SOE Awards First G.I.R.L. Scholarship
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:20 AM on July 9, 2008
Sony Online Entertainment has announced the first ever Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) design contest scholarship winner. Nearly 100 applicants submitted their video game concept art and essays for the contest, which kicked off in early April, and from those entries Julia Brasil of San Francisco was chosen to win a $US 10,000 scholarship at The Art Institute of California and a paid internship at Sony Online Entertainment.
"I am shocked and overjoyed to be the first G.I.R.L. Scholarship recipient," said Brasil. "I'm really looking forward to my internship with SOE, and getting some hands-on experience at such a well-known company. It's such a great opportunity."
Shocked, Julia? You need to believe in yourself. Dreams really do come true; you're living proof.
SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT AWARDS $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP FOR WINNER OF FIRST-EVER G.I.R.L. GAME DESIGN COMPETITION
G.I.R.L. Scholarship Program Helps Boost Female Educational Opportunity
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - July 8, 2008 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC today announced that Julia Brasil of San Francisco has won the 2008 G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition. The competition was the first of its kind and was promoted in conjunction with The Art Institutes system of schools, to encourage students toward career paths in the creative and applied arts, ultimately resulting in the development of games that are more interesting for women to play.Brasil, a student in the Game Art & Design program, was awarded a $10,000 tuition scholarship toward her education at The Art Institute of California - San Francisco and a paid internship of up to 10 weeks at the Sony Online Entertainment studios of her choice in Austin, Denver, San Diego or Seattle.
"I am shocked and overjoyed to be the first G.I.R.L. Scholarship recipient," said Brasil. "I'm really looking forward to my internship with SOE, and getting some hands-on experience at such a well-known company. It's such a great opportunity."
Brasil was one of nearly 100 applicants vying for the winning title of the 2008 SOE G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition. In order to become the winner, Brasil had to submit an in-game design, original concept art and two essays.
"We believe our groundbreaking G.I.R.L. scholarship can give Julia the foundation she needs to pursue a successful career in the video games business. SOE is thrilled to jumpstart the first step in pursuing her goals," said Torrie Dorrell, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "We anticipate G.I.R.L. continuing to evolve and snowball, creating even more opportunities for women to get behind these games."
Due to the popularity of the initiative, SOE will make official G.I.R.L — Gamers In Real Life — T-shirts available for purchase sometime this summer. For more information about G.I.R.L., go to girl.soe.com.

How is it legal to exclude people from a scholarship based on gender or race? I first noticed this in the financial aid office at Purdue. There were several phone book sized books filled with scholarship opportunities. 90% of these required the applicant to be a woman, a minority, or both. So, because I am vaginally impaired, I get a $78,000 in student loans and the little miss keeper of the cooch gets free money.
Men really get a raw deal sometimes. Too bad we own everything.

@FullyShadow: Not likely. As long as women feel unjustifiably repressed in the industry there will always be conventions, and things like this geared towards females only.

Instead of feeling happy for someone getting some help via a scholarship, I'm annoyed by pissants trying to create an artificial issue of reverse sexism. It's like it's my first day on the internet or something.

@Trust me, I'm a doctor: In the case of scholarships paid by individuals or interest groups, they set the rules (of course, the uni could reject it entirely). I mean, it's free money - they get to decide who gets it. The uni gets free money for some of their students, the donor gets to have their money go to someone who meets conditions they feel merit the scholarship.
I was the recipient of a minority scholarship (queer students with financial conditions), for which I had to write an essay on how I contributed to our group's wellbeing at the uni), and I've contributed to funds for similar scholarships because I like to know that my money is going towards someone undergoing the same situations I did and are helping improve them. I imagine the same sentiment applies.
If I remember correctly, there are also quite a few scholarships like this for those that contribute to the group in question - you don't actually have to be in the 'affected' group/minority/whatever.

@Tzepish: Have we ruled out the possibility of desire for this field?
I'm in IT security at my workplace and there is only a handful of women in this department, where as the marketing department the men are outnumbered to the same ratio. This makes me believe that it's really the type of work that's the reason for the small number of females in the industry.
On a separate note. Could it be classified as a sexual matter if in fact the employer hires a male employee over a female one solely based on their portfolio?

@Tzepish: It's not about if a certain characteristic of a person is the majority in a field or not; it's about a person with a passion trying to get into the field they love and want to contribute in. If two people try for something, but the determining factor is gender, then that's a problem.

@PumpkinPieman: @Daemonstar:
These are the same arguments for and against affirmative action that have been repeated for decades now...
"Have we ruled out the possibility of desire for this field?"
Nope, but it's very possible that there's less desire for this field amongst women because of societal pressures, not biology, as has been found in mathematics and sciences. I don't think anyone has done formal studies on this topic for game design, though.
"If two people try for something, but the determining factor is gender, then that's a problem."
Exactly, and that's why programs like this exist, to correct for gender-selection. Whether they are effective or not, and/or whether or not their premise(s) are incorrect, I suppose is a completely different matter.
@everybest: This is my favorite explanation.

Is that really necessary?, couldn't you just give up the 10 grand solely on her talent?, perhaps jump start a career of a young women?. I mean, I know they are in the fucking gutters when it comes to profit margin, but must they exploit every single thing?
Well, the return will be significantly higher then 10 grand. Guess the usual superficial, inspiration spin-off worked well. Kudos to SOE's PR team.

Here I am paying my way through software design school by working a full time job and trying to make straight A's so I can get an internship somewhere next year (I'm looking at you Insomniac who are opening a studio an hour from where i go to school) and she gets a paid scholarship for having boobs. Awesome.

But here straight As guy, I'm making it simpler to you:
