PS3 2.40 Update Problems And Solutions
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on July 3, 2008
While it seems like every time the PlayStation 3 undergoes a firmware upgrade is plagued by people trying to blame broken systems on the update, last night's 2.40 update seems to have caused genuine issues with many posters over at the official PlayStation forums. Owners of PS3s in all shapes and sizes have been reporting that their systems were loading to the initial PlayStation wave screen and simply hanging there after applying 2.40. No icons, no controller functions, no nothing, just the wave across the middle of the screen.
There doesn't seem to be any real pattern as to which systems are affected. 60GB, 40GB, 20GB, and 80GB systems alike have all been afflicted with the issue. We've contacted Sony for word on the issue, but in the meantime several of the more tech savvy forum posters have determined how to fix the issue, if you're willing to yank out your console's hard disk drive.
Users found that removing and reformatting their PS3 hard drive and then reinserting it into the console would get the system to boot completely, after which it asks to reformat the disk again and everything runs normally. Of course they lose all of their saved games and have to redo all of their downloads, but I suppose that is better than sending in the system for a $US 150.00 repair.
One can only assume that the update was the catalyst that caused certain data on affected hard disks to become corrupt, rendering the system unbootable. It would certainly explain why only certain systems are being affected, and why Sony couldn't have caught the problem in the first place.
We'll keep you updated on the issue as we learn more. In the meantime, feel free to hit the link below to read through 30 plus pages of quality PS3 forum drama.

Works fine for me, though I update it via external USB drive because during the update, at the same time I've upgraded my HDD to 160GB in anticipation of the ginormous Soul Calibur 4 installation rumours. I'm all set...bring it ON!!!

Weird problems here and there for this update. When I tried to update SSHD for the trophies, my PS3 kept beeping then rebooting, but I redownloaded the installer and overwrote my copy of the game and everything's good now. Not quite as severe as the problems mentioned above, but I thought it strange. For what it's worth, ingame XMB is pretty nice!

I'm a 360 owner, but I think this is really getting blow out of proportion. A couple people have a problem and then it becomes "Fire! Fire!" My 360 just "died" the other day because of an E74 error. I never knew it existed until now. But then, I remember having issues with the PS1 and PS2. Anyone remember having to play their PS1 upside down? Or how about the PS2 Disc Read Error? All systems have hardware issues and now with new firmware releases, we have to expect software issues. But, I still think you have fan boys in the Sony and Microsoft camp making bigger issues of the problem then actually exists.
EVERYONE RELAX!
Your sexy black PS3 will most likely be fine.
Enjoy the update!

I downloaded the update a couple of minutes shy before midnight. Installed and played GRID and it worked seamlessly. I think neverythig that people are complaining about is BS, or they like to flick the switch while installing, so if it bricked their ps3, its 60% their fault, crappy internet, bad luck. Or xbots pretnding they own a ps3, because they hav no life

Updated my 60GB UK launch machine, no problems. Although as reported, mine did reboot itself when the install finished which stumped me for a second when I switched back over to HDMI and saw the XMB. Thought it always said "Firmware Update Completed" or something to that effect before asking you to press the PS button to reboot. Odd.

I thougth that after you finished reading all of the comments, you'd figure it out yourself, but wasn't sure if you had already finished them or if you'd posted while still going through them.

So the way I understand this...people with this issue are completely F'd?

So why would returning PS3's cost $150? The update issue is the problem of SONY - if they break (even if it's by accident or as a side effect) it then they should pay for it.
The same thing goes for Microsoft and Nintendo for their updates.

@TuxBobble: third party hard drives??? i think that if you open the HDD bay of your PS3 you will find a seagate HDD and if i am not mistaken Seagate do not belong to sony, so every HDD is in fact third party.

THE ARTICLE DOES NOT SAY REMOVING THE HDD VOIDS THE WARRANTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The article says removing the HDD and formatting fixes the issue, and doing so would be better than sending it in for repair. WTF happened to reading comprehension? Do the words "void" and "warranty" even appear anywhere besides the comments?

"My PS3 no longer plays any disc inserted into it. :( "
Mine did that before the firmware update.
To correct this, turn off the console from the switch on the back. Then turn it back on while holding down the power button. Keep holding until it beeps three times, and then boots up. This resets the graphic settings back to SD, but should clear up your issue (it's like booting to safe mode on a PC).

I installed my firmware last night amidst all the issues and it worked just fine. Here's what I noticed:
alot of the bricked PS3s happened because of premature downloads (where suddenly the DL jumps from 50% to 100% in a blink of an eye) and the data isn't really downloaded properly. another thing i've noticed is that alot of the issues where from people out of the US installing the US update on their foreign PS3.
If your really afrade of your PS3 bricking, your best bet is to install the update via a Flash drive. thats how I did it and everything works for me.
(on a side note... 2 games are currently released sport with this update? what the fark?!)

