PS3 BioShock Gets Exclusive DLC
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:00 PM on July 17, 2008
BioShock on PS3 is going to get some exclusive DLC. Get your pissing and moaning out of the way now, if you could. Done? Wonderful. Because you can't really mess with BioShock's story by adding extra levels or bosses, 2K are instead adding some things called "Challenge Rooms", which will be self-contained areas (ie, you access it from the main menu, not in-game) designed to get you using your plasmids to solve puzzles. Can't see how they'll work this in without it standing out like a sore thumb, but then, the market demands PS3 owners have to get something.

@Providence: I'm with you on this one. It's more money-grubbing behavior.
But that begs the question: is this DLC exclusivity for real or just timed exclusivity? If it's the latter, I'll pass on this and just download it for 360.

I play this on PC, so I basically tower over the vast plebian console underling userbase, but that aside, the DLC sounds cool, and congrats to PS3'ers for being able to enjoy that.
Luke, what about this sounds so shitty to you? You seem to maintain a combative stance on what can only be seen as Portal like gameplay additions to an already perfect game.

Sounds good to me, I mean seriously, 360 is getting FFXIII so why can't PS3 get Bioshock with exclusive DLC content and extra stuff?

@gamadaya: They probably thought of it in the exact opposite way, as in, the 360 people already bought it, PS3 gamers are probably pissed we took so long, so we gotta make it up to them somehow. That way everyone's happy, 360 gamers got to play it a long time ago thinking it was exclusive, and PS3 gamers get extra crap. Hurray.
But it's not.

@stryker1800: They're saying it will be completely set aside from the main game itself. It will be a different mode that you go into separately. There is a video at gametrailers that is all stuff that was in the game previously until you get to the last 10 seconds or so and they show a carnival area with a little sister stuck at the top of a ferris wheel. There was a story on another site that explained that specific puzzle scenario.

That said the only thing I'd like to see added, and it could even happen through an update on the 360, are control options for us lefties out there.

Well you can see why they are having exclusive DLC because 2k not only want current PS3 owners to buy the game but they also want the people who already bought Bioshock (on PC or 360) to rebuy Bioshock for PS3 for the 'extra content'. Its a strategy that works.
My thoughts are its screwing the original fans that picked up the game, made it the success that it is today by buying it the first time round. But you know it doesn't really matter as thats what being an early adopter is, plus you've had the game over a year before the other console gets it anyway.

That makes no sense. If they wanted people who own the game on other platforms to buy the PS3 version, shouldn't they add it to the disc itself? By showing that it is external to the disc, that would inhibit some from getting it on the PS3 because they know it can be made available via DLC on the 360 and the PC. this game is kinda over-rated. has a great beginning and a couple great cinematics in-between but all in all I agree with Yahtzee in saying it's nowhere near revolutionary.
Good things about this game--
top notch voice acting
great spooky atmosphere
a couple great cinematics
good, intuitive control scheme
original story
Bad things about this game--
Enemies get repetitive, although cool.
too much of everything -money, vending machines, plasmids, upgrades, etc
claustrophobic levels that make this game feel too linear. Nothing wrong with a linear game but this game feels linear which is bad.

@Providence: I just don't get where the assumption that it is going to be paid for DLC comes from. I'm not saying it definitely will be free, or that it definitely won't be free. As for the timing, anyone who has worked in the industry knows that games are feature locked fairly early in production, so it is easier from a development perspective to polish and release the game and then bolt on DLC than it is to go back an entire development stage and rebuild the game. Everyone seems to have jumped to the conclusion that the DLC will be paid for content, I was merely pointing out that DLC doesn't neccesarily involve payment.
Also, the Conquest Map update for Battlefield: Bad Company was announced (I believe) before the game released, and was at the most a day one announcement, and yes, it is free content.

This game is absolutely awesome and even though this DLC sounds rather lame, who cares!
If you have a PS3 and have not yet played the game - go buy it!

@sargemat: People aren't going to buy this because of some DLC. They're buying it because they didn't have the chance to play it on another platform "the way it's meant to be played". Read: People without 360s or decent PCs but PS3s will be all over this.

If I owned a PS3, I think I'd be annoyed at this (as a 360 owner, it makes me feel less than excited about this company). Considering they had to wait over a year to play this game, there's no reason this content shouldn't be included for free.

It's pretty ironic in a way...
You hear all this stuff about how exclusivity is on its way out with all the multiplatform game releases, but I think if you count add-ons it's actually on the rise.

I am absolutely not a fan of exclusive DLC for any console, save that which is relevant only to one particular brand, like specific characters in Soul Calibur.
The business side of me doubts it will remain a PS3 exclusive forever, though. If they think they can make money releasing it on 360, they will.
And for those saying you deserve exclusive content because you had to wait a year to play it, that's just bunk. You wouldn't be playing it at all had PC and 360 users not purchased so many copies of it, so really, if anyone deserves something it's the people who are responsible for making it a successful enough game to be ported.
But honestly, why not just strive for equality and be happy we can all play and enjoy the same game?

@sargemat:
You can't see people getting it on PS3?
Sorry to break it to you, but a LOT of people don't have a gaming PC and/or a 360.
I guess the 14 million people who own a PS3 should just avoid a great game because it's a year old.
You would fail at marketing my friend.

Are you sure that "DLC" is the correct term? I believe that the content is just included in the game for PS3, but perhaps that is also called DLC nowadays? I don't know.
We'll see in October/November time.

@sargemat: I own the 360 version and I plan on picking up the PS3 version if it solves the annoying texture pop-in and framerate problems the 360 version had. The extra features are also a bonus.

I hope this game is at minimum as good as the 360 version.
If they can add all this new stuff, and eliminate the irritating texture pop-in/pop-out and framerate issues of the 360 version, I am one happy camper!
