Rumour: Job Listing Outs 'Star Trek Online' MMO?
Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on July 28, 2008
There's about 15 hours left on a clock at Cryptic Studios' homepage, but an advertisement in the Game Career e-newsletter may have outed what the countdown is for. "Cryptic Studios, a leading independent developer and publisher of massively multiplayer online games, including the upcoming Champions Online and Star Trek Online", reads the ad (large size after the jump).
Back in January, development of this game went from Perpetual Entertainment to an unnamed studio, which around March sounded like it could be Cryptic. I guess we now know that it is. You might want to check back to Cryptic's site (or ours) after midnight PDT for the final word. Either this is a case of Cryptic HR as the left hand not knowing what Cryptic marketing on the right is doing, or they faced an early deadline with this ad, and figured no one would notice before the clock hit zero.
Cryptic Studios is Hiring ... for Star Trek Online! [Massively, via Joystiq, thanks Travis]

Can I get in the holodeck and do a program of me playing Star Trek MMO on a computer, and repeat into infinity? I think this might be the key to the great mysteries of the universe.

@SnakeCL:
I agree, the toon route is the wrong way to go. Looked more like something Disney would throw together for one of their shows. A Star Trek mmo needs to have the "realism" (so to speak) that made the show so great.

@Raziel66:
Originally, it was going to be a mix of the two. You had the option of being on-board a computer-controlled ship, and working your way up to captain of your own ship, or being on-board a player-run ship with others, transferring between them, etc.
How its going to work now, since the project was effectively canned, restarted, put on hold, and switched companies, is anybody's guess. I sincerely hope tho, that they don't go the "stylized toon" route they were aiming to go before the project switched hands.

Meh, star trek is OK, but as an MMO? Hopefully they pull it off, but i doubt it.
Now Stargate would make for a good MMO. Something similiar to Hellgate's style of first person and third person.
While i don't know anythign about the series, the entire stargate mechanic works perfect for new areas, the ability to change servers, instances, etc.

I've never been a trekkie, but I have enjoyed the shows over the years (Enterprise was excellent!). I'm definitely intrigued by an MMO, but I wonder how they would make it work. Would everyone serve onboard a computer controlled ship? Go on missions by taking a shuttle to the surface of a planet? Or would everyone have their own ship?
I think the former would be great with SWG-style professions. Some people would focus on being part of away-teams while others work in the medical bay. Some can be entertainers in the holodeck while others work in engineering and build things. Maybe people can build their own towns on explored planets.
Could be cool.

i actually recently got into Star Trek, pretty interesting stuff. don't really care for the multiple alien races that look like humans with bad acne, but the story lines and characters are cool.
but i'm not sure how a ST mmo would work...

I actually looked into this some a while back and I think it looks like it could be really interesting. However, if done incorrectly, it could also be quite terrible.

Ugh, a Star Trek MMO? No thanks. Choose your race! Human, Human with extra forehead Bones, Human with tail, Human with gill, Human with long ears.
And the missions? Collect 10 Space Rats.
Every skill used in the game will reverse the dampening conduits in some way.
Q shall be overpowered, but nerfed in every patch to no avail.

@Quatre707:
Yeah that's true. We don't really know what Cryptic would have gotten from Perpetual, if anything, so it could be anywhere in it's development. I'm betting all we will get is a website for the game and some official forums maybe...nothing more than that. I will be extremely surprised if they are beyond the concept art stage.
I, along with my guild, are eagerly awaiting the announcement, whatever it is.

Thank God STO IS in the hands of a far more capable developer than it was.What Crytic has to remember is to start out with a limited field with STO and add to the "online Trek universe" as time goes by.Ttrying to incluse everyone's pet race as a starting faction isonly going to cause delays and prblems.I'd be happy starting with Humans,Vulcans,Klingnons, and possibly Romulans if time an resources allowed for them.Coming up with a great core game that they can add to would be ideal.Also remembering that they don't need to be nitpicking over Trek canon.As long as they respect the big and important stuff, all should be fine.Those that cry about a dicrepency in the game about what time Spock was born, should best be IGNORED.

If it was based on the original series it would be pretty cool, but everything from Next Gen on has just been PC crap.

@Sugaray: Swap your priorities on Vulcans and Romulans and we've got a deal. "Vulcans" fall under "Federation" whereas Romulans complete the TOS trifecta of UFP, Klingon Empire, and RSE. My first thought was to roll a Romulan until I realized they would probably be nerfed thanks to the unfortunate plot line of Star Trek X.
If they set it in the 24th century, it's going to have some major balance issues unless they choose to segregate the alpha+beta (TNG), alpha+gamma (DS9), and delta (VOY) quadrants by servers. I'd be okay with just having the TNG-verse but as a DS9 fanboy I won't object to seeing the Dominion enter in. TOS-era would probably be the easiest one to pull off. And it would go nicely with J.J. Abrams Trek movie coming out soon.

Unless I can command my own starship, count me out. Star Trek ain't Star Trek without powerful, big-ass starships that let you do things like command "All power to the engines!"
If they gave the combat engine from Star Trek: Legacy a bit more depth and built an MMO around it, that would get my attention...
