PSP: 10 Million Sold (In Japan)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on July 15, 2008
While it's enjoyed various ups and downs in the West, in Japan, the PSP has been emerging as something of a colossal hit. Over the first six months of 2008 it's been the best-selling console in Japan, and Sony have now announced that (based on Enterbrain figures), since the unit's launch in Japan in 2004, over ten million PSPs have been sold in the country. To anyone getting visions of a tortoise and a hare, it's OK, you're not alone.
Tokyo, July 15, 2008 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the cumulative sell-in units of PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) handheld entertainment system (PSP-1000 and 2000 series) reached a total of 10 million units(*1) in Japan as of July 15, 2008.
Since the launch on December 12th 2004 in Japan, PSP has evolved as an innovative handheld entertainment system, having a wide array of exciting software titles and by introducing peripherals as well as upgrading system software through continuous firmware updates. Inheriting the basic functions and the design philosophy of PSP-1000, slim and light PSP (PSP-2000) made its debut on September 20th 2007 and in the first half of 2008(*2), it has become the best selling system in the game console market in Japan. Many colour variations have also been introduced, now having PSP available in a total of seven different colours. Features such as "1 Seg" viewing(*3), "Skype", Kotaku press releases and many other fun accessories that expands the joy of entertainment on PSP, including "Microphone" and a multi-functional "Cradle" in addition to a strong line-up of attractive software titles are also accelerating the expansion of the platform.
On the games front, there are over 580 (*4) titles now available in Japan alone. More and more exciting new software titles of different genres are scheduled for release towards the end of year from third party licensees as well as from SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS) Japan Studio, including GUNDAM BATTLE UNIVERSE by NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc., The Legend of Heroes: SORA NO KISEKI the 3rd by Nihon Falcom Corporation and PHANTASY STAR PORTABLE by SEGA CORPORATION as well as SCE WWS Japan Studio titles including BLEACH Soul Carnival, LocoRoco2, PATAPON2(Working Title), SECRET AGENT CLANK and Yusyanokuseni Namaikidaor2.(*5) In conjunction with the powerful line-up of upcoming software titles, two new bundle packs, "PSP Metallic Blue Value Pack" and "PSP Metallic Blue 1 Seg Pack", featuring a new "Metallic Blue" PSP bundled with popular accessories and peripherals, will become available on July 17th in Japan as a limited offer.
SCE will vigorously promote PSP as a new handheld entertainment system to enjoy a variety of digital entertainment content by enhancing network capabilities and interoperability with PLAYSTATION®3.

Awesome, I've been leaning towards buying a PSP for quite some time and I'll admit atleast half of my reasons aren't even to do with gaming. Though being able to play Bionic Commando Rearmed from a toilet at work via remote play will be a nice bonus. Here's hoping more developers utilize this feature.
@incredibilistic: "Good for Sony. They need some good news after losing FFXIII."
Jesus "fucking" Christ (and I don't even believe), would people stop saying that. Sony did not 'loose' Final Fantasy 13. Last time I checked it's still being developed for PS3 (then ported to 360), PS3 owners will still get to play it and they won't be missing out on any content. People need to stop spewing out of context crap.
You obviously missed Sony's year long commentation on 3rd party exclusives or you'd be under the impression they more than likely let exclusivity on Final Fantasy 13 go. I'll break it down for you though. Sony is trying to walk the Nintendo path by heavily investing into company controlled IP's and assets, first party titles, rather than throwing billions of dollars at third party publishers for the right of exclusivity of a product they really have no control over.
As Nintendo found out when the original Playstation hit the market, publishers don't have loyalty and many abandoned Nintendo (for a variety of reasons) and Sega for Sony. Much like many 3rd parties today have given preference to Microsoft. There is nothing stopping any publisher from doing the same to Microsoft in the years to come. To use a choice quote from Battlestar Galactica, "all this has happened before and it will happen again".
The only people this announcement really affects are those who only plannned to purchase a PS3 for a handful of games, FF13 included. Which I'm willing to wager (nothing) is not the hugely bloated number many think it is.

@Black-Dog-Howls: FF is big in the West--very big. There's no getting around it, really. In Japan, the main franchise is DQ, and where is that headed? Nintendo. So you could say, both Sony and Microsoft are already losers.

