PS3 Press Conference Rehearsal Crashed By Mystery Blogger
Shrine auditorium security grabbed an overly eager blogger from his third-floor balcony perch during a recent Sony E3 press conference dress rehearsal, SCEA head Jack Tretton said.
Sony was working their way through a dry run of the upcoming Playstation press conference when someone noticed that what they were saying and doing was showing up on an unnamed site.
"Everything we were saying was getting posted within 15 minutes on the Internet", Tretton said.
So Sony called in security to do a search of the place.
"They found some guy on the third floor balcony laying down taking notes and calling it in to a service", he said.
Sony declined to name the person or the site they are affiliated with. We've contacted the ESA to see if anyone had their E3 press credentials revoked but had not heard back from the organisation as of press time.

@thefais: took the words out of my mouth
he leaked a total yawn-fest
Jabbertrack
@yashichi8bit: You mean one that says "No place for Hideo" on it!!!!!?? Epic win. Wait, was this a dress rehearsal for the one Tuesday? Or some other thing?

@grangerfx:
More than a few people cared about God Of War 3.
EvilMetsFan
@yashichi8bit: @mr_dimsum:
LOL. Both of you. Very clever and very funny.
So Shane Kim should have hid under a cardboard box?!
Andronix
OMG, someone posted their SHAMELESS SELF-ADULATION AND PR on the internet.
Oh, how tragic.
lumpi
Failcrasher is fail.
Frank
Why did Sony care? It's not like they had some be secret announcements to make (or at least none that anyone would care about).
grangerfx
@adinnieken: Its probably true I saw details about the Sony press conference leaked on Neogaf before their press conference and I thought they weren't true until after the press conference even the info about massive action game with details was there.
brandonheat
It was probably Threespeech. Watch them come up with something like: "See? Threespeech is NOT a PlayStation marketing tool. We, like, ARRESTED one of them, and believe me, they're gonna get it!"
boopadoo
@Arex: Er, wait. The Playstation brand also includes the PSP. So is this another conference? *confused*
Arex
Um, the article says "upcoming Playstation press conference." So this means there's going to be another conference on just the PS2/PS3? Sweet!
Arex
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
What trespassing? They are more likely to boot the person from the building than to proceed with legal action.
Especially considering that Sony's E3 presentation really didn't have any considerable news. The 80GB PS3 was long rumored, back in December of last year, the filing information for he was revealed in January. The only thing that wasn't truly expected was the Massive Action Game.
There wasn't anything really exciting during Sony's E3 Spotlight. I kept nodding off during it. The crowd itself seemed like it barely got into it, and with every announcement kept anticipating more.

@GCO_Gamer:
I'm a writer at the site you linked...I can confirm that no one from our site went to E3, so you're crazy... We just started the site 10 days ago. Interested in why you thought it was our site, though...
ArtG
coulndt have been Cresente, those damn shirts would have given him away in seconds lol
Hand_O_Death
Pathetic and yes they should reveal his name and the name of the blog.
Garo
Dont you all know that Folding At Home is really Sonys way of monitoring all the web sites for comments made about the company? Its a conspiracy! They are using our own Ps3s against us! Fight the power!
FrizzleFried
So...
Within a few hours of a rehearsal, some guy was lying down on the 3rd floor. He was calling in to some site that no one here (and I would be willing to say the Kotaku crowd is probably pretty well connected or keeps up other gaming sites/blogs) knows or can pinpoint, BUT Sony just happened to be monitoring that site/blog during their rehearsal and was able to not only call their own people and security to alert them, but to also get them to do a search of the premises and find this guy?
Not saying it didn't happen, but it sounds a little out there to me personally. Brian, I would love for you guys to post a follow on E3 credentials getting revoked and/or the security at that place giving verification. Something doesn't smell right.
Cyanbane
I really think it was this site
[www.endsights.com]
GCO_Gamer
Me thinks he accidentally shook his controller and his Octo-Camo reset and blew his cover.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: lol no shit

Yess, I love that the Gawker Blind Item pic has made its way over to Kotaku

@RickBarrs:
I can't believe you have the nerves to compare some blogger who's looking for traffic to an investigative journalist. They're not the same thing at all. Plus an investigative journalist can investigate something deeply without breaking any laws whatsoever. Did Woodward and Bernstein even do anything illegal? I wasn't around during the Watergate scandal so I don't know. It seems like the information they got was investigated within legal realms.
It's not so black and white and you make it. You act like it's either you're told where to go, or you break into places. Clearly there are ways to investigate things legally. There was no such opportunity here. Ultimately, if this court was brought up in court, that person would be liable for what he did.
LittleBigPlaneteer
@Arsenicberyllium: Ah. Thank you. I was just about to ask whether the site was real or not; it seemed to veer straight into the sunny land of satire, but then I remembered a few comments I've read on this here site...
Unless they were being equally facetious.
Hrm. This matter is troubling. Is it possible that everyone on the internet is completely reasonable, and that all of the more outrageous posts we've seen have been nothing but mere trolling attempts?
JustThisGuy
@LittleBigPlaneteer: I'm sure that the Nixon administration didn't want Woodward and Bernstein to go poking around where they weren't supposed to be either. That is how investigative journalism works. If a reporter only goes where they are supposed to when they are told to go there, they wouldn't be reporters... they would just be propagandists. If you want a story that no one else has, or indeed, that no one wants you to have, you do occasionally have to break someones rules.
RickBarrs
Gotta say, I would have named the person and the website who was doing that crap. Classy not to say who.
Sammo21
@thefais: Burn.
Woodwater
It had to be GameCock
AZRoboto
I bet it was Larry Hryb. I saw him scrambling around on his phone at Sony's Press Event.
Barbara
"Sony was working their way through a dry run of the "- Yeah. Their presentation was dry alright.
OutsideTheBox
@Arsenicberyllium: Thats funny, my PSP doesn't have in game XMB.
Wubbytoes
Interesting. Considering the quick spread of rumor/info on the internet it seems like we would've had some spoilers. I guess they have some pretty beefy web security there, it sounds like they have people snooping people's text input on their network.
RaepGoblin
LoL, I bet the reason the ninja got caught was ultimately he fell asleep as the presentation was so boring....
vidgmr
As the speaker, I would've started making things up just to see the internet implode at the Mario Infinity for PS3 announcement.
drawp
@Wubbytoes: I hate bringing up such and old issue, but Sony was the first one to have in-game XMB, with the PsP.
Arsenicberyllium
@aestheticity: Yeah, hopefully Microsoft doesn't rip off the trophies or that whole in game XMB thing!
Wubbytoes
@deathtastic: Aww...cmon. They're a comedy site. It's really funny when you realize the whole thing is tongue-wagging-out-loud ridiculous,but some of the real fanboys are so absurd that it actually seems plausible.
Arsenicberyllium
Heh, it's the dawn of blogger terrorism.
Kiyosuki
@yashichi8bit:
Okay, you win the thread.

