friends in a private chat without having to fuck around with goddamned muting everyone else.

Well, it's Treyarch, so of course it will go back to World War 2. My whole issue with Treyarch is the fact that Call of Duty 3 was a satisfying game, granted, it made me feel like it was a place holder in the series as Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4 (Both made by Infinity Ward) have now placed COD3 in the eternal backseat of the series, but I guess certain play mechanics in COD3 really turned me off. For instance, I didn't enjoy the "tap the shoulder buttons as fast as possible while in a hand-to-hand fight for my life against a German soldier" mechanic. Furthermore, the narrative just felt lacking in a way that I wasn't compelled to play COD3 in the same was I was drawn into COD2/COD4 a lot more in the sense that I never lost sleep over the game made by Treyarch. Infinity Ward however caused me to not only lose sleep but a day of work or two over the their games.
