Nickelodeon Rolls Out Avatar MMO
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 6:40 AM on July 26, 2008
Yes, all MMOs have avatars in them, and Xbox 360 will now have avatars in it, too. But the MMO that Nickelodeon is unveiling this September is about the pseudo-anime TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender. I guess I'm not up on what the kiddoes like these days, because I thought the Avatar craze was kind of over, but Nickelodeon says its recently-wrapped Season 3 finale was its highest-rated TV show ever.
M. Night Shyamalan is even making a live-action movie called "The Last Airbender" based on the series, to debut in July 2010. With Avatar interest at an all-time high, Nickelodeon seems to have decided the time was right to make an MMO that serves as a "prequel" to the TV series.
Regardless of how you feel about Nickelodeon cartoons, this is actually an immensely cool idea — when Nickelodeon re-airs episodes of Season 3 in the fall, fans tuning in will get episode-specific hints from the TV show about unlocking things in-game. Having a multiplayer online game that runs concurrent with a TV experience is a great way to encourage players to be more involved with both game and show, I think.
Full announcement follows the jump. By the way, which TV show would you most love to have a tie-in MMO going on with?
NICKELODEON UNVEILS NEW AVATAR MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GLOBAL GAME IN SEPTEMBER
Gaming Event Continues Momentum Following Highest-Rated Series Performance Ever, the Avatar Season Three Finale
NEW YORK-July 25, 2008-Fresh off of its highest-rated performance ever on TV, Nickelodeon will treat Avatar: The Last Airbender fans to a unique experience this September with a brand-new, multiplayer global online game. In the game, Avatar: Legends of the Arena, which will serve as a prequel story to the series, players can create their own Avatar character and test their skills against players from around the globe in several 3D online arenas. Each game level will introduce and unlock new content, challenges, custom character outfits and more on an ongoing basis. The global game will live on a dedicated website http://www.avatarlegends.com and the beta version of the game http://www.tinyurl.com/5j6j6j* will be unveiled at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 25.
"The launch of this multiplayer online game gives Avatar fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the storylines during and beyond its tenure on-air," said Jason Root, Senior Vice President of Nick.com. "This property has always had a deep online connection with its audience and the game offers a natural extension of the franchise to keep fans engaged with the property indefinitely."
The global gaming event, which represents Nick.com's (http://www.nick.com) first 3D multiplayer online role play game, will take place in 81 markets in ten languages, including: the United States; United Kingdom; Australia; New Zealand; India; Southeast Asia; Canada; Mexico; Argentina; Spain; Italy; France; Korea; Japan; Israel; Holland; Northern Belgium; Germany; Brazil; and Portugal. A total of 77 countries will launch the game on Sept. 15, with the remaining markets launching through the following months (non-domestic territories will vary).
Each 3D online arena within the game will host battles featuring up to four players at a time, but combat isn't the only focus of the experience. Players will also be able to engage in role play, building their characters through training and arena duels. As players advance, they can upgrade their characters, unlock new bending moves, and acquire outfits and other exclusive equipment to make them the envy of others.
The animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, has inspired M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender", a live-action epic adventure from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies which will debut in domestic theatres July 2010. Series' creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will serve as executive producers on the film.
This fall, Nicktoons Network will serve as the on-air home for Avatar: The Last Airbender, and will feature a Sept. Avatar event and season three episodes of the series throughout Sept. and Oct. Additionally, Nicktoons will offer fans a chance to get in on the Avatar game, asking them to tune in on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. for episode-specific hints that will unlock exclusive content in Avatar: Legends of the Arena.
Available on DVD July 29, Avatar: The Last Airbender - Book 3: Fire - Volume 4 features the kid hero's return to the Fire Nation to prepare for a final confrontation with Firelord Ozai. Fans will also have a chance to get their game on with Avatar The Last Airbender:Into the Inferno, a new action adventure video game from THQ, in stores this fall.
Launched in February 2005 on Nickelodeon in the US, the epic story of Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the journey of Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), a 12-year-old boy torn between fulfilling his fate as the long-awaited Avatar and just wanting to be a regular kid. The Avatar season three finale, Sozin's Comet, recently earned the series its highest ratings ever. The previous week's season three new premiere episodes reached a total of 19 million total viewers (P2+). Avatar is a top ranked show on Nickelodeon's international channels, and is number one on Nick in Holland and Germany.
DiMartino and Konietzko serve as executive producers of Avatar: The Last Airbender. DiMartino is an award-winning filmmaker and has worked on the prime-time animated series King of the Hill, Family Guy and Mission Hill. Konietzko was a character designer for Family Guy, assistant director on Mission Hill and King of the Hill and a storyboard artist and art director for Nickelodeon's Invader Zim.

