Relax, Codemasters' F1 Game Is A Sim
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on July 8, 2008
Despite the fact the last few Sony F1 games were fairly forgettable, some people are worried now that Codemasters hold the Formula 1 licence. Worried they'll make a forgettable game. Worried that, being Codemasters - the team behind Grid and Dirt - their F1 game will be some kind of arcade racer. Well it won't! Responding to such fears on the official boards, the official response from Codies is:
GRID and DiRT are aimed at an arcade audience and they do that very well. F1 has different requirements and will get a completely different treatment from our in-house team, including full on sim options, physics, rules and regs etc. We will also have arcade requirements catered for as well. How this will be split we do not know yet, but split it will be.
No word on whether they'll also include team spying and nazi sex dungeons, but we can only hope.

While slightly reassuring, I'm going to wait till release before getting excited. I like my 'sims' to actually simulate, not emulate poorly. But then I play them because I relish the challenge of trying to drive them, not to win the races.
Also if it were to have mode with proper simulation of F1, the number of potential players of that mode would be tiny, considering just how stupidly hard a F1 car would be to drive (especially now with the exclusion of traction control and the like).
But IMO there is one thing that this game MUST have, and that is Qualifying. Not only because it is an integral part of F1, but I am sick to death of racing games that increase difficulty just by placing you at the back of a packed grid, while placing faster drivers at the front (GRiD is currently driving me nuts by doing this)

i hope the cars behave properly, especially in the rain. i would just like to have a good f1 game for once (with the awesome next-gen graphics).

I HAVE JUST MADE SOME SEX WEEE!
This is the news i have been waiting, for, codemasters to do an F1 game is good enough, but to make it a sim is just perfection!

I've got high hopes for this. They can cater for both full sim and arcade sim fans by allowing configurable options:
- Automatic Tyre Selection on/off
- Tyre Wear on/off
- Fuel Consumption on/off
- Damage on/off
- Qualifying optional
- Race rules optional (flags, cutting corners etc etc)
One other option I would like is give every car on the grid the exact same spec to level the playing field.

If they did an F1 game in the spirit of GRID, then it would be an insta-buy for me.
Simulation? Not so much.

Cool. Went to Silverstone weekend just gone. And i hope they get it dead on. Like when it is wet having the choice of tyres. They can cater for others with the options to have them on/off. Can't wait to get my F1 fix again.

I hope Codemasters listen to F1 gamers. Some things we've been asking for for ages include the ability to race on tracks, in cars and as drivers from yesteryear instead of just the current season. How about a "history of F1" game?

As an F1 fan, I'm eager to see what they'll do. I would like to see them adopt one feature from GRID, though. I think it would be a lot of fun to create your own team, design a livery, and select sponsors and a team mate.

two words: safety car. If they have the safety car as a togglable setting, then I know it will be a sim. Yes, some people would actually like to follow the safety car for two laps. That can actually blow someone's fuel strategy and force an unexpected pit. F1CE is an awesome, awesome, almost sim. Lets hope Codies goes all out. Online, server based leagues and seasons wouldbe noe as well.

i'd also like the option of a career mode like Toca Race Driver did, I also like the sponsor system in GRID. I hope they can include the strategy aspect too and real safety cars , flags and penalties etc

I agree that the two can co-exist if implemented properly. An F1 game at its core MUST be a sim. However, through the reduction or introduction of driver aids, they can cater to more arcade audience too. I am really enjoying GRID, but I don't wanna play GRID when I'm in my F1 mode. Being a huge fan of F1 this inaugural game will sink or swim the franchise for CM, but I believe they have it in them to succeed.
That said a Nazi sex dungeon couldn't hurt :)

That has actually put my mind at ease. I was genuinely worried that Codemasters would make the next F1 game an arcade racer instead of a Sim.

If spying... check, nazi sex scandals.... check and pit babes....check, I will have to get this. Driving bits will be welcome but largely optional in this scenario.

So when will the F1 wheel peripheral hit the scene with the game? It seems that is where the industry is expanding with peripherals.

Good news. I wasn't really sure if it was going to be a good idea that CodeM makes a F1 game, but if they say that it's going to be a Sim, lets trust in them. I was waiting a long time for a decent F1 sim. But well, I'm sure that it's going to be better than the ones who Sony did, because they sucked really hard.

