It adds another aspect to the game, maybe challenging the player to do something in game that you otherwise would not have done or even thought to do.
If anyone has attempted all the Achievements in Dead Rising, then you know what Im talking about. And as far as the gamer badge, its a good way to spread the word that you are a bad ass ; )

This Playfire service is really, very, sadly, an utter waste of time and effort. It is yet another site to make PS3 Gamercards out of "static" information. Hello people. Lets wake up, seriously. Until Sony releases the API (do they even have one?) there is no point in making a "fake" PS3 Gamercard.

I am getting sick and tired of all these sites that have this grand scheme of manually updating your PS3 Gamercard. It is pointless.

While others will go apehsit over every opportunity to grab Achievements/Trophies, I will only ever simply attempt doable tasks for the fun of it. I personally like the extra activities but I refuse to let myself fall victim to this as an obsession.

However, this could work out to be enough incentive to finally break my chain of nearly finishing a game and then kinda forgetting about it as its overshadowed by something else. That would be nice.

This article does not speak for everyone. I am not even the least bit excited about trophies. The only type of achievements that I even cared about were Mass Effect for PC where you know.. achievements were more than just a medal like they upgraded shield, damage, etc.

It's awesome that PS3 owners are getting some of these, but watch, fellows: it gets old super fast. I got tired of the 360 cards a couple of years ago. Achievements are a lot of fun-- and I'm sure trophies will be just the same sort of good time-- but after the initial burst it's more of an internal thing than an external one. The joy of broadcasting it to people-- and having them broadcast it back to you-- all over forums and other bullshit? Somehow less enjoyable. Otherwise it just winds up being like this.

I, for one, have grown weary of our meaningless gaming recognition overlords.

I hope they make the trophies for MGS4 retroactive...I wouldn't wanna go through ANOTHER freakin' play through for the Big Boss Emblem again. Though I must say, I love the challenge.

As for one of these, I doubt I'll ever need one. Unless you know, it'll be mandatory for every Kotaku-ite from now on.

Its not fully functional at the moment. It works, but you have to add your trophies manually. They are supposed to be trying to get it automatic but for now it isn't. Not for the lazy.

You have to give credit to Microsoft for the community integration on the 360. Two and a half years later, Sony is still laying the ground work on their system, but I'm sure the API will be released eventually.

I reject any kind of public score posturing nonsense as I find ego only turns games into chores.

I'm just afraid whether trophies are optional or not, some people will refuse to play you or get obsessed and mouthy if you have it turned off or don't have X trophies, making online play that much more fun.

So the scorecard is
X LittleBigPlanet - some day it'll be awesome
X Home - workin' on it, might be sweet.
X In-game XMB - um... I have zero need at all but ok, shouldn't hurt.
X Trophies - keep 'em. Please. PLEASE. This is an anti-feature.

GamerCards are but ONE LITTLE BIT of the overall site. It would make sense for them to get prepared for the inevitable API and as the whole site just left closed Beta to open beta very recently you might want to cut them some slack.

Playfire is in open beta now (I was in the closed beta) and is a creation of the same fellows that created PSU.com and PS3Forums.com

not to gank this post but we have been doing the gamercard thing over at tripletags.com for a LONG time. If you include the original PS3Tags.com well over a year. We are about to launch our own trophy system as well and have well over 1700 "themes" and many layouts you can choose from ;).

This card is looking uber sweet i have to say.

The biggest thing about achievements that annoys me, and would really set them off, still hasn't been addresses by Sony either.

Free stuff, and notifications. Many games give you free stuff when you get achievements (or at different stages in games). Wheres the pop up for that?

As much as i love my e-penis popup on the 360, i want to see what free stuff im unlocking more. At various stages in Halo3 you unlock different Multiplayer armour. Wheres the notification? During PGR4, you unlock certain cars at certain places, wheres the popup? Other games unlock gamerpics, wheres the popup?

Nothing will get gamers more excited than earning free stuff.

another useless way to track something on ps3. i just created my 'gamercard' and now i'm level 2 and have gotten quite a few trophies already and don't even have 2.40 installed yet.

perhaps when sony allows 3rd parties to interact with their trophy system (similar to 360 gamercard sites) it'll be nice, but till then, any joeblow can just 'fake' stuff.
