New Trailer for FEAR Sequel, Project Origin
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on July 14, 2008
More creepy little kids, more long hallways with flicker lights, more stuff to shoot, Developer Monolith Productions just dropped their new E3 trailer for Project Origin on us. Project Origin is the sequel to creepy shooter F.E.A.R. This new trailer shows off some new weapons, enemies and locations. Stay tuned next week for our hands-on impressions of the game when we play through a chunk at E308.

@ara: From the look of things with Remnants and Abomination, the horror will indeed play a greater role in the shooting. Much greater.
@Deviation59: Yeah, thankfully the levels look a lot more varied here.
I think this is a game worthy of the hype. They had a solid foundation of AI, weaponry, visuals (originl release), audio, slow-mo action and storyline in F.E.A.R..
Basically where the game was lacking were scares, gunplay (sorry but the old magic zoom aiming is horrible), visuals (console ports), level design and some enemies (heavy armours were the shit). All that looks to be resolved here.
I think that this game will take a surprising chunk of the online community. People are still sadly unaware of what this game is, or haven't bothered even checking media because of their attitude towards the F.E.A.R. ports, and I think that will change between now and the game's release.

The fear multiplayer was so awesome that they had to make it free because so many people were just downloading it illegally.

FEAR had almost perfect shooting mechanics even if some of the environments got a bit repetitive. Definitely looking forward to this one.

I hope they can marry the shooting and horror bit better this time around. I was really enjoying my time whenever they flicked the horror switch on, but it was always over after a second or two and back to slaughtering army of generic bad guys.

Just so everyone knows, the expansion packs (except Perseus Mandate, I think) are not part of the "true" continuity. When Monolith and Sierra split, Sierra kept the rights to the name "F.E.A.R." Monolith got the sweet end of the deal, as they got the rights to the story, characters, and everything else that matters. It would be hard to explain that F.E.A.R. Files isn't "really" part of the F.E.A.R. universe and Project Origin is, but eh, no biggie.

OR...ooor another Blood or AvP game. I don't care for F.E.A.R. M.U.C.H, but give me some thing along the lines of NOLF, Blood or AvP and there'll be another FPS worth waiting for.

The problem with the FEAR franchise for myself has always been that it's just not that scary. To be fair, after years of slaughtering monsters, ghosts and all hell's legions, perhaps I've become a wee bit desensitized to things in games we would traditionally consider "scary", but FEAR always came across as sort of "I don't know what I'm doing" when it came to making the decision between a generic shooter and an attempt to frighten the player. It had its moments, mostly when you see that little red-dressed freak crab-walking towards you in an air vent, but overall it failed to unsettle me as a survival horror game, or engage me as a FPS.
Obviously some others feel differently, that's fine, to each their own. But speaking as someone who honestly tried to enjoy the original and the expansion pack, I'll probably be taking a pass on this as it just looks like more of the same to me.

stop fucking around Monolith, and make a sequel to NOLF already goddammit!
I (we?) need some FPS stealth with some humor. I'm tired of all these games of late being so dead serious.

I think it would help if they made a little mention of this being made by the same company as Condemned 2..

@Zero_Beat: Good, that's what I thought, glad someone cleared that up.
First one made me jump a couple times, got my heart racing as well, regardless of the scare factor. This one looks equally good.
@Bergerac: I agree, FEAR did have some of the best actual game mechanics aside from repetitive level design.

If Doom is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, F.E.A.R. is the Ringu.
Personally, I am more keened to psychotic horror then massive splatters.
Looks great!. Also, one of the most underrated multiplayer game; it actually got bullet-time balance right. Too bad the spawn system was absolute garbage.

Yeah, FEAR was a cool game, but scary? Hell no.
AVP 1 was a scary game to play as marine, since then scripted single-player events inspired by Half-Life killed all the scariness from FPS-games.
I'm actually getting tired of this constant stream of FPS-games to PC/Xbox360/PS3, I'm only excited about Deus Ex 3 and that is only because Deus Ex 1 is still the best single-player FPS experience I have played, but if the developers follow current trends of game development that game will surely disappoint me.

@Hansel: Yeah, I mean, it has quite a few WTF moments but like Yahtzee said, being a "bullet time karate kicking Superman doesn't help you feel afraid". FEAR should go steal some of the cliff notes for Alien vs Predator 2 and Dead Space.

My only problem with Project Origin is the name. Whenever you hear about it, the title is always given the addendum "The Sequel to Fear."

For some reason, when i played FEAR i was not immersed in horror moments after i figured you are fighting only humans...humans are just not scary =), and ghost moments were too short. Here, i see some kind of mutant tearing down players face...Guess this one will be helluva scarier =)

@TheCleaningGuy: Have you seen the video where the team tries to decide on a name? My personal favorite was S.A.U.S.A.G.E., but I would have settled for one of the hilarious metal-band names as well.
Project Origin? Really? How generic, guys.

@Calhoun: What didn't you like about the FPS mechanics? I really enjoyed all the shooty bits, actually. The AI was astounding for its time, and they had some great firefight set-piece moments throughout.
But I can understand the lack of actual scares. I thought it had great visuals, but--as someone else mentioned above--it's difficult to feel frightened when you're a balls-out super ninja packing enough firepower to level a small office building. Great imagery and pacing, but it's very difficult to feel frightened when the solution to any given problem is a handful of bullets away.

I know the whole legal battle between the F.E.A.R. name and the F.E.A.R. developers. They should have been real sneaky and called it "Afraid"
It wasn't a scary game, but it was creepy and that's a whole lot more effective.

f.e.a.r. had the best A.I. of any game ever....enemies would flank you, toss grenades from unexpected angles to flush you out, retreat for backup, lead you into ambushes....
I hope they put as much attention to advancing their already amazing a.i. in this 'sequel'.
additionally, it would be good if they changed up the textures more....going up and down n round n round an office building is only interesting for so long.
the ramping of the difficulty curve needed attention...with the weakest enemies at the end of the game its hard to know what they were thinking, as they even looked like they should have been more challenging

Despite the way it wasn't "really" scary, FEAR had soem of the best feeling weapons in a game I've played. Having shot most of the guns in that game, It really captured the feeling you get from shooting them.

@JustThisGuy: Keeping in mind I haven't played it since the launch month of the xpac... I guess for the combat, it always felt like my character was overpowered, and the only time I'd really be taking much damage was if I was surrounded by guys, or if there was something cheap like a ghoulie coming at me out of the ceiling or floor.
The scripted events were the kind of thing I felt were too bluntly advertised... enter a big empty room with two floors, and guys are going to be coming out on the balconies and shooting the top of your head, etc. Enter a hall with a single light midway down, and it's going to go out and shit's going to come at me in the dark. That kind of thing.
It's not that it was a bad shooter, it was just fairly unremarkable when compounded with the rarely scary fright content. Maybe I bought into the hype a bit too much? I dunno.

That was worth the 50 bucks.