@Burgin: Yeah i must agree Crisis Core was a pretty underwhelming game mainly due to the battle system add to that all of squares recent games, which is why i think its not that big a deal for it to be exclusive on any system.

I am also hoping Sony shows some killer psp titles tmrw.

@Black-Dog-Howls: E'zactly. As you say, the FF13 announcement was more 'WTF?!' then actual 'pwnage' Sony is still getting the game and that was truly the only thing 'major' announced by Microsoft. Sony and Nintendo can both easily trump what Microsoft has put out, especially if Team Ico shows some new content and even showing things that we all pretty much expect can out do what Microsoft had shown (God of War 3, Twisted Mtal, etc.).
Please dear god let Twisted Metal show up in one form or another, Jaffe, don't let me down!

@KaneTaker: Also check out Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions and Jeane d'Arc if you're into strat. RPG's at all. Also some other solid games, but w/o the huge marketing budgets are Wipeout Pulse, the MGS Portable Ops series, Tekken: Dark Resurrection and SFA3, and Lumines.
The one thing they need more of are the quirky adventure titles the DS is reknown for, a la Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright, and Trauma Center. I bet a few of those would boost those PSP numbers to 15+ million.

@rljohn: Was just using the FFVII thing as an example.
Anyways, as far as pressers are concerned, we barely learned anything from Microsoft that we don't already know, haven't seen, or haven't been savvy to at all. It was the same shindig as 2007 E3.

I thought M$'s press conference was spot on. Great core games for the hard core (gears, fallout, fable, banjo), casual games (avatars, lips, guitar hero, rock band), and REALLY nailing the media with full HDD installs, Netflix and Universal, etc)...
Saving Bungie's announcement for Wednesday too, i think M$ is having a great e3.

It's like E3 is over in the first inning because one guy scored a home run.

@incredibilistic: I'm breaking my silence.
Honestly, the FFXIII announce isn't that big of a deal. Everyone knew it was coming the moment Square announced Crystal Tools was now multiplat. We aren't getting the game until sometime between 2010 and 2012 and by then no one will care anymore. Only Japan will enjoy it, and Japan is where FF sells the most - and in Japan it's still PS3 exclusive since they're finishing development, putting it out in Japan, then doing a 360 version with the US localization.
The Microsoft presser was boring and lackluster aside from that, "wtf?!" moment.
There are many things Nintendo and Sony can do to trump that one announcement which was halfhearted at best and blown up by the internet. An exclusive Rockstar project, more from StudioJapan, another new IP from Nintendo, Team Ico 3, etc. etc. can all be 'bigger' news than FFXIII doing something we already expected.

Other than that, you have games like LocoRoco and Patapon, to games like Crisis Core and Monster Hunter.
There's plenty of good shit. The only thing is that the system is seriously lacking in some good RPGs. Crisis Core was hardly an RPG, and everything else is either a remake or a spin-off of something else

@majatt: As one of my teachers in HS once said, 99% of the world are idiots, make sure you make it to the 1% who are not.
People believe that you get magic dominance from brand recognition, you don't. The PSP is a product that took long to find its footing, I know people who bought it as a portable movie player or even walkman replacement that could also play games. Nintendo was smart in making a cheap gaming only handheld (See a pattern there) that had heavy leanings towards the casual gaming market... however, how many people are willing to carry around a phone, MP3 player, portable movie player and game console?
I hate to admit it but Apple had it right with the iPhone, it's not a device that will replace every gadget you carry but it can replace two of the most used (Phone/MP3) and one of the bulkiest (Portable Movie Player). That's the territory Sony aimed for (Sans the phone) and that's a market that takes a long time to develop.
Eventually Nintendo will follow suit, maybe not the next redesign but the one after, and add media playing capabilities to the DS range simply because the market will ask for it.

I said it when they were the underdog, and I'll say it again just to be consistent - you don't have to be no. 1 to be a successful system. Even under the DS' thumb it was making a decent cut for Sony.
I love it though, so this time is great for me. If they could get all the Dreamcast essentials ported to it, it could be the best system ever IMO. (lesse... Crazy Taxi. Sakura Taisen (SS), maybe we can get Jet Set Radio and Space Channel 5 some day?)
