Sony Holding Resistance 2 Beta Keys Hostage In Next Qore Episode
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on July 24, 2008
Outside of the most die-hard of PS3 zealots, few people are yet to see the worth in Sony's Qore programming for the PS3. "Editorial" games content provided by the platform holder, at cost to the user? No, thanks. Perhaps sensing this apprehension, Sony will be sweetening the pot for the next episode, offering an undisclosed number of keys to the Resistance 2 beta, scheduled to kick off in September. You want in, you pony up for Qore. Simple.
[thanks Matt!]

@JayD16:
Not really.It's not PSN gold.
See you have a choice and you don't have to buy the service to play anything.Want to know more(This is not Starship Trooper damnit!)about games or get a beta key, then pay.If you don't,then don't.That's choice and it's a good thing.

I'm still waiting for the damn Socom beta from the first episode of Qore to be available for download. I hope it does go up eventually otherwise the $3 I spent on it was pretty worthless, all that was in it was some information I already knew about Star Wars TFU and Soul Calibur IV and some interview with the Afro Samurai guys (but who really gives a damn about that).

I downloaded the first episode of Qore from the USA store. It was nice enough, but not that much content, maybe 20 mins max. BUT you have to pay for this magazine which has adverts in it. Yet Xbox Live have their own magazine 'Inside Xbox' which is weekly and free.
Considering that Qore works as a great promotional tool for upcoming PS3 games, Sony really should make it free.

USD 3 for the month exlusive or beta access 1st. Pick and choose, last month the sweet deal was Naruto demo earlier. You can spend that money on a set meal burger right? Ok, some more lovely host (need more boobies shot) & some developer interview and its all set.

Well lets see...I can pay for videos, interviews and trailers that are all free from any number of websites, "exclusive demos and betas". If a demo is exclusive, it's a glorified beta. And unless a beta is open, it's always exclusive. Instead of charging for their online play, they're charging for something that's universally free?

@JayD16: I agree. This is really the most insane concept and I wonder how many demos will be locked up in Qore eventually. Best thing is, as this ripoff service is not even available in Europe, we have no access at all to it! Now that is really great Sony, thanks a lot!

The Qore subscription is reasonably priced in my opinion, It costs nearly $30 for two copies of OPSM in Australia and a years subscription to Qore only costs around $28 AUD.
It may not be available here yet but I could purchase a network card and easily purchase a sub.

I'm an avid PS3 fan but we should all despise Qore and reveal what it truly is. PSN Gold.
Something I can download that is basically 15 mins of ads. Hey, I'm fine with that.
Make me pay for it? That sort of sucks seeing as its ads but maybe some people will like the coverage.
Adding exclusive demos/betas. Now you've crossed over from adding total content to the PSN to holding demo's for ransom.

I'm guessing this is some kind of PS3 thingy and I was sorta interested in picking one up (someday, when I have money. /sigh) so maybe this is relevant to my interests?

@jfm3: Yes, the Halo beta and all was wonderful but was I actually one of the few who bought Crackdown for the game and not the key?
From my experience, the people who join a beta are there simply to play the game early and not help out with the building phase. I'm not condemning beta players, I'm just saying that it's not fair for the game.
Wow... after reading my comment, I come off as whinny.

Just a word of caution for people about to start a flame war about this.
A well-known Insomniac employee on GAF has confirmed that beta keys will also be accessible to people who preorder the game. Preorders actually get first dibs on the beta, QORE subscribers get in a week or two later.
Just thought I'd clear that up before people start whipping torches around.

Sorry to double-comment, but I am also disappointed in the way betas work. I want to be a part of a beta to help fix the game, not just for the sake of "prestige" that comes with "buying Qore" or "preordering Resistance 2" for example.
(Which I think is stupid)
When the MGO beta was out, I sent comments into Konami after almost every gaming session, for example. Didn't do much, but hey, at least I tried...

