Nyko Media Hub
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on July 3, 2008
Were you one of those folks that opted for the cheaper 20GB PlayStation 3 without the card reader and now regret that decision? Perhaps you picked up the 40GB version that lacks the card reader and only featured 2 USB ports in front? Sure, you could have a USB hub and a card reader dangling off the front of your console, or you could wait until August when Nyko releases the NYKO Media Hub for the PS3.
This little gadget plugs snugly into one of your PS3's USB ports, looking for all the world like it was meant to be there. The hub not only adds three more USB ports, bringing the total to either 4 or 6 depending on which system you own, but it also adds a card reader slot that handles both SD cards and Sony's own memory sticks.
Very nicely done, Nyko. A peripheral that people actually need that doesn't screw with the form factor of the system. The Nyko Media Hub should be in stores next month with an MSRP of $US 19.95.
NYKO Media Hub Announced for the PlayStation 3™
Details Surface on Upcoming Three Port USB Hub with Multi-Card ReaderLOS ANGELES - July 2, 2008
Nyko Technologies®, the premier gaming peripherals manufacturer, today revealed details for its upcoming Media Hub for the PlayStation 3™. The Media Hub easily attaches to the console, adding three additional USB ports and a media card reader slot that supports SD cards and Memory Sticks. Compatible with all PS3 models, the Media Hub matches the colour and contour of the system to expand its media capabilities while maintaining a clean form factor.
The all-new Media Hub from Nyko attaches to any available USB port and enables the connection of three additional USB devices including flash drives, PSP, MP3 players and additional controllers. Its unique design requires no tools or internal modifications, draws its power directly from the PS3, and easily installs in just seconds.
"We found that many of our customers who had purchased the popular 40 GB version of the PS3, which has less USB ports and no media card reader, were looking for an affordable solution to expand with these features," said Chris Arbogast, Director of Marketing at Nyko Technologies. "With the Media Hub, an additional three USB ports and a media card reader are now possible for all PS3 models, allowing consumers to enjoy the full capabilities of their multimedia system no matter which model they choose."
Nyko's Media Hub for PS3 is expected to hit store shelves by August 2008 for the suggested retail price of $19.99. Please visit www.nyko.com for more information.

@unangbangkay: Justifying the Eye is quite tricky, and Trials of Topoq does nothing to help that.

@E-lai-e:
As far as the Warhawk headset goes, it's Bluetooth, so you wouldn't have a USB port problem there.
This is a little off topic, but does anyone know why Sony doesn't include a SB cable with the Dualshock3. I think that is an incredibly cheap decision. If I pay that much for a controller they should at least include all of the cables needed to use it properly.

I didn't even know that various versions had a different amount of usb or lacked media ports. I'm glad I got a 60gb version.

If Nyko had included an IR port that would allow people to use their Harmony remotes and even turn on the system that way, Nyko would make a fucking mint on these things.

It's strange that the PS3 is one of the ONLY devices I know of that early adopters didn't get shafted on. I am SO glad I decided to buy my 60gb used on craigslist of all places (turns out the seller was my neighbor one apt. over!). I'm having fun playing Persona 3 FES with its near-100% BC, streaming porn through the wireless connection, and trying to find reasons to justify the fact that I bought a PS3 eye.

I went from a 60 gig to a 40, and the fewer ports hasn't really affected me.
The cooler temperature is definitely noticeable, and welcome.

@gamerholic: You've just answered my question... I was wondering if anyone really ever makes use of their USB ports... I'm not a Guitar Hero/Rockband player....
Is there any other common use for it? i mean, does anyone ever use a mouse or keyboard on their PS3? Is that even possible?

The features dropped for current models makes me think that this time around, I probably won't "upgrade" to the inevitable slim model -- not if it means losing the handy built-in features of my 60-turned-250-soon-to-be-500GB (yeah, it's a new ultra-limited edition SKU).

NSFW by itself is more than a regular fish could handle, but the Kotaku fish can do that and more, like... pointing at stuff! It's not all about hiding gonads and melons!
Impressive, truly impressive.

I do not know how you guys manage to live with only 2 or 4 USB ports ...
My list:
1 PS-Eye port,
1 Guitar Hero port,
1 Singstart port for my GF,
1 Controller Charger port,
1 Micro SD to USB converter port (that I use quite often),
And I have a 60 GB model, if I used the 40 GB one I would be in lots of pain long ago...
What if I wanted to add an external USB drive in addition to that? Or the warhawk headset?
This USB hub looks very useful. Wish they made it with 4 USB ports and without the card reader...
Wonder if you can use two of those at the same time, side by side...

Looks like it would be wide enough to block the other port...so would you turn 2 USB ports into 3? not 4? Also I've noticed that some items such as the microphones need to be directly plugged in or require an externally powered usb splitter. Would this still work?

This might be worth a purchase even for the 60 gig, as currently the USB ports are under the overhang of the SD reader, causing me to have to lift the system up from the floor to plug in a cord. 20 dollars seems like little enough to allow me to be more lazy.

Great idea, fits nice, but woulda been nice if it matched the shiney black of the PS3 as opposed to the matte black they used. Otherwise, if I had a PS3 I'd buy it. Mainly for Rock Band :D

kind of sad that if nyko can offer this at $20 that sony couldn't have just left on the additional usb ports and reader.
it obviously isn't saving them that much (and is actually probably adding costs since they would have to have two unique lines to assemble the 80GB and 40GB systems).

I thought I didn't need my 4 usb ports on my 60G (320G now actually), but I'm glad I have them because 2 are always occupied by the controller's usb cable and the other by the blutooth headset that came with Warhawk. And the other remaining are used when playing Rockband, or when I connect an external hard drive.

Nyko gets aesthetics, and I dig that. Their Wiimote chargers match wonderfully; they look like a first-party peripheral. (I still say that rechargeable Wiimotes is how the Wii should have shipped; it's the only way to go.)

Nyko is a bit late for this one. I already bought a 4 port usb hub that was $5 and sorta matched my PS3.
I have a 80gb and my usb slots are always full even with the hub (controller charger x2, ps2 controller, hard drive, mouse, keyboard) which leave 1 open, but I always have some random usb thing plugged in

no necessarily. only the 360 version of rockband came bundled with the usb hub. the fact that the guitar in the ps3 bundle was wireless and included the batteries for it negated the inclusion of a usb hub (plus if you owned a 20/60GB model, it wasn't necessary).