GRID was awesome. Really fun game. Can't wait to see Codemaster's take on a F1 sim. And I would love the safetycar too, fuel consuming strategies and stuff. Also having the ability to play as the driver's from the 80s and 70s would be awesome. :)

Cool! Maybe now F1 cars can be given that ultra-realistic central pivot point like other racing series have been blessed with! I hate it when my real car uses its tires to turn, cornering is just more fun when the whole car rotates around an invisible pole that's sticking through the roof. /sarcasm
I was looking forward to Dirt, but I got central pivot physics. I was looking forward to Grid, but I got central pivot physics. I'm not going to be fooled again. Sigh.

Completely agreed with Rhawb. Dirt was cool for a little while but the road racing was just too turn-on-a-central-axisy. Very very disappointing, considering I thought it looked amazing and the damage was really cool. I just couldn't get past the faux physics.

i hope to god that if they use the same engine as grid they will let you have control of how much bloom effect is used. it was severly overused in GRID.

I don't know how long I've been waiting for a good F1 game. I remember enjoying one in the late 90s I think, and every one I've played since has been a disappointment.

NEON/EGO engine = 30FPS
With the half-speed ball started by Studio Liverpool's first effort, it seems we won't see an F1 game at a proper frame rate this generation, unless that game EA have in the pipeline turns out alright.
I seem to recall Lewis Hamilton did a deal with EA, so I wonder if he'll be on the roster, or if his likeness and name will be excluded? I seem to recall F1 games of old having some heavy hitters missing from the line-up due to contractual conflicts.

I would like to scoff at this, if I may. *scoff*
If Grid is "arcadey", then so is PGR. The physics (turning, most specifically) was brutal and unforgiving in that game. I went to Grid expecting a Need for Speed-like game and was very disappointed.
I'm scared of whatever Codemasters would call a true sim.

@Swift_: PGR is arcadey...that's the point/beauty of it. It's always been an arcadey racer. Grid is a little less arcade than the usual game that gets 'arcade' chucked at it but not much. I still think they're awesome, I nearly always prefer my racers that way. But I want a brilliant F1 game..

I also agree with Rhawb. I liked Dirt but it also was able to hide the "pivot" thing a little. Once I played the demo of Grid I decided not to get it. The driving models just don't work quite right.
Best rally game ever made in history...still Rallisport Challenge 2. That's the model I wish they would follow. I feel that was the absolute perfect way to do it. Also makes me wish Turn 10 would try to give rally a shot.
I went off there a little but most of you probably agree with me somewhat right?! :)
I just want a real sim F-1 game too and Codemasters can pull it off if they stay away from those old habits, tangents aside.

Just look at Moto GP 06/07 for how you can make a sim and arcade racer in one package flawlessly.
That's how I would try to attempt it! You just have to go into it knowing that you'll create two seperate games in one. Make the tracks fit the different kinds of vehicles, not forcing the different vehicles to fit the same tracks.

@Godzilla-Sushi:
Being as how an F1 game would use real-world tracks from the actual championship, I don't see how they could make different tracks to suit both arcade and sim styles.
As for not liking the GRID demo, I would suggest trying the retail version. It actually felt quite a bit different, especially when you got to try some other cars.

Godzilla-Sushi

Well, they would use wider tracks and more elevation changes for the arcade style. Moto GP was my best example because it does use real world tracks for the season mode but it also has extreme mode with subtle tweaks to that driving model. It's a faster style. They could easily make arcade style tracks that just flowed better and weren't as technical. If any of that makes sense. Build it so that you can use the break, but you won't have to very often. Lots of esses and wide bends.
As for Grid, if they didn't sell me on the demo they won't sell me at all. It featured all three racing styles in the game and I spent a good amount of time with each to be sure it wasn't for me. You might not have seen my gamertag but I've played virtually every racing game on the 360 and I know what I want from one. Trust me :)

@Godzilla-Sushi:
I still think you should give GRID more of a chance. The two cars they had in the demo were about the worst two in the game (in my opinion), and the handling seemed to get a lot of tweaking from the demo, which basically felt just like Dirt. I've played just about every racing game under the sun, too, and I enjoyed GRID a lot.

Codemasters proved that they can make it fun, But we dont know if they can make it "seriously" fun.
I hope they change the graphics engine. GRID and DIRT has good and shiny graphics, but I think an F1 game should have more realistic graphics like Grand Tourismo 5
