Sega Thinks E3 Felt Like A Hospital Corridor
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:20 PM on July 25, 2008
And the post-E3 soul-searching continues! Latest to be asked for his $US 0.02 is the man with the soothing voice, Sega US boss Simon Jeffery. Who, for all the work he managed to get done during the week, still thinks the event could do with a little more...pizazz.
E3 was a strange beast this year. We had an extremely strong product showing, had some great meetings, and got our messaging over pretty strongly - all at an event that had all the atmosphere of a large hospital corridor...we'd like to see something that represents the fun, dynamic nature of the industry a little better without going back to the insanity that was E3 of old.
It's OK, Simon. We miss the booth crumpet as well.

The problem with the new E3 is that it seems to have become all about the investors and intercompany dick-waving rather than the gamers. Something we should probably keep in mind.

@ApertureScienceIntern:
I agree! Sure the journalists may need to update their insurance plan and whatnot but the E3 before was sure good fun.
Was it chaotic? Yes. Was it fun to skim through pictures and read what Kentia hall had to offer? Hell Yes! =)
@Ragdoll_: I wouldn't use the term "shit" maybe more on the "vomit-like" scale. From what I read most people (fans,journalists alike) didn't like it that much.
@Bashcraft:
Speaking of Kentia, whatever happened to the guys who held booths there with the old E3? Weren't they allowed to showcase their "goods" anymore? That was some pretty funny stuff they had. :D
Ah well there's always TGS...

I think the question we need to ask ourselves is...what is E3? It's a reason to get exciting about upcoming games. What was missing this year? Excitement about the games or games themselves? To me, it seems the latter. Now what reason is there to hold back announcing or showing a game? There are many, but it seems like more and more the big guys are using their own events to do the big reveals, instead of scheduling everything around the big one. And that might not be all bad. For example, many games are getting demo'd at big concert tours and smaller events, which realistically gets the games in the hands of more people. One big marketing blitz and then silence? Or lots of little bits of exposure building until the release date? The marketing guys have done their homework, and it is probably better for sales. And sales are good. Sales get us more games. And everyone can be happy about that.

@ApertureScienceIntern:
I actually agree with Jeffery, the old E3 was far too frenetic to actually provide you with a decent sense of what the gameplay of the exhibited titles was like, whereas the new approach is far too dry and generally unexciting.
The best course of action for the ESA is to find a middle ground between the two.
@fl3tcher:
I believe they have already woken up,
"As we do every year, we're beginning the process of surveying exhibitors and attendees to determine potential changes to the Summit." - ESA representative

Your right Sega e3 this year was weak. Now if your reading this and want to show you could do better then hold a press confrence at TGS and announce... Shenmue's 10th aniversery rerelease! For everything!! ;)

I'd rather the old than the new, but why don't they just immitate the Gameshow in Germany? I read it does a better job of striking that ballance between providing entertainment for fans and also letting the reporters do their jobs unhindered.

E3 right now, seems like someone who got plastic surgery, that went horribly wrong. Now its much worse then before, but E3 still thinks its as good as before.
Hopefully they wake the fuck up, and go back to the old ways.

It all makes sense Sega and Nintendo certainly need to be in ER with their announcements at E3.

'e3 insanity of old'? Sure....it was insanity....but...here's the thing....It was a GOOD insanity. Get your glory back, E3. Before its too late.

I'm getting tired of seeing this guy's mug on Kotaku. He's had like a hundred articles in the last 5 days.

Enough of this guy he's had his picture up at least once a day for the past week! C'mon don't you have a different picture of him? At list flip the image horizontally to make things a bit more interesting.

E3 needs more light shows, more booth babes, and less Nintendo.

@Arkos:
Yeah... IMO he did the best talking at E3, but this has been stretched so far that unless he goes "JUST KIDDING, SEAMAN 2 THIS FALL!" I don't feel the need to check in on him every day.
Then, in another thread Brian said people wanted interviews cut up like this. Still, I'd have watched a 15-30 min interview after setting aside the time. Now it feels as if he's getting as much hype as Halo 3.

I am a big advocate for people seeing the industry as a "real" industry, but E3 was the one time of the year where everyone from the exec to the average blogger
geeked the fuck out
and it was wonderful. I even attended them, and miss the hell out of them.

E3 needs a hash bar, like the World's Fair used to have.