I really hope this is good. Give this show a chance if you haven't seen it. It's the best cartoon I've seen in years.
That video from the announcement looked ok. Seems like it's mostly going to be battling in the arena, which is a little disappointing. I'd prefer a more RPG style MMO with questing and fighting. And I hope they don't allow users to create the main characters, like they show in the video. It would be kinda lame to just see a million Aangs all the time.

It's not a "pseudo-anime" if it's done in the anime art style. Unless you only think of shows from Japan as "anime". In which case Transformers is the most popular anime at all, despite it's rather American art style used.
Hmmm, a DangerMouse MMO would be fun to play.

I know, right? I was expecting there to be a fourth book since each book is one of the four elements. They should have made the last episodes a little bit longer to show some reconstruction and put those final four episodes in the the book of air, or something.
Oh, and they better have blood bending in this game! That'd be my largest reason to both get the game and choose water as my element.

Venture Brothers MMO is a GREAT idea.
I'd love to have a Firefly MMO. I heard there was going to be one awhile back but I'm not sure if it was a rumor, or if it's still happening or what. But if they did it right, it would be great.
I think a Dragonball Z MMO could be done good as well. It would have to be an action MMO.
A Transformers MMO could be neat. You get to construct your own Transformer and pick its vehicle mode and then the game will procedurally figure out how it transforms.

It sounds like a pretty solid idea, though I'm a little worried about a few things:
- The title suggests some sort of arena, which is a bit odd; I don't want the whole game to be about some arena battles when the show was about so much more.
- It's made by Nickelodeon. If I were them, I'd have outsourced this project to a more experienced developer, especially for a series with so much potential and with such a large following. If this is pulled off right, it could be great, but considering the vast majority of MMO's have been flops, it'll take a lot for me to be confident in this game.
Also, I would've liked to see what happened after the series ended since there were so many possibilities and open ends. However, I understand since Aang is the last air bender that it would kind of gimp the bending selection gameplay-wise.
@Jayge: You are not alone, my friend. Hell, I'm in college and I've got a good number of friends my age that watched the show all the way through too.

Firefly would be not a bad idea, especially if the creators could get Whedon's notebooks and mine ideas he didn't get to use before the show got cancelled.
An offshoot of Batman/DCUO: Play as part of the MCU, investigate crimes and take down supervillains/the Mob.
Whomever mentioned the L&O MMO...sign me up. Play as criminal or as police/DA. Part CSI, part KOTOR Jedi Lawyer, part Phoenix Wright.

When I hear the word Nickelodeon, I think of kids. Hmm, I'll pass on the MMO. The age gap is too wide for me. As for how I feel about the MMO, hmm - well, I think parents should be aware what their children are going to be doing online, because it sounds like a pedophile's paradise. Personally, I don't think any MMOs should be directed to kids younger than 14. There are just too much punks that would make them cry... not to mention the "bad guys" on the web.
As for which TV show I'd love to see in an MMO, Stargate. :) It already is in development, but I just feel that there is so much room for pretty much anything!

I really suggest that you people check out the tinyURL link in the press release. And excitement you may have had will quickly disappear.
Just from that short clip, the game looks AWFUL. I can understand it's an early build and that they still have 2 months to polish things up, but everything about it makes it loud and clear that Mick is just cashing in, they're not trying to reward the fans which made the show a success. I understand that the entertainment industry is about money, but this is just sad. The character models are pitiful, the animations are stiff, the over all presentation makes those random Korean MMOs look great...
This wouldn't bother me so much if Avatar wasn't such a great show with amazing source material to work with. But, no, the 'mmo' they give us is some arena fighter that looks like a bad Quake mod.
I'll with-hold any further judgment, but from that video alone I can only hope that some other group picks up the license and makes something that does the show justice.

