Red Faction: Guerrilla Rhino Packs, Destruction and 360 Avatars
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on July 23, 2008
I know the video game industry seems to be perpetually going through a shooter glut. And, yes, I love shooters, so I tend to put up with it. So bear that in mind as I proceed to fawn over Volition's upcoming Red Faction sequel, Red Faction: Guerrilla.
The game will be set on a terraformed Mars, 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction game. Now the Earth Defence Force folks are in control and have turned bad. Players will take on the roll of a man caught up in the struggle against the EDF. The game will play out in third-person perspective and the entire world will be destructible.
You can, I was told, bring down an entire three-story building piece by piece. The multi-platform game's open world will also allow you to steal vehicles, swipe weapons even recruit other people to join your band of guerrillas.
While I didn't have a chance to play around with the single player campaign, Volition did give me time, lots and lots of time, to play matches of multiplayer.
Chief among the things that Guerrilla adds to the Red Faction franchise is the fully destructible environment. This time around players get both weapons and special power backpacks as they shoot it out with each other. These packs give players different abilities they can use as they rampage through the stark Martian landscape. Some packs let you thruster hop around the map, other's give you a temporary shield or the ability to charge things and inflict massive amounts of melee damage. That last one, a Rhino Pack, was by far my favourite one to use, allowing me to charge right through a building's wall and take down people camped out inside... with a sledgehammer. That's right, you can run around smashing people with a two-handed sledgehammer. Great fun!
The game will feature five to six modes total including anarchy, team anarchy, capture the flag, bagman and siege. In that last mode, one team tries to defend a structure while the other team tries to dismantle it. In all of the modes teams can repair damaged buildings with a rifle that shoots out what appears to be a cross between flames and plasma.
From what I played through, it looks like the physics are pretty dead on. For instance, you can take out a few stabilizing beams on a very tall building and then watch the whole thing slowly buckle and eventually cave in on itself. Volition told me that the stress system in the game calculates by the second where the stress in a building is and how it should crumble depending on the weight. As buildings topple, debris showers down around you. Nice touch.
The game will support 20 to 25 multiplayer maps, all unique to multiplayer and Volition is toying around with the idea of allowing a third, unnamed, force to be unlockable for multiplayer. Unfortunately, the game won't support co-op multiplayer.
Finally, Volition said that Microsoft came to them back in May or so to talk to them about someone using the Xbox 360's recently unveiled avatar system.
"We are talking with Microsoft about their Mii thing, about maybe allowing you to link up with each other in that and then go into the game".

I LoL'ed... but WTF is all this "Microsoft copied Mii's! OMFGBBQ!" stuff coming from? Yes Nintendo came out with avatars first in the video game console arena. But did Nintendo invent avatars? I don't think they did. If anything I guess we could say Nintendo copied the Wii (Minus the wii-mote) off of Microsoft's first xbox. They did a pretty good job of mirroring the specs... except it can't play movies, or run in 720p. And Nintendo copied Atari when they used a cartridge to hold video-game data for the NES! OMFG! What all of it boils down to is the target consumer. Nintendo wanted to go for the 10 yr olds and under and the over 60 crowd (apparently cause they wont be around long enough to bitch about shovel-ware). Microsoft/Sony wanted some of that pie too since they have the ultra-hardcore segment sewed up. It's a give and take industry. Nintendo has given... it has also taken. NO console or software is 100% original... deal with it.

I am more excited for this than anything else. RF1 was great, and this will just be the same, but greater.
I can see it now, just walking up to a building a sniper is camping on, casually placing some c4 on the support, and watching him fall down in the rubble as he lines up his shot on me. Or setting up traps so tanks get piled under rubble or fall down some massive crater.

They totally failed with Red Faction II (at least the embarrassing PC port and the fact that it had less physical destruction stuff than RF1). But this looks great!
Also lol at "the Microsoft Mii thing". lol.

@Puhgete: That's it's not a huge change from what usually happens. It's a little cool I guess, but I already explained how it's barely different. I want them to do really awesome and new things with the avatars to justify why they completely copied Miis. If we're just going to see stuff like this, then it shows it wasn't really necessary and that no one can really think of great ways to use them.
That's how I see it atleast.

I'm wondering what the speed of this game is. Is it more like Lost Planet and Gears, or is it like Counter-Strike or Day of Defeat?

@karasu is my homeboy:
It sounds like what Home is promising, except on a smaller scale, a la ones own console instead of some huge virtual nieghborhood. It's a better way to guarantee you meet up with your friends, and faster than each of you loading and then jumping into a in-game party. It's better than the alternative, so I give it a thumbs_up.jpeg

@gothamdarkknight: The quote doesn't exactly say "Miis to map battle." It sounds like creating a party, just with your Miis first. So, instead of going into game then making party, it's make party and go into game. Which sounds meh.

@yuoma:
I'll look into that. Thanks for the tip.
@gothamdarkknight:
Forgive me for not representing the entire quote accurately. But he did, in fact, say 'We are talking with Microsoft about their Mii thing', which is all I was commenting on even though I did not feel like writing the whole thing out. I won't make that mistake again.
I think the idea of going from Dashboard to Game is great, w00t for good ideas, but I was only trying to point out the fact that Volitions referred to Microsoft's avatar system is 'their Mii thing'. Funny, that's all.

Hahahaha. Like everyone else has said, awesome quote.
I'm really happy to hear favorable impressions about this one - I've been really fond of this series' past iterations.
I was hesitant about the change to third person and the bland color scheme of the environments (though Mars isn't the most lushly diverse planet to work with), but I think it might transcend all that.
Looking forward to seeing more on this.

It's worth checking out the G4 video of the game (hope it's not a faux pas to post the link)
While most games have physics simulators for cloth, particle, rag doll, etc. effects, this game seems to have a genuine, real-time, structural/civil engineering simulator built-in.
And "Mii thing" made me laugh out loud. See Kinsley Gaffe in Wikipedia.

From what I have been hearing recently out of GameFest, the THQ rep may have made a mistake about Microsoft's intentions. I don't think they (Microsoft) intended for the "Mii thing" to be used in this game, but spoke with Volition about the 360's new LIVE Party being integrated in the game instead.
LIVE Party Detailed: How it Applies to Multiplayer Games
Think about about it. The look of Avatars hardly fits in with a game like Red Faction (unless there is something concerning Avatars that Microsoft has not told the public yet), but there is a lot of things a 3rd party can do to make LIVE Party work more seamlessly with their multiplayer games; or according to the article, even over single player games.
Microsoft wants as many 3rd parties to support added features of LIVE Party as possible, and would have approached any 3rd party expecting a game release in Q3 and Q4 to insure their games would be LIVE Party aware when they launched this fall.
I think where the Volition rep got confused, is that Microsoft likely unveiled LIVE Party and the Avatars to Volition simultaneously - hence the comment about the "Mii thing". However, if we are lucky, the programmers at Volition understood there was a difference and will ensure that full LIVE Party support is implemented in-game when Red Faction releases this fall . . . for that matter, in Saints Row 2 as well, as it goes without saying, that once you understand the possibilities of what you can do with LIVE Party, support for it in most games, especially games aimed at gaming enthusiasts, makes a lot more sense than support for Avatars.
