Penny Arcade Adventures Coming To PS3
Posted by Mike Fahey at 6:40 AM on July 24, 2008
See? It was only a matter of time! The Hothead Games folks have apparently found their way around issues with the PlayStation 3 and the Torque Engine, and now Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One is heading to the PlayStation Network this fall. Rejoice, and stop emailing Hothead to complain!
"We keep getting emails asking why our Penny Arcade game is not on PSN", said Hothead's CEO, Vlad Ceraldi. "We have always said we wanted to have our games on as many platforms as possible to give choice to gamers. All good things take time and we are very excited to be debuting our first PS3 title and look forward to bringing more games to this platform in the future".
The PSN version will feature similar pricing to the Xbox Live Arcade and PC versions, so expect to shell out around $US 20. Enjoy the first screens from the PS3 version below, and be sure to check out our review to help you decide whether or not you should be excited about this whole deal.
PENNY ARCADE GAME COMING TO A PLAYSTATION(R)3 SYSTEM NEAR YOU
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - July 23, 2008 - Hothead Games today proudly announced that its well received Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One is currently in development for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system and will debut on PLAYSTATION(R)Network late fall 2008.
Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness is an RPG-Adventure game series set in the comic-book-meets-pulp-horror-meets-H.P. Lovecraft deranged 1920s universe of New Arcadia, delivered to gamers via accessible episodic releases. Players join Gabe and Tycho, the crime-solving team of the Startling Developments Detective Agency, to combat savage enemies and solve mysteries hidden deep in the sinister heart of New Arcadia. The game is the result of close collaboration between Hothead Games and Penny Arcade, featuring distinct artwork and characters designed exclusively by Mike "Gabe" Krahulik, story and dialogue by Jerry "Tycho" Holkins, and all brought to life by the Hothead team.
"We keep getting emails asking why our Penny Arcade game is not on PSN," said Hothead's CEO, Vlad Ceraldi. "We have always said we wanted to have our games on as many platforms as possible to give choice to gamers. All good things take time and we are very excited to be debuting our first PS3 title and look forward to bringing more games to this platform in the future."
The PLAYSTATION(R)3 system version of Episode One will be priced in line with the game on other platforms.

alright, so enough with responding to trolls. point is, this is a great announcement, cause its a great game, really enjoyed it.
again, we're clearly not getting an earthbound this gen, and mario RPG aside, there's not nearly enough fun/lighthearted RPGs going around. this really filled that void for me - yeah, its pricy and its not overly long, but totally worth it.

I guess they have changed the source code of the engine. If you buy the commercial or the indie version you get the complete source code!

Just as long as they dont shut off one platform midway through the series. I got it for the 360 instead of PC because of achievements and the controller (didn't like the spacebar thing).
PLEASE dont stop making it for w/e platforms it comes out on.

There is still no Torque for PS3.

Torque and Penny Arcade? No thanks!

Grive
Posted 7:34 AM 24/7/08
@Nickatiah: They did mention it. There was no Torque for PS3 back when they made the game. You could modify the engine to make it run on the PS3, but that was something the dev team had to do, instead of having an "official" PS3 engine, and they didn't want to take on both challenges.
So, it basically became a "let's wait until either a supported PS3 version comes out or we have the resources to do it".

@Aex:
They implied that it was never going to be on Steam, so a lot of us (me included) bought it from Greenhouse, and then saw it come out on Steam a couple of weeks later. I'll definitely be waiting on Steam (and sale prices on Steam) if I buy any of the future episodes. I can't imagine I'm the only one, and I don't think their Greenhouse service is long for this world.

Gabe and Tycho had made it very clear on their site they were indifferent to the engine not being supported on PS3 before, and didn't express a need to bring it to those consumers.

@Mezodon: That's what I love about the Sam & Max episodic seasons: they offer the whole season at the reduced bundle price right from the time the first episode is released. Obviously that requires a little faith that the whole season will be good, but after the 1st season was (generally) excellent I had no trouble deciding to buy the 2nd one at the start. Reduced price, and you get to play the episodes when they're new. Mind you, those episodes are actually written on the assumption that most people will play them once a month, so they subtly remind you of previous events etc.

@laser beams: The combat is something of a cross between old school Final Fantasy and the Paper Mario games. I found it to be competent but nothing too special. The game world has a nice adventure game vibe with some wonky hit detection, but where the game shines is in the writing. Especially if you're already a fan of Penny Arcade. I liked it but don't think I'll be picking up the next episode.

I'll stick with the same plan as other episodic games... wait until it's done and buy the whole thing for cheaper. That way I can spend less and play it all at once. None of this Half-Life 2 nonsense where I'd be forgetting the story in the long wait between episodes.
@ara: I don't see a Wii version, so they're still not delivering on "all platforms."

Good to see they deliver on all platforms. Biggest complain I have is the lack of pad control on the PC version, I mean come on, I have Xbox360 pad hooked up, the game is also running on 360, what gives? Though I'm not that pissed since it supports Wacom tablets, which makes gaming breeze as I don't have to dig up my mouse.

Wonder if they will add in trophy support. To be honest, I was skeptical about the game, but I went ahead and bought it just for the humor, but I was surprised. The people at hothead did a good job developing a solid game around execlent writing.

@JamesR87: I don't understand this whole sell-out thing.. What is wrong with generating income off something you've created? They have a product, and are expanding their horizons. It's all about monetizing what you own.. Congratulations to them for even having an opportunity to do this. They've come far.
The game is horrid (if you ask me) - asides from the cut-scenes that is.. But to each their own.

I think he is referring to making the game in the first place, not changing it's exclusivity. I could be wrong, of course, but I think them making a game when they were fairly dedicated to the idea of just making fun of them rubbed some thinner skinned folks the wrong way.

@JamesR87:
They sold out when it was basically announced as exclusive to X360 and Greenhouse (the PC digital distro service founded basically for the sole purpose of this game). Then 2-3 weeks after the release, they put it out on practically every distribution service out there.
Frustrating for those of us who have a preference on this sort of thing (i.e. Steam, which they said up front they weren't planning on using).

So, quite frankly, kudos to the dev team for their inclusivity.
