Realtime Worlds Expects M Rating For APB
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 12:40 PM on July 26, 2008
After Realtime Worlds' appetite-whetting unveiling of its upcoming cops-n'-jerkbags MMO APB (All Points Bulletin), it'd be a little disappointing if it turned out that all we were being promised was sanitised "comic mischief". But no — Realtime Worlds fully expects to earn its M rating.
Realtime Worlds president Tony Harman (who recently told us why we didn't see APB at E3) had a chat with Gamespot:
Realtime Worlds president Tony Harmon told GameSpot today that he's expecting his modern-day cops-and-robbers game APB to land an M from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Though the game has no release date yet, the developer is planning to submit it to the ratings process next year.
The concept art in this post is cool, huh? Move over, six-fingered Lollipop Girl?

Unless the guns are supposed to fire lolly pops and sunshine I would expect a M rating too.

@Ruisu: Why is it I always get the feeling of Hyung Tae Kim when I see the concept art? I don't know, but I try to hold interest in APB which sounds awesome but I can't help but be reminded it was developed in Korea to start with and we all know the plethora of cheap Korean MMOs...
But I doubt it'll end up resembling anything that bland.

WHY is it that I always got the feeling of Gunz when I see pictures of this game.

Is this a clever ploy to spark interest in the game? Does the developer think that upon hearing of their game's inclusion of violence worthy of an M rating, the droves of blood-lusting gamers throughout the world would drop their copies of GTAIV and flock to APB?

Cops and criminals fighting it out with full-on gun violence and vehicular assault? M rating you say?
Captain Obvious has his work cut out these days.

I'm all about this game and Left 4 Dead, of course I'm sure this game won't come out for years also :(

@AlbenoEpiX: I don't know about anyone else but i've already dropped my copy of GTA IV, and it didn't take a game annoucement to do it, Rockstar did that for me. @Absent Blue: I think you're thinking of an entirely different game, this is being developed by a scottish developer and was just announced this year/last year.

All I want to know, is when is the public beta for this game that they mention a few weeks back.

@Absent Blue: It wasn't developed in Korea, it was developed in conjunction with Webzen, a big Korean MMO publisher. Realtime Worlds bought the rights to the game back from them this year for a huge sum of money, and now wholly own it themselves. RTW were always developing it, they were just getting assistance from an MMO company who run games with subscriber numbers that Blizzard can't even imagine.

@Absent Blue: As Kazzah says, it's not developed in korea. It is infact developed in... ~drum roll~ SCOTLAND!!! =D

They should leave it at that, then rather over emphasizing it like AoC for marketing and becoming an absolute dud when it comes to gore and the content.

Honestly I really hope this game comes out. Microsoft has a bad reputation with MMORPGs on their console. They always make a big fuss and show some great MMORPG and it becomes vaporware. Remember True Fantasy Online?

I love that image. Completely destroys any reasonable expectations about the game's tone.

Of course this beats six-fingered lollipop girl. GTA concept art got old circa Vice City and it hasn't changed since. Not only is this good, but I know why. It reminds me of cyberpunk/Shadowrun (PnP) art and that art is awesome.
@Pornosaur: Seconded. Like beacons of hope for me. If Left 4 Dead isn't actually coming this November I'm going to strangle a puppy.

Uh, actually it's being developed by Realtime Worlds entirely. It was supposed to be their flagship title. It uses the same engine as their other game Crackdown. Unreal Engine 3.
It was going to be published by a Korean company but they ditched them. Thus this game won't have any resemblance of those bland Korean MMO's. It will be like GTA( The original creator is the founder of Realtime Worlds)with graphics like Crackdown probably better with MMO gameplay. I can't wait for this game.