@Ka@KaneRobot: "Or a Mr. Wizard chemistry set simulator for the Nintendo DS."
Do you know how useful this would actually be in a chem lab setting? You could simulate pretty legitimate, fundamental lab experiments anywhere. Teachers and students could use Wi-Fi to collaborate and monitor results. You could play with incredibly hazardous reactions.
Hell, there's little reason why there couldn't be measurement attachments for that powered GBA port: pH meters, thermometers, that sort of stuff.
I've been wondering, ever since I played Trauma Center, why there weren't more useful, educational biology games. Then the physics games started coming out the woodwork. Now I get to think about all the chemistry games that could be out there, too. Yeesh. Why isn't this happening in the classroom?

There should be a crime procedural MMO (Law & Order for example) divided between criminals and the cops and lawyers who try to put them away. There'd be unlockable conditions that would help your case like a history of mental illness or mob connections. The best part would be that the constant griefing that goes on would finally make sense.

Imho the Naruto world would make an excellent MMORPG. This may have been said before, and I am also quoting from a Lord Rasengan's blog on 1up dot com, but Imagine a cell shaded mmorpg, with a ton of options for character customization. Your character will be have to learn and develop jutsu depending on your style and element, like water, fire, etc. Or you can train your character to be a fierce martial artist, nothing but taijutsu in your repetoire. Or you can select to be born under a certain clan or class, like the Hyuga clan or Uchiwa clan, and you will have to master the techniques and live with the burden of whichever clan you choose to be a part of.
When leveling up, you will start in the ninja academy like Konohamaru's level, which in gaming terms is level 0~10. Genin level will be the equivalent of 11~23, 24~36 will be Chuunin level, 37~49 will be Jounin, then anything above that level you can follow different paths like S-class or Sannin Class or even reach Hokage level. Then if you choose to reach Hokage level, you can go out and establish your own village (like how Orochimaru did) or you can create your own Akatsuki.
This will lead to great PvP battles. This won't be your typical castle seiges, no, this will be much more than one ninja vs. another. This will be clan vs. clan or village against village, the scale would be huge!

I'd be thrilled as hell if it were a Danger Mouse MMO for the PC.

I think this is a show that has done a terrific job building a universe. It's well thought out, each part of the world has been fleshed out culturally and it's supernatural elements are intriguing and well-woven into the world.
Whatever you think of the show, the world it is set in is better than many, many games I've played in the past.
The arena concept is one that was kind of jarring at first, but may actually work in an MMO setting. So long as you can travel the world, interact, and collect equipment in much the same way as other MMO's, arena fighting could really work.
Most combat in MMO's lacks the adrenaline one might look for in a game. Combat is based on D&D style dice rolls or card game style skills where characters simply stand next to each other walloping away at a target that hardly reacts while damage numbers pop above their head.
Imagine instead, dropping immediately into an instance of the area where fighting has more to do with the talent required in fighting and arena games than who has better armor or who can place attack cards in a synergistic manner.
These are qualities that any original IP might gain attention for, but because the story was established on Nickelodeon, I hear nothing but flames.
For shame. All of you.

@Altima NEO:
No it's an american drawn anime, to even claim otherwise is ridiculous.
Anime is an art-style for animation, it isn't "anything drawn in Japan" people though just can't seem to get this past their thick skulls. What is even more ironic is that manga and anime both share their ancestry from American comic books.

I'm watching Avatar right now, as a matter of fact. I LOVED the show, and really hope the rumors of three more seasons set after the end of the Firelord saga are true.
The world is so rich, and there are so many more stories that could be told. And a chance to experience the world between the time of Aang disappearing and his coming back, the war itself, could be pretty cool.
Granted, of course, they make it GOOD. If they make it like "Toon Town" or whatever that kid one is, it will fall on it's face very quick.
But when Nick comes out and says that over half of their audience is adults (either parents watching it with their kids and loving it, or just adults that watch it anyway), I think a more complex MMO might have a real possibility of succeeding.