Sounds quite rare on Kotaku...
Before updating ANY system (like the Wii not long ago with its exploit patch,) back up what you can, and if you can, wait a little while to see how it hits other people first.
The pity with consoles is that you pretty much HAVE to update or anything online is held hostage (with good reason) so people would tend to just update ASAP.
But yeah, for PS3, backup is cheap - stick in a flashdrive or any memory card, and copy those saves!

I have to wonder about some of these "problems". I got my 60GB fairly early in the cycle (like 4-5 months after release) and I have not had a single issue yet. Its not like mine just sits in one spot either as I'll drag it back and forth between school and home every other week. It's my guess that either people are simply treating the system like shit and not taking care of it or 360/Wii people are creating accounts on the forums which seems to happen more often than you'd think.

From what I had heard, people were getting this more who had third party hard drives installed after the fact. At least, that's what I initially thought.
Not long after, people were claiming they hadn't switched drives and still had problems, so I'm not sure what to think anymore. I left the firmware update running when I left the house this morning, since it was taking so long and I figured I'd want to boot it up as soon as I got home from work today. I really hope I'm looking at a positive when I get back, not a negative--wish me luck.
Either way, it's not really that big of a deal. I actually think it will be a pain because my only external enclosure is a 3.5" not 2.5" so I can't hook it up as easily, but I do own a laptop and will definitely be formatting that drive if there's a problem--good thing I keep boot discs around since I'm a computer engineer haha...

I think this is just a bit like the numerous cases we've had of various 360 games being released, and then a flock of systems RROD. Gears killed my 360! Halo 3 killed my 360! etc.
Its just a little something new affects the system, as stated, and either corrupted some wanked-up data, or is the straw that breaks the camel's back hardware-wise.

I downloaded it last night with my 60GB PS3 (upgraded to 250GB Toshiba HDD), with no hitch. Maybe some of their installs were interrupted.
It does get blown out of proportion because the complaints are louder than the successful, bug-free installs. Nonetheless, Sony should be working on resolving those who have issues. Personally, if it happened to me I'd wait before wiping my HDD, at least until there's more information about possible causes and solutions.

I'm a very lucky console owner seeing how I have never ever had any major issues with any of my systems. My PS3 updated just fine last night. Everything seems to be in order. But, if this update is causing problems to other gamers, Sony seriously needs to handle this without charging a cent.

No such problem here, but I've noticed one thing.
Because custom themes weren't designed with web search and trophies in mind (and Home too, once it comes out), instead of a trophy icon or websearch icon you get a huge ? instead. It has happened to my official MGS4 theme and will probably happen to all other themes, bar the default one, too.
Not a major gripe, just a bit confusing.

I've learned to turn off my automatic login and just ignore updates like this until I absolutely need them. I don't play online much, so it's usually a while before that happens.
When are console manufacturers gonna learn? Put out a properly functioning system from day one and then leave it alone. Sheesh. It worked for 30 years before the current generation...

@xMindPrintsx: Yes but microsoft went back and corrected their error (well rrod still exists but they replace for free)
some people at sony are saying you'll have to pay $150
and the problem is not the same for everyone, which is the problem for the team at sony. it's not RROD, just reading kotaku.com i see like 5 different types of problems, and on the linked site i see like 15 different problems.
when diagnosing a wide-spread issue like this it's hard to find the source of the problem when the results are so crazy... then you have the whole 'my system won't even start up' problem it's caused.... i won't be updating till i hear a fix came out, i've been addicted to diablo 2 anyway.

Things like this always amuse me. Any discussion about a subject that might, in the slightest, be divisive, is always populated by the "all or none" types. By this, I mean the Xbox 360 apologists who claim that, since they have personally never had any issues with their consoles, everyone else is either lying, a Sony fanboy, or treats their personal property like a dog's chew toy. And on the flip side of the same coin, you have the ones who claim that, since something bad happened, it must apply to everyone. The only absolute is that there are no absolutes.
For what it's worth... my PSX and PS2 never had any issues until I started specifically doing things you're not supposed to do to them (grabbing the disc while it's spinning, and the buggery slide card, respectively) Both were replaced after several years of faithful, to-spec and untroubled service. Thus far, my PS3 has had no trouble (even with the 2.40 update). My original Xbox never had any issues, but my 360 has been replaced once, and the second one just got back from the shop for repair. And I treat my personal property like museum pieces.
Relax, people. It's not the end of the world.

The one problem I hit was while playing SSHD, I plugged a controller into the USB port. This immediately caused the video to go blank. Restarting the system did not help. Wow, glad I'm not having the problem. The new update is prdy darn sweet, I just wish you could view photos and start chats through the in-game XMB... Generally I think they should size down the in-game XMB for things you have to quit to use anyway, it kind of teases the player into thinking they can do things in-game when they actually can't. I do really like the ability to switch games in the middle of one, but it would be cool to be able to view photos and videos without having to stop your game. Also, the lack of voice chat is absolutely criminal.