@thefais:
But he's a super cool blogger with street cred now! >_>
GreyFoxV1
Maybe Sony is nubs at technology!!!!! L2P ESPECIALLY WITH PS3
Foreign-Contaminant
Of course there's rehearsals. How could you not have them when everybody in the industry has their eye on you?
DigiMish
@ananag: LOL!
Jun581 won't give you tree fiddy!!
@RickBarrs:
Um, being some place you're not supposed to be, or in other words "breaking in" is more than deserving enough to get your credentials taken away. If an area is prohibited, then has to be a form of punishment for those that ignore that. Whether it's criminal, or legal action.
LittleBigPlaneteer
@deathtastic: LOL it is a crime that you read their reviews.
FP_slomo788
@Arsenicberyllium: never post that site again.... its a crime that people can give lair and haze a 10.
deathtastic
@KaneRobot:
He was careless and got caught. Heh, can't award that.
DigitalHero
Ninja journalist action that is insane. But he missed the one cardinal rules of ninja espionage remain unseen, well that and always have an escape plan.
Konchu
Aw, didn't we know what Sony was going to say for the most part months ago, anyway? :)
And really, they shouldn't have nabbed him, they should have just scooped him false information and let his reputation take the hit.
doubtful
Well you know it wasn't EGM. Christ, they still have a front page article about "Two New GTA Radio Stations Revealed Plus Video!".
Punkateer
He must have been disappointed by the announcements.
sir_carrot
Kutaragi?
tlozwarlock
Why would they take away his press credentials? I understand that this is only "gaming" media, but it is kind of a reporters job to get a scoop. Sometimes sneaking in is part of the job.
RickBarrs
Someone in the Kotaku tower needs to remember to get the intern=Adam out of the slammer
amisenior
Wow thats kinda funny to say the least. Covert operations to take the thunder from their presentation.
Neo-Senku
There's Press Conference Rehearsals? wow. Hope they give the 'crasher' the death penalty.
CancerMan
Rofl that's awesome
Murderdolls
@Heliophage: Yeah, they were patrolling a bunch of websites? It's crazy.
And people say complaining doesn't matter. It worked with Six Axis, it'll work with anything. These companies are easier to influence than you think. They are everywhere.
karasu is my homeboy
@Heliophage:
That's what I was wondering. How did Sony know so quickly? If it was a "popular" site shouldn't someone here know if a certain site leaked info before the presser started? Hmmm
LittleBigPlaneteer
Chris Remo?
Nullzero
Snake!? SNAKE!? SSSNNNNAAAAKKKEEE!
DranzerKire
Snake's new job
ninja blogger
salthegeek
Sorry about that!!
enewtabie
I wonder if he continued to take notes of their reaction to his leaking and of the guards as they carried him away.
Strange, though, how Sony has their eye on the entire internet.
Heliophage
@Billkwando: If he did that, then he would be a true ninja!
Sound's like the unemployed ninja.
Mr.DuckSauce
Random cat says: I'm in your rehearsalz, leaking yur announcementz
BTW, to all the 360 fanboys trolling here: Please screw off

Because waiting a little while for the real thing is just too hard.

@DigitalHero: A medal for being an idiot? Hmmm...
Blasphemy. That man is a national hero.
KaneRobot
aaa so i get why the whole conference was underwhelming an dull. a secret agent man snuck in, told MS what sony got, the altered their show. now all makes sense
ibunkun
Just goes to show even ninjas have blogs now.
They're lucky he didn't drop a smoke bomb and vanish, or worse, slice his way out of there.
Billkwando
@KaneRobot:
Forget medals, give him a Trophy! A platinum one in fact ;)
LittleBigPlaneteer
Patcher! THATS how he does it!
Patient
I love how this article is just an excuse for people to dump on a particular site they hold a grudge against for no reason.
SAGoon987
@thefais: made me spit out my food.

@KaneRobot:
A medal for being an idiot? Hmmm...
DigitalHero
Give that blogger a medal
KaneRobot
@thefais: NICE. They totally wasted their effort. Sony's conference was harsh suck.
udiie
wow i dont get it. so sony had a bunch of people monitoring blog sites DURING their rehearsal? were they EXPECTING a security breach???
good catch though.
diablofreak
Naughty naughty!
SpishackCola
LMAO, but I didn't come across this site so it didn't really help them now did it.
Hysterical, though.
