Resident Evil 5's got to be one of the highlights of the show so far. It's been around for ages, I know, but it showed up at E3 this year ready to really show itself off, and as such has gone from "oh, this is barely concept art" to "oh, it's a game that you can play, and looks brilliant".

I'm not even that excited about this game. Nowhere near RE4 levels anyway.

I have no idea why, but the use of the word "Bonanza" caused me to laugh out loud. Usually I don't even laugh inwardly at such things, but this one just got me some how...

I think the reason I am not as excited is that I had my fill of the action RE with RE4. I think it would be nice for RE to go back to it's survival horror roots while keeping the new aiming system and realtime environments. That would make me a happy camper.

@gamadaya: Glitch in the matrix. ;)
The more I see this game the more impressed I become. The animations, graphics, and overall art style are nothing short of brilliant. It's amazing to me that the classic "survival horror," (which is what RE is, as a series, at its core) can go from dingy castles and old machines to brightly-lit, outdoor enviroments and still retain the "holyshittherearezombieschasingmeshitshitshit" intensity that the game is famous for.
In the past this may have been accomplished by surprised factor (dogs jumping through windows, the sudden appearance of crimson heads) but now its pure intensity, pure adrenaline the whole way through.
I love it.

Even if it's a better looking RE4 starring Chris essentially, I'm still looking forward to it. RE4 was meant to start a new trend so naturally from here its going to take cues, and RE4 was one of the funnest games I've played in years so if it has that same fun factor in tact I'm good for it. It's a bit too early in this new RE styles' life to start complaining about the same thing for me. (though the falling animations for the um, infected, could at least have been changed. lol)
I'm very curious to see how the online co-op works. That could be interesting. Perhaps if the two characters get separated for periods of time rather than be kept together through the whole thing, like they have separate paths a la Leon and Claire, but online allows those two paths to intersect at times.
Could be cool for a Mercenaries mini game too.

@stryker1800: and @gamadaya I guess I feel you in a way. I really think the series took a huge step forward with RE4 though compared at least to 3:Nemesis, I liked code Veronica but was meh on Zero mission. Never tried the online co-op outbreak stuff. Hell I have a RE:director's cut sitting right here with the $49.99 price tag glued to the jewel case. I think from the screens I've seen so far this looks like as good of a jump from RE:1 to RE:2 compared with RE:4. If you get that sentence you know what I mean.

although i love the new gameplay system, i do miss the old system because i felt the fixed camera angles kind of added to the suspense. you just didnt know what was in that one corner you couldnt see until you moved close enough to it, i admit it made boss battles difficult at times. now on the subject of the enemies i also miss the slow lumbering zombies...who doesnt love slow lumbering zombies but the new enemies do fit the new game style more. the free cameras and such would, from my point of view make the zombies a little less intimidating where as when they are running at you from all angles and there is a dude with a giant hammer right behind them it brings that intensity that you felt when not know whats just off screen in the old games.

There are NO ZOMBIES in RE5. It is not a game about the undead, but rather about whole villages of people infected by a mysterious virus that makes them mindless killers. The actual gameplay footage shown at E3 on G4TV today showed how the two major characters act in co-op mode, with each depending on the other at various times in the game.
Zombies or not, it has to be a LOT better than Dead Rising for the Wii!

I don't get it, why don't you see this kind of shitstorm when white guys are blowing arabs' heads off in COD4/ever other modern combat game, or when they shoot latinos in RE4?
This whole affair, to me, shows how ignorant we still are about race issues. This is the figurative killing of the fly with the sledgehammer, and it's about time humanity stopped letting its racial panties crawl up into its proverbial chode before chafing occurs.

Remember the first time that chainsaw-wielding sumbitch tore your head off in RE4 and you had to gingerly set down the controller and back away because that shit was just too intense? All of RE5 (or all of the demo build, anyway) is like that. Absolutely gorgeous and nightmarishly visceral.
Between RE5 and SF4 Capcom's just about stealing the show.

@gamadaya: Fair enough. RE5 is definitely about gore, but it's a lot more than that to me. Something like teeth-grinding anxiety. Like, do I really want to push through to that next area because I know an army of virus-infested pseudo-zombies are ready to descend upon me, wielding god knows what scraped-together instruments of destruction? Granted, it's not quite the creeping dread that the early REs on PS1 offered, which I quite enjoyed. I think that sensation is handled quite nicely by games like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame (barring SH4, which was arse, more or less).

This game, if it's anything close to RE4, is going to be pure AWESOME.
People complaining it's not going to be good because it uses the same gameplay mechanics than RE4 are totally off the bat. The gameplay mechanic was good in RE4. Tons of videogames uses similar gameplay now. Honestly, I wouldn't want it to change too much. I want a new story with new settings . A sequel. Not an entirely new game on which you could add a different title.

These look great and make me interested in the game even though I'm not a fan of survival horror. RE4 was pretty good but not great. This looks along the same lines and has my interest perked just a bit. I wonder if the female character is going to be playable?
On another note regarding the screen shots... Anyone else notice that just about every single one of them either features on the female partner who is supposed to be racially/ethnically from that region? I say this because I remember the literal shit storm of people calling the game racist before when it was a white man centered in the imagery. Looks like Capcom is taking pains to make absolutely sure that people see the female character in all the publicity for the game to prevent a repeat of the previous mess.

@cyhborg that is quite possibly the worst person I have ever seen play RE, words can't describe how clunkier he made the game look. In all seriousness though I hope it's true they change the controls a bit from the RE4 controls, like the creator said, because it won't exactly feel next-gen with tank controls.

It's interesting how the gaming press seems to be anticipating this game more than most of the people commenting here. I'm a huge Resident Evil fan, and I still think that the first installment on PS1 is the best, "tank controls" and all. Here's my problem with RE4: sure, the game looked and played like a dream, but the plot and characters were *completely ridiculous*, not to mention they had little connection to the rest of the series.
In RE2, Leon Kennedy was reserved, stoic, and just an all-around likable protagonist. In RE4, Capcom decided to splice him with Dante from Devil May Cry so all of a sudden he was an air-headed hotshot, tossing around one-liners like he was in an 80's action movie. Overall, it felt too much like a spin-off or a stand-alone game, not worthy to bear the numeral "4" in its title. Kind of like how Resident Evil 3: Nemesis didn't further the story along much at all (except for nuking Racoon City). Code Veronica was more of a true sequel to RE2.
I'm sure RE5 will once again feature a great visual style and gameplay, but I'm hoping it can re-establish some level of seriousness to the story and flesh out the Resident Evil mythology a bit more.