Removing the HDD does not void the warranty, however the warranty is only a year old and many of us (myself included) had ours expire naturally sometime ago. However if a manditory PSN update caused the system to break it should be covered by them, warranty or not.
Personally I didn't experience that problem, though I did have issues after installing 2.4. The in-game XMB was horribly laggy, so much so it was barely usable (when playing echochrome no less, heh). And when trying to download/install the Super Stardust HD patch it would shut the game down to begin the download process, but then the console would make a single beep (with no lights) and go back to the XMB. All I did was power down my system and start it up again. Both problems solved, 100%.

one thing did happen few days back, though: whilst exiting MGS4, my system locked. when i reset it, it said the hard drive needed rebuilding, and took a bit counting this down. when it was done, i found everything where i left it, but any changes to file names of pictures, videos etc had reverted to their original ones. annoying, but no harm done i guess - anyone else have this?

that being said, the update was fine with me, except that it took over an hour to download, for some reason... and it wasn't my internet connection causing the issue :/ that, and it took me an hour to sign into MGO afterwards (speaking of which, anyone wanna play at some point?)

See...PS3 has their own RROD issues. I think the only thing that sucks is people who did/do end up with dead systems should get replaced for free by Sony. THIS is what irks me about Sony...they will not admit an issue and pay for it. At least MS did do that.
But thats the risk you take as the systems get more advanced...more things to go wrong. I DO think both companies are rushing things out too soon and not looking at potential issues

If you're uncertain and want to be absolutely sure your data will stay intact even if you encounter this issue, make sure you do a system backup on an USB drive (or just copy all savegames) before running this update.
I don't know if the disk check utility is accessible from the XMB, but it probably wouldn't harm to run that as well before performing the update. It has run for me at least once (probably after turning off the system while it was writing data to the disk, or something), so it's there somewhere in the OS.

As the not-so-proud owner of one of the bricked PS3s I can say it was a factory-installed 40GB unit, two months in operation, with wired connection. Everything went smoothly and as expected. Then the 60%-100% jump and then wavy lines. I'll take you further, a hard resent eliminated the picture all together.
I'm not a noob and I understand hardware and software issue pretty well. The best theory I've seen is that the upgrade is lacking verification (or skipping it) for some reason, thus the sudden jump in the install.
Anway, no snide comments please. I probably just lost all my game saves. Just letting people know this isn't an overblown issue nor is it incompetence on the part of users. I don't even think it's a bad interaction with something on the user machines. I believe Sony cut a corner somewhere in the coding, and the result allowed incomplete downloads to install as completed downloads.

Yep, whiners always complain the loudest. No problems with my 2.40 update, just like no problems with red rings on my Xbox360. Of course now that I have said that, both of them have just burst into flame and my house is burning down. :P

@Roll3r: Its all part of an elaborate scheme, a conspiracy i tell ya. Obviously Microsoft hired people to make up fake forum trolls regarding problems with the update. Then they paid off some sony employees to pull back the update to make it seem more official... idiot.

Haven't encountered any problems so far, and I was up all night playing MGS4.

@xMindPrintsx: yeah, upside-down PS1 trick was hilarious; QFT. But don't bother trying to reason with fanboys. They are empowered by a need to justify their purchase choice. :P

Your PS3 broke? I'm sorry, we'll fix it for (insert price here). Would you like to buy the 8 year old PS2 for, still, $150?

Oops. This sort of thing sucks for those affected, but it is really hard to get 100% success with a system update -- especially one making this many changes. They are doing the right hting to pull it, root cause any issues then re-release. I'm sure Sony will make good for anyone losing data.

@TheIrishNinja:
I had that issue but it only happened once to me. I couldn't tell you the exact game that it happened with but I do remember a freeze and then reboot, only to find my file names and folder titles reset.
And, I've had nothing but smoothness from 2.40 I'm very happy with it. It sounds like trolls who have been able to trick the most thorough of readers here.

Hmm. So what should the people do who dled it last night before they pulled it; but who's systems it hasnt bricked do?
Will they release 2.41 to fix whatever was wrong w/ 2.4. I hope they dont just release it as 2.4 again & make it impossible for people to get the fixed version who already have the busted 2.4.
I'm one of those people. I thought something was screwy, it didnt brick my system but about the only thing that worked was the clock. the in game music feature hasnt worked on ANY of my games. not 1. Just says "this game does not support this feature.". Tried about 10 diff games so far.

@string_theory: what the hell? dude you realize that the games have to be coded to take advantage of the feature, so uh...no...none of your games would work with custom soundtracks...yet.
Also, the ingame messenging works as well as a good number of features in the crossbar while you're in game, as well as the trophies. So what are you talking about none of the features work?