For me Qore made sense - about 25 bucks, and right off the bat I got Calling All Cars, which I'd always been interested in but never bit - - turns out it's one of the best pick-up-and-play titles for my group of friends (needs more tracks, but still a blast)..definitely worth the $10 they normally require. So now it's $15 for a years worth of magazine content...that's still pricey due to the volume of stuff, but then factor in demos like this and it's pretty reasonable.

@theblackgate: Actually I bought Crackdown because I enjoyed the demo. Honestly companies that put out betas are looking for feedback on how it plays, but very few of the people who are playing actually know where to report any problems or concerns with the beta. It seems as if companies want to give consumers the benefit of playing early so they could increase their profit margins. While that is great and all I wish they didn't add betas onto other games. Crackdown was exploited and truly was an enjoyable game. I wish more people actually played it.

I actually purchased a yearly subscription to Qore in June. I thought "hey, free calling all cars, and the SOCOM beta - sucks they're limiting the beta, but what the hell, I'm in."
Almost immediately after launching the June issue I felt dirty for my purchase - the videos, while hi-def, and interesting enough, were sure to show up on youtube, and the ads were downright intrusive. When you purchase the yearly subscription, it comes out to around $2 per issue, which I guess is better than a lot of magazines, however, it still feels just plain old dirty - I mean, I like burger king as much as the next guy, but don't force me to sit through a 30 second ad for it every time I want to look at content for a different game.
Furthermore, they only cover about three games per issue - significantly less than any print magazine out there.
I guess what I'm saying is don't buy Qore. If, despite my warning, you DO choose to buy an issue, or a subscription to Qore, just remember - no amount of showering will wash the guilt off of you.

@hk458:
WHOA there cowboy! While Kotaku and gaming information sites are a great place to get information (seemingly) free there's no substitute for hard-nosed journalism with articles that dig deeper and have more information in large part because they have time to build articles that offer more than 1 to 2 paragraph quick hits.
In my opinion magazine and newspaper articles are more broad and can actually be educational as they tend to use a more refined sentence structure and Harvard-quality words.
In a world filled with OMG, IMO,BFF, WTF, NSFW we are becoming a lazy generation that don't seem as concerned with quality or appreciate the time it takes to be creative.
Now, if you're looking for a magazine that offers all of this and more I suggest two magazines: Edge (published in the UK) and Play (by long time editor-at-large and resident fanboy of ALL things gaming and anime related Dan Halverson).

@incredibilistic: Whoa there yourself. Blogging, while different from traditional print publications, is still a valid form of journalism. It's different, but still valid and extremely (not just "seemingly") useful. A print publication can't tell me what happened at 10 AM today. Magazine pages don't change minute to minute with up to date news. Don't stick your nose up at blogs because the information is presented in bite sized chunks - the information itself is still valid, and informative.
Furthermore, it's not all OMG, and WTF's. As in print publications, every writer has his or her own style. Sure, some people choose to use their voice to talk as though they were a lolcat caption, but not everyone falls into that trap. Many of the writers on both kotaku and joystiq (and many others) display excellent writing skills along with an extensive vocabulary.
Does all of this mean print mags are no good? No, of course not - but you should use the two in tandem. I'm an EGM subscriber, and a kotaku reader. They both have their special place in my gaming news intake cycle, and I wouldn't part with either for anything.
Don't be so quick to judge - it makes you sound like a Luddite.

I used to love PS Underground. I also used to buy all sorts of magazines at $15 a pop for demo discs (gotta love Canadian book pricing!) However that stopped years ago, and not, you know, having paid for Qore to see what's inside it, it just looks like PS:U again. Not interested, I'm flooded in demos, movies, articles, and even behind the scenes stuff already. Gating it off just ensures a small audience.

Guys...Qore does not have exclusive demos, but advanced releases of the demos, to go along with the betas, the wallpaper themes, videos, etc. Unfortunately Naruto was the only demo in episode 2 and that was released in the store last week ( about 2-3 weeks after Ep #2 of Qore) And i'd agree that Naruto isn't worth it, nor are many demos (Battlefield: BC anyone?) when it comes to advanced showings. But Qore is still much better than the "official" PS mag which is just the pathetic PSM editors with the official PS copyrights, etc.
