I'm all for a new re-design for the system, but adding widescreen wouldn't work for the very reason you said in the article. Also, it'd better be a bigger change than just that. Look at the Advance, SP, and Micro. They all look very different. Keep with that theme if you're going to come out with a 3rd DS model.

And fix the D-Pad. DS Phat has a perfect D-Pad. DS Lite has a horrible one. You need to put more pressure than I feel comfortable applying in order to do diagonal directions.

Jesus Christ. Look right above the bottom middle screen. You can clearly see whoever did the ad just photoshoped a couple wide-screen shots over the DS pictures. The curves and screen outline from the bottom screen are still there.

Someone either put those on there for effect and it means nothing, or (deep breather) the game is being designed for a wide-screen DS and they just didn't have any shots of the new system to use.

Personally, I don't think it's the later.

P.S. Very excited for Rhapsody. That game was impossible to find for the original PlayStation about 15 minutes after its release.

And despite purchasing it twice already, I still find myself excited about the prospect of Disgaea DS. But man, "Afternoon of Darkness" was such a great subtitle for the PSP version...couldn't Nippon Ichi have come up with something a bit better for the DS title? Isn't there some sort of cut-off date for placing "Super", "64", "Advance", or "DS" in a games title? I thought that typically became passe somewhere around year 3 of each console's respective life cycle.

While I didn't put any stock in this particular rumor, I still believe another redesign of the DS is inevitable. I would be surprised if it's revealed any earlier than TGS though, but who knows? It does seem like for the last few years Nintendo has been basing their E3 presentation around a single, major announcement...perhaps the DS Hudgie™ is 2008's big reveal.

I'd believe it. Sure, they're most likely working on tweaking design, it's Nintendo. They're always looking to both improve upon their handhelds, not to mention sell more hardware. I would doubt they would let someone take actual pictures of a prototype for a gaming advert though, and instead, the guy who graphic'd up the ad just enlarged the screen so you could 'see the running game on it better.'. Even there's nothing but artwork in them thar boxes.

How could Nintendo possibly remove the GBA slot when thrid parties are using it for accessories? Namely Taito's paddle for Space Invaders and Activision's Guitar hero.

Removing it would create a rift, just like increasing screen size would. Unless it's a COMPLETELY new system, the GBA slot won't disappear.

My guess is they wanted to put as much focus on the screenshots as possible, while still having the entire DS in frame. The only way to do that would be to enlarge the screenshots, which is what they did.

Uh, the DS is already in widescreen, but it's 16:10 like an apple monitir, rather than 16:9. That redesign just has bigger screens, so you can see what's going on better.

@NoBullet: I think he means the screens don't line up vertically. If you draw a line, following the right edge of the top screen, it doesn't line up with the right edge of the bottom one. Same with the left side, it's just harder to notice there cause there's a flying penguin thing in the way.

It's obviously a photoshoped screen to just show the picture better. The DS looks like a photoshopped frame where any screen could be dropped in. They just didn't size the pictures right.

Yeah, I have a feeling if this article had run with a B&W scan, you'd have seen people running to the hills screaming how Nintendo was going crazy for releasing a system with monochrome display.

And did anybody notice that the person playing the DS in the picture is a penguin? Maybe Nintendo is designing a new DS that can be used by people with flippers! The right flipper also has water drops on it, so we can assume the new DS will also be waterproof, which is awesome because I can take it snorkeling now. I can't believe nobody else noticed this yet.

@Foxstar Sixtail: Really? It may shock you but the vast majority of those "casual gamers" that catapulted the DS to superstardom don't give two shits abut GBA compatibility. And why should they? Those same people obviously never gave two shits about the GBA either.

Those who bought the DS for brain and/or puppy training will clap their hands like circus seals at the prospect of a sleeker DS...particularly if Nintendo manages to squeeze in some added functionality.

Still it's about time they make a brand new handheld system. Especially since the psp is gaining ground in Japan.

A wide screen DS like system would be nice. Have it mimic the iPod touch/iPhone (i.e. include an accelerometer) and give it music/movie playback abilities, and Nintendo would have a winner in my book.
