Ninja Gaiden II Mission Pack Take 2
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on July 29, 2008
Well TECMO and Microsoft did release their Ninja Gaiden II Mission Pack this past Friday as promised, which stealthily infiltrated players' games and killed them. Seems like a very ninja thing to do to me, but apparently users started getting a bit upset when their game started getting corruption errors after unlocking the first new achievement. The pack was pulled, but on top of that the title update that preceded the release is causing freezing during cutscenes. Luckily the folks at the Gamerscore Blog have some good news...
The team believes they have isolated and fixed the Mission Pack problem that some of you reported earlier this morning. They will continue to test it over the weekend and are hoping to get it back onto Marketplace on Monday. If you already downloaded the pack, go ahead and sign into LIVE. Your achievement should update allowing you to continue playing. The freezing issue is still being investigated.
...and some bad news. That's what you get for paying $60 to invite deadly killing machines into your home.

Wait. I think I just realized why this is happening. Itigaki planted a program in his game that would make it self destruct after he left the company. Well Itagaki, consider the code a success. Sneaky ninja bastard.

Didn't DOA4 kill xboxes too? I think this is just a tecmo thing.

@Moonshadow101: I hear that all they did was essentially add "Kill X number of enemies" with the "Mission Pack". Why does it affect the game so badly. Me = confused. And if I'm wrong about the content in this game, blame my indifference to the game. I apologize for my ignorance.

They should pay us for testing their content/patches. I mean, what's the point of the certification team if they didn't even try the main game with the patch installed, or play MM online til the first achievement unlocked?
Of course, I'm not sure how exactly they work, but these issues were found extremely quickly by the community, so I just have to wonder how it slipped under their radar.

@mcderek3000:
All new? This happens on PC too. I can't think of game problems off the top of my head, but I can think of patches that broke things and were withdrawn, well more than a decade ago.

@GrrSnort: ...You seem to be missing the bit where, in those days, the content wouldn't be coming out at all.

I kind of long for the days when something stayed in the cooker a little longer to prevent patches like this. It's fine in online shooters, but single player games really have no excuse.

Its unbelievable that Tecmo released this patch.
Didn´t they play the game not even once with the patch?
It happened to me in chapter 10. I cleaned the cache, didn´t updated the game and played fine until the end. And two minutes after finishing the game, when I started to play Bioshock my 360 crashed. E74.

@SteveeVader: the game was disappointing for not camera reasons, but pacing and overall unpolished content.
Ch. 7 was the best, but the rest were a let down.

I'm glad to have read this news today as when I fired up the game the other day and downloaded the update and continued with my game, it froze in the middle of an unskippable cutscene. I panicked and immediately cleaned my disc (twice) and then tried clearing the hdd cache (which also wipes game updates) and then tried playing without updating. I was able to play fine after that.
If anyone's curious, I got the crash in a cutscene on mission 14, just before you have to climb that riduculously long staircase.

I have no problems with PC games and patches being wonky at the beginning, everyone has different hardware configurations. Easily excused for PC, but it shouldn't happen on consoles. Ah well, not a big deal, just annoying.

I'm a Ninja Gaiden fan, I agree with those who say that NG 2 has an awful camera, worse than any of the previous games. Seems like they can't make DLC right as well.

Mentor is a real bitch, and it's actually harder then Master Ninja, probably. You don't get as many rocket pod ninjas in MNM

@GrrSnort: Masochism is a good word to describe it, I'm trying to do the first Trial portal on Mentor. It's like throwing your hand into an industrial fan.

Meh, I'm no masochist, so I'm not really a fan of this game. It looks good, but I played the demo to see how pretty the graphics are. I will sum up my impression of it in the form of an analogy: It's like watching a porn with the most beautiful women in the world and it was filmed by a 90 year old arthritic.

ah thank goodness it's not just me with the freeze issue. I think i just hit one that is a game-breaker in lvl 14. Most of the other ones i could just skip the cinema and it would be cool (I didn't really mine since this is my 2nd play through).
I was worried that it was just my console (given the scary-high failure rate of 360s). I hope they would patch this ASAP as I am pretty sure this is a game breaker. I think i am approaching Dagra Dai and there is no transition to the lockup in that video, it just starts and immediately locks up so i am pretty sure I can't skip over this one. This sucks because I am on the cusp of wrapping up Warrior difficulty and Dragon Sword master.
At least I didn't have to pay an extra $10 for my lockup. I guess I am starting to experience what they call "Next-gen".

@SteveeVader:
Good > Better > Best
Bad > Worse > Worst
Ninja Gaiden 2 has a bad camera control, it is much worse than any other game you have played thus it is the worst you have experienced.
Now that the grammar lesson is over (and before someone tears my example apart), I've been hit by this glitch too. The cutscene one that is, I don't see the point in paying for the extra mission packs considering they should have shipped with the game and what I have isn't really worth the purchase price.

I think the actual control of the camera is better, the problem is they changed its angle. It's too close to the ground now so you can't see enemies that are right in front of you. It also seems to be zoomed in too much. As a result it's hard at times to tell what the hell is going on and to keep track of all the enemies you're fighting.

It seems that consoles have not only inherited the PC's love of bugs and patches, they also seem to have invented the all-new broken patch.

@SteveeVader: I'm a true NG fan and I have no problem with the camera. The game is much faster paced then what I remember the first one to be, sometimes its hard for the eye to follow. Maybe its that for some ungodly reason, I haven't been put in a bad camera situation but I think people are blaming the camera when the should blame the fact that its hard to keep up with something that moves so fast.

@SteveeVader: i'm constantly surprised at how a camera can go from fine to utterly broken in just one game transition despite being exactly the same
Infact, the NG2 camera is much easier to use as it doesn't require you to click in the right thumbstick to switch to camera-control mode like Black did.

@sandal-hat17: Actually I would think that this is a Japanese thing. They would sneak in to the xbox folds, acting like they are willing to make games and shit, and then BOOM!! FUCK YOU UP GOOD, ROUND EYE!
I'll bet my ass cherry that FF XIII will make the xbox crap blood.

Remember, June is Ninja Month on Xbox Live. And how do we celebrate Ninja Month? By failing to release anything related to the one ninja game on our system! Enjoy!
Seriously, was I the only one who saw this coming when the skull videos went from being released on the 14th to having "coming soon" on them seemingly indefinitely? I was interested in those partly because I could use a reason to replay one of my games, but mostly because I'm a cheap bastard and they were free.

It's Tuesday here dammit!!! WHERE!!!
The Camera IS bad, but it can be worked with, which makes it better than several unnamed games out there. I guess Team Ninja is thinking of a "You were focusing on this direction, so you shouldn't be able to see that one" kind of feeling...
But why are you guys even discussing how good the game is when we're talking about content?

@weinerman: Clear your cache and then refuse the update when it prompts you. It'll work fine after that. Only bad thing is that you have to download every update for all your other games again.
The thing that bothers me about this is that I can't be connected to live and not have the "patch".