Granted, those games are really no good at all.
I think this has more to do with the fact they are action/adventure brawlers released on timetables not dissimilar to 'licensed' action/adventure brawlers released alongside their movies.
Put a decent development studio behind it, give it a timetable you would give any major Triple-A title and it might be good.
The same reasons the previous Avatar games weren't good are the same reasons any game isn't good. It has little to do with the IP itself.

There's a lot of potential for this. The Avatar universe has some great concepts for powers and lore with the different "bendings" and even things like Suki or Mai's physical skill sets for variety.
It also helps the world is established and you can already get a connection with different landmarks and "heroes". It's actually very similar to the way WoW was going in with the amount of lore and how much the world was already built up before it.
I'm hopeful, but I don't know how well this will turn out from a technical standpoint.

"The finale was sweeeeeeet. Predictable, but sweet."
My wife actually described it as beautiful. Good description, honestly. I was really wondering how they were going to wrap it up, as killing Zuko's pop was really the only way this was going to end, because his megalomania would have never let him step down, even in total defeat. But killing him was completely contrary to the character of Aang, and he would have been the same.
In fact, the only thing I can remember Aang ever actually killing was the bee/vulture thing that took Momo after he lost Appa.
This series was great, in all honesty, but I can see why Nick didn't know what to do with it. Their target demographic obviously was kids, because you can market toys and such to them. But when half of your audience is adults (drawn by a story so good and complex it really had no business being on Nick anyway), the only thing you can really market are the DVD's.
Sure, the show is hugely rated, but who is paying for the ad space? Think about it: Half your audience is going to be old enough to market cars too, the other half still is pining for the cereal they just saw with a big cartoon tiger on the box.
Widely successful or not, advertisers probably wasn't seeing a return on it enough to warrant the purchase. It makes me sad, as my entire family (PapaBear, MamaBear, and the oldest BabyBear) were all hooked on the show. I plan on buying the DVD box set when it is eventually released, and hopefully Nick decides to put out a straight-to-DVD type affair later on.

Couple last things, too. Warning, long geeky rant to follow:
I think the end for Azula was probably the best and most fitting. Live out her days completely batshit insane. Paranoid, stumbling around, openly weeping as she spits fire (literally) after knowing she's been beaten.
Sakka's sword and boomerang. Anyone else sad to see them go? Sure, they saved his and Toph's life, but still.
Anyone else want to get up and cheer when Aang reached out of the rock pile and grabbed Sozien by the beard, all glowy and pissed off? Watching him slap the Firelord's blast off like it was nothing but an annoying party trick, power up and gather all the elements into a huge ball of pissed off energy while the Firelord crapped himself was the most fun I've had since "The Exodus" episode of Battlestar Galactica. You know, where they jumped the damn ship into orbit? Yeah, this scene was THAT awesome.
I wanted to see more Iroh fight. The guy always kicked ass, even fat and chubby, so now that he's all buff and charged up on Comet power, I wanted to see him at least fight ONE of the main badguys. Not just random "red shirts" from the Fire Nation armies in BaSing Sei. But hey, at least he did it efficient like.
I also wanted to see Tai Lee and Mai get into the action too. Those two were always fun to watch, due to their lack of bending ability but still managing to kick ass. Wish in one hand, shit in the other, as they say.
Finally, the music during the final battles. Simply amazing. The muted violin solos, strange silent interludes, instrumentless voice parts... Just a great selection that was chosen perfectly.
Ok, I'm done. I think.

The arena sounds promising, but only if they can make a good physics engine for it. With 3 of the 4 bending arts having a telekinetic aspect to them, without any physics engine to go with it, meh..., it would be bland. From the press release, it seems like it would be mostly based around the arena fights.

Hmm... I love the show, but I've never been interested in the games. If they can actually use all the lore they've built up from the series, then I can see how this could be good. The show got increasingly more mature as it went on, since the notice a shift in their fan base, so if they go with something nice and solid, like PapaBear434 said, well have a good game. But then again... We could just as well end up with a watered down "Toon-Town-Flyff" type dealy. That would sting.
