Disgaea DS, Or Photoshop Goof?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 7, 2008
New Nintendo hardware? Or just a Photoshop goof? Pictured is an ad for upcoming Disgaea DS from the latest Nintendo Power which features a DS Lite with a wide screen. We're betting on Photoshop goof, but a widescreen DS Lite would make sense.

Horribly amateur Photoshop skills alert! You'd think whoever did it could have at least tried to make sure the screens lined up!

The widescreen ds would be freakin' awesome. However... What's with the red light? Seriously, whoever made this pic is a complete idiot. That is, IF he's officially working for a legit company. If he made it to mess with the fanboys, he's a true genius. Geniuser than Einstein's and Colbert's invitro clone.

If it makes sense, and it involves Nintendo, it sure as hell isn't getting done.
If it makes sense technologically, and it involves Nintendo, it's not getting done for at least two-three generations.

Wow. This wins dumbest thread of the day.
I'm sure they weren't trying to "fool" anybody, nor is it a goof, nor were they trying to win a Photoshop contest. They probably just wanted to show the images as large as possible within the established concept for the ad, and took some artistic license to do so.

This is just for making the adverts more visible. But of course, we blog commenters must point out the "mistake", criticize and make fun of it.
This was probably done by a guy who had a rough day, and simply wanted to get an ad done in an easy way. His bosses asked him to get DSes with the ads on the screens on the cover, and he did it in the best way he could.

@InsidiousTuna: "Also, there's a Disgaea coming out for DS?"
Came out in Japan about two months ago, so . . . yes.
Also, I recall the last time Nintendo denied rumors that they were announcing a remodeled DS -- it happened just before a large videogame convention called "E3".

On top of the bottom screen you can see the old screen; where this guy just tacked on some dodge disproportionate work. How sad, I've doctored several pictures in my time, and this is just not up to snuff; not the type of quality I'd try to pass off as authentic, lol.

I heard a Wal-Mart Commercial on the Radio the other day. It said that the Nintendo DS had Widescreen gaming and multimedia capabilities. PSP wasn't mentioned once during the commercial. Since it was more or less a commercial for the DS at Wal-Mart. Found that extremely amusing that they couldn't even get the product description right.

Looks like a photoshop to me. Sorry if someone already mentioned this (cbf to read through the posts) but the bottom screen doesn't seemed to be aligned with the top screen.
What I don't understand, and although everyone seems to expect (myself included) what is the point of another DS redesign? I mean, what more can they do to better it but still keep it a DS Lite? You might as well just make a new portable at that point. Unless it's going to be a gimmick like the Gameboy Micro.

Looking at my DS lite as I read this, the wide screens would push the d-pad and the buttons pretty much to the edge of the unit. Which would be mighty uncomfortable and probably often frustrating.
That is, if the unit were to stay the same length/width. If they were to stretch it out a few centimeters, it would probably work.
Would a large touch screen, even if it kept the same aspect ratio, cause play issues with older games? I'd like to find out.

The DS is just a frame for the game ad, so they em-biggened it to show more about the game.
Too bad, really, I've always felt the screens on the DS to be a bit lacking in size.

@ObZen:
Oh hush. I agree with that. They did good there. Also, their advancements in 3D were also great.
It's the recent Nintendo that ticks me off. Save for the Wii remote, anyways, they seem to have a "minimal effort, maximum profit" approach to pretty much -everything- they do. Especially game design... ESPECIALLY anything at all that involves Online. Nintendo wants to exert the least effort possible, to make the most money they can, with absolutely as little risk involved.

I think they did it just so you can see their game on the small DS screens.
Nintendo could make a bigger screen unit, but that would eat into battery life unless they made it much more efficient elsewhere (does it still use CCFL tubes? They could go LED...)
Widescreen though, like a twin-stick PSP, would require a whole new machine, not just a revision.

@Human Bomb: I Don't see the point of importing the DS version when there is already a fine PSP port AND NIS saw fit to have it reprinted on the PS2. Having wasted enough time on those two versions, the DS one will stay on the shelf for me. That said, I'll be getting Rhapsody on the DS and Yggdra Union on the PSP, hunt down a copy of Luminous Arc, and continue wasting time in FFTA2.

we'll get a widescreen Nintendo portable eventually, I'm pretty certain this is a Photoshop though. Not only does it look quick and dirty, but I somehow doubt Nintendo would create a hardware incompatibility within a single hardware generation.
In other words, they wouldn't create Widescreen DS games that'd be incompatible with the first two incarnations of DS hardware. It'd just be a major goof if they did.

Why the bloody hell is anyone even speculating about hardware changes based on an ad for third-party developed games?
When Nintendo wants to announce they've finally got a model with a screen big enough to depict Mario's gigantic cojones, they'll be putting slightly more effort into it than this.

@108: You're thinking Disgaea 3, that's what was released in Japan 2 months ago.
Also this is 100% poor photoshopping on Atlus's part. If you ever look at most of their trailers/teasers for Disgaea games getting a port or translation, you'll notice goofy mix-ups like just english text over japanese gameplay or improper ratios, like shown here.
