Box Art For Atlus' Dokapon Kingdom
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 10:20 AM on July 24, 2008

Atlus loves to talk about how its upcoming PS2/Wii "party RPG", Dokapon Kingdom, is going to make you and all of your friends hate each other as you fight one another to be the best kingdom-defender and win the hand of Princess Penny.
But man, how can there be hostility when these screens look so damn adorable and hilarious, seriously? Fist-in-teeth, girl-squealing adorable?
You're looking at the official box art for Wii. Release date is October 14th.

I want this as bad as I wanted the original mario party. That is saying something.

the last Dokapon I played was the GBA version. The battle system was interesting but relied on having good gambler's luck, something I've never really had.
This game sounds like it really relies on strategy, which I like in a game. Atlus seems to be fond of that too (I seriously can't put Etrian Odyssey 2 down..)
The Darkling option sounds really intriguing. Nothing like wrecking someone who thinks they are on the top

Wellsir, it looks like Mario Party - which could be good or bad. I'm sort of intrigued for some reason by this concept.
However, I'm holding out for a photo-realistic party rpg on the Wii (sorry Atlus!)

I kind of get the feeling Atlus is transitioning into semi-decent shovelware. I hope not they are in my top 3. They need to put on the brakes a bit and spend more time on certain titles.

Atlus, eh? Guess there'll be more flat chest jokes then?

Because Wii owners are happy to get a non-shovelware game period?
This is a game I would buy for the 360, and might be the first Wii game I wish was on the 360. (NOT a fan of Nintendo IP anymore)

Well, I agree with you there. I just wanted to see what you meant by "real gamer."
Personally, I would love to see more (new) games with retro or stylized looking graphics.

Played the PS2 Japanese version - and it was fun!
Never mind the graphics, the game play is more than enough to make up for it.

The graphics are pretty lame, it looks like they aren't even thinking about trying to do anything that requires, you know, effort.
But it's an interesting premise, so I'm still listening.

"My point is that I'm just surprised those comments weren't tossed at this game, considering the backgrounds look like they could have been done on the N64."
Yeah that makes sense. I just never understood the obsession with better and better graphics. I mean most of my favorite video games are still on the SNES, N64 and PS1; some even arcade classics.
@Mrevilbobguy:
Yes that's what I'm saying. But I'm not saying a "real gamer" is a "core gamer". You made that equivalence in your own head. And a lot of casual gamers complain about graphics you just don't hear them on comment boards like these. i.e. a lot of sports titles-only gamers.

@NeoAkira:
So are you saying that just about every casual gamer is a "real" gamer?

@NeoAkira: My point is that I'm just surprised those comments weren't tossed at this game, considering the backgrounds look like they could have been done on the N64.
And I strongly believe it has a lot to do with being an Atlus game. Yeah, they've got a solid track record, but still, I feel that if this exact same game were put out by, say, Conspiracy, it'd be dumped on by the vocal minority. How does a game get that positive buzz in such a fickle gamer market? It's maddening sometimes.
And I would like to agree with you with regards to your "real gamer" definition...as a Wii developer, I wish more people would give games the benefit of the doubt and try them before judging instantly that the game isn't cool.

@roland13x:
I would say a "real gamer" is someone who doesn't condone a game because of some kind of technical limitation. If the game plays well and it's fun it should be more than enough.
"Go back and take a look at just about EVERY Wii game posted here, and I would be there's a similar negative toned graphic-related comment on each game."
What's your point? If everyone in the world thinks that the earth is flat does that make it anymore of a valid opinion?

@NeoAkira: What exactly is a "real gamer"? Go back and take a look at just about EVERY Wii game posted here, and I would be there's a similar negative toned graphic-related comment on each game. But this one has Atlus on the cover and it's from Japan, so I get it gets a slide. Just sayin....

Because to the real gamers graphics aren't everything: *cue* DS vs. PSP lifetime sales
@Kreepman: Don't hold your breath.
This looks pretty cool. If they can find a cool new way or two to use the Wiimote in the game I'm sold.

I've found that sometimes the cutest things hide a sinister ability to turn friendships sour.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo was the cause of more than a few "friendly" bumps and bruises in it's day.

This might e something, but only if you paint the opponent's face irl.

Wow...over a dozen comments on a Wii title yet no one has said "graphics suck" or "looks good....for a Wii game". Why is that? Because it has Atlus on the box? Just curious...

I think it's like a board game (Mario Party/Itadaki Street style) with RPG elements. Apparently when you visit a shop you can attack the shopkeep, and if you lose the police are on your tail for a few turns. When you win a PvP battle you can perform a prank, like changing their name or drawing on their face while they're unconscious.

I think this'll be a no-brainer for me. I've always had fun with the old mario party game (number 1, never bothered with the later ones =P ) and this looks like a much more vicious bag of goodies of that type =3
