Real, Honest-To-God Mercenaries 2 Gameplay Footage
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:00 AM on July 5, 2008
Have we seen any of this kind of footage? I can't remember any. This is raw, somebody's-on-the-other-end-of-a-controller video of Mercenaries 2 in action, with lead designer Scott Warner taking the wheel to show how the game's objectives can be completed differently using the three available mercenaries. And by "objectives completed" they mean "make everything around you explode".

@wild homes is weathering cephalopod trouble!: I would think that there would probably be other missions with more depth, but I think that particular one was used for the demo because it shows off the variety within the game and the 'shootiness' of it.

@Astrofox: Yea their pretty dull compared to say RE4 which did them just right IMO. Although that grappling hook seems like fun. They should make it like Tenchu use that badboy to get on top of buildings. Overall it seems like a decent game. I wouldn't shell out 60 bucks for it though.

@gipmah: if it's anything at all like mercenaries, which it seems to be, yes.
Every building in Mercenaries was destructible if you hit it with enough explosives. I think maybe the HQs where you get missions are not, but everything around them is.

Yay! That looks to be quite a bit more fun than the previous game. Does seem it could get a bit tiresome, though-- I hope there's more depth to the game than this video would suggest, because simply blowing everything up over and over again would get kind of old really quickly.

If this is anything like Mercenaries 1, then it's a tiny, tiny portion of the game. Probably one of the early-mid missions. In Mercs 1 you had to storm a fortress that was crawling with AA towers, tanks, and helicopters. You had to get all the way to the inside and capture a person, which isn't exactly easy work.

I think specializing the charactes traits is one thing that'll make this better than Mercs 2. However, I'm a little nervous that they haven't posted anything like bullet points to show off exactly how they're different. I mean, whose to say that you couldn't pull off the same things regardless of you are?
I just want it to feel more tactical then the last. Looks like they're trying for that this time around.

@sarcasmOD: I expect you're right. I'm just always wary of titles like this, because usually they're not very diverse in execution of concept. And that's fine, I just very much prefer to know it in advance, so I can simply rent them-- where they can be a great value in terms of expense over enjoyment. Like Crackdown.

Reminds me of playing with G.I. Joes when I was a kid- this is what we pretended we were doing, with little bases made from shoe boxes spread out throughout the house, tearing around the house with jeeps and jets and stuff, pulling off the little missiles and making our own sound effects...
Do kids do that type of stuff anymore, or is it all just videogames now?

Ah, I was mistaken.
Still, Mercenaries is probably my favourite sandbox game. When they say no rules, they literally mean it. Provided you have access to the resources, you can achieve a mission absolutely any way you want to. You can jack a helicopter, snipe the main dude you're supposed to kill from a building across from him then call in a laser guided surgical strike to blow the living hell out of all his guards.

Mercenaries was pretty cartoony. The vehicle physics were hilarious. Hitting into a rock would flip your vehicle about 360 degrees but you'd mostly, miraculously, land on your wheels and you'd be able to keep driving as if nothing had happened.
Even if they just make a prettier version of mercenaries the game will still be great

@nou_phabmixay: This game is pretty open and that coupled with destructible buildings might be the reason why the graphics aren't that great, as it may be too intensive for consoles to handle. If you noticed in Oblivion or Crackdown, while the view distance was pretty far, details and textures were also sparse as the view got further.
Too Human, however, does not get the same excuse. It seems to be a linear game, which confines the area and can allow for more graphical content.

I'm usually pretty ticked about the use of quick-time events, but for some reason I'm not too mad about these ones. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you can predict when they show up, and they make stealing vehicles more risky then simply going up to a tank and pressing X

Has anyone played the Iron Man game? This UI and gameplay look almost identical. You know, except for the obvious one-man-flies vs people-running difference. Once I saw the QTE, I was convinced that they're using the same engine. That's not to say it's a bad thing (it looks fantastic) but I hope they don't fall into the same trappings that IM did -- repetitive gameplay, dumb AI, faux destructible environments, etc..

@Drake Lake: Formed from Arsenic and Old Lace: At first I thought that big blue "X" sure brings out the hate in people these days to the point that one poor soul couldn't hold back and compared it to an unrelated "Too Human" game. Stepping back from it all and taking in the reactions from Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Halo Wars, etc... it's just becoming more and more obvious that new blood is needed in the consumer section of the gaming industry. Listening to all this bitching, acting out, and the strange sense of one-ups-man-ship to see who can diss or berate a game the worst based on as little knowledge as possible leads me to believe that (not all) many of the "core" gamers out there are bitter and hateful people who have become so jaded over time that things like graphics and animation that contribute so little to the sense of play are touted as the most important feature.
Don't get me wrong here: I think all games should be able to put their best foot forward if they expect me to spend my $60 bucks (after all I worked really hard for it) and presentation is a large part of this but the shit in the pool of gamers that making to pool stagnant and dingy that's making it hard to see the fun in games and most of this can be attributed to unwarranted venom and their influence on weak-willed individuals.
I for one hope that what Nintendo is doing isn't a fad and that Sony's and Microsoft's effort to "casualalize" the space game spaces will be a successful one because WE need new blood! There are to many in the current crowd that are dead inside. Ultimately, everyone is entitled to their own opinions; this rant is just my own personal opinion of them.

To all the people who are being turned off by the QTE's, Mercs has a good reason to do this. If you played the first game, you'd know how broken vehicle hijacking was. All you had to do was kill any outside gunners, run right up to the vehicle, and you were granted access right away. It nullified a lot of the challenge of dealing with vehicles.
