Sony Pulls PS3 2.40 Firmware After Reported Problems
The release of PlayStation 3 firmware 2.40 last night seems to have caused a wide number of issues for those who updated to the new release, as we reported earlier. It now appears that Sony has since pulled the newest update, reverting back to firmware 2.36 as the most recent available version. We were just prompted to download version 2.36 after having skipped the most recent pair of PS3 software updates.
This may be a temporary move to prevent more widespread reliability issues. We are awaiting confirmation on the move from Sony and will update when we hear back.
Thanks to Eddie H for the quick tip.
Update: SCEA has gotten back to us to let us know they are "looking into it".

i dont know if it has anything to do with this update but i have some problems. my modem, internet connection and connection to PS network is perfectly fine and i have reset and tested these connections over and over, NOT CONNECTION!! ok now the probs, the avatars on my friends wont load, wen go to add a friend it says communication with the server timed out, wen i start up cod4 it pauses on CALL OF DUTY4 MODERN WARFARE for like a minute then it goes normally, then wen i start up multiplayer i get signed out straight away, the store is weird things missing and loads slow, and i get signed out randomly wen im just sitting on the xmb (not in game), wen scrolling through friends list it kinda jumps as if its going to freeze but doesnt do it. i am on version 2.41 so it cant be the update idk wats going on if any1 can help PLZZZ email me at abuxton93@gmail.com, i am scared that my $1000 console has something seriously wrong with it and my warranty has expired :( :( :( :( :( :(
@unsungzero:
you don't have to update if you don't want to, but the network update is at 2.36, so if you are at 2.36 now, it won't prompt you about updating when logging in to psn.
kneehighspy
played my 2.4 all day and didn't run into any problems. I think that this has been made out to be a much larger issue than it really is. I'm assuming that if it installed fine, then you should be in the clear. sony will find and fix the issue and release a new version (probably 2.41) in a few days.
Skyelark
@HaydenTenno: sony fixed my ps3 cuz it was suffering from the GTA4 bug for free and i didn't even have a receipt and more and it was out of warrenty.
Stikasasn
@robinandtami: umm, yeah.
messiahxi
So should I leave my PS3 off until they announce a patch or whatever? How serious is the issue in terms of how many people has it affected?
unsungzero
@the world.
Ok yeah. I admit it. I was completely effing wrong. I downloaded 2.4 from the us.playstation site and updated my system not long before the first wind of this hit. Mine was working fine and...
@Eddie... oops!
This sort of reminds me of when I believed Bill Clinton "did not have sexual relations with that woman" way past reality. At least I knew there were never WMD.
EricStratton-RushChair
Saying "I'm on 2.4 firmware and my PS3 runs fine" is the same thing as saying "My Xbox 360 doesn't red ring." Get a clue you fucking denial whores.

@pisseddog:
Wait a second... You bought a PS3, not because of a title, or a feature, or even for a Blu-Ray player.... but because of a firmware update? That's what finally convinced you to buy a PS3? You must really love you some achievements/trophies.
rcgaryk
My PS3 was bricked (sorta) by 2.40. The process went great until it rebooted after loading the update. My PS3 is now stuck on the wave (after playing that orchestral hit) and doesn't proceed to the XMB. It just sits there waving (the wave doesn't freeze...it still works.)
Odd thing: The background color of the wave still changes color depending on the time of day.

@AndriodKing - I was thinking the same thing about the clock, and battery indicator, wonder why they couldn't have a permanent one just below the clock.
Assassin_Kensei
I haven't had any problems at all it works great my only complaint is that there are no game with Trophies yet, at least any I've found.
Assassin_Kensei
Two-point-forty and fine. Is this just an SCEA issue? Mine's Japan region...

@EnigmaNemesis:
If they release it soon I mean xD like in 2 days,because you have to update to ue th f'ing psn,ad I have a crappy ISP and it takes like 1hr to update my ps3 -_-
Umenokouji Aoi
WTF. I actually bought a ps3 yesterday cause i thought this would work. I'm glad i didn't update this morning and break it though.
pisseddog
Good thing I didn't update mine. Lets wait and see... This is a mess Sony, get it fixed.
Shijirou
I had no problem so everyone who said they did must be lying. Really all I wanted was the clock in the corner. I hope they fix that when you press the PS button the battery indicator is over the clock and you have to wait for it to go away before you see what time it is. I'm serious about the clock. FIX IT SONY!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!1111
AndroidKing
No reports of problems with successful installs actually. Too bad people can't read before they do a blog post. :)
Mongoosekun
Just to add another tick mark in the "no problems here" column, updated my 40gb this morning with no issues.
negativexer0
I love the hysteria...the vast majority of posts here who updated their firmware to 2.40 have had no issues. Same here, no issues. But look at the hysteria! Hey everyone, all the planes in the US have been reported to have no phalangee! They are missing a phalangee! Don't get on any planes!
Maximus9
So, we're expecting 2.41 then??? Cool...
Yesterday got my 2.40, so far so good, download & purchase a game via PSN. Have not tried the trophy system yet.
ahmeng
2.40 No problems for me yet. Those that have them shouldn't have trouble trouble tho, just stick in another hard disk right? The problem is the system restarts before (or after?) installing? In which case, you might be able to boot with a blank hard drive, downgrade, then stick in the original.
kiwizz
I grabbed it early this morning and haven't had any trouble with it. Launch 60gig. Hope they get it fixed soon for the rest of y'all.
Lachoy
Apparently, I'm one of the few that had problems after 2.40. Mine won't read any sort of disc now. :(
Visho
I got no problems with 2.4 on my 40 GB model.
hagridore
no problems here either
well aside from the fact that MGS4 doesn't have any trophies yet
vuhal
2.40 Trophy of Formating, here we come! Toot Tooot!

@SuedeGopher: Just the information I was looking for. Thanks for posting it!

@HaydenTenno
Nah, some dumb wench at sony customer support will tell customers their PS3 has water damage. This happened to me when my PS3 cooked from a 2 day fest of MGS4. Stupid chick didn't even know what artifacting was. Gotta give Sony credit though I shipped my console saturday and am recieving it tomorrow. My 360 or Wii have never had problems but if they ever do Sony has really set the bar.

@mcool93:
Oh please ... seriously, just stop!
EnigmaNemesis
Sony said they would only release updates when it's ready and tested... hmmm
mcool93
i called sony tonight and told them i dled 2.40 to a thumb drive and asked if i was ok to update this way. the very nice rep said not too as there is an internal lack of confidence at Sony about this patch. that was good enough 4 me...
rcgaryk
@Umenokouji Aoi:
Why?
EnigmaNemesis
If sony releases a 2.41 fw,I'll be so FUCKING pissed
Umenokouji Aoi
Ahh, so I was right to avoid fireware updates for at least a few weeks.
Antiflow
In case anyone wants to load it up anyway (I just did), you can get it at www.ps3hax.net, or at least that's the only place I've found it as of yet. It's a RAR file (boo-hiss) but mine just finished updating no problme. Looks good to me.
SuedeGopher
Like PS3 is the first console to have a faulty firmware...
slomo788
@PITwelve: see you monday.
topbravo222
hahaha PS3 sucks ; )

I think the web link is going back to the 2.36 update, even though the website says 2.40.

@EnigmaNemesis:
[blog.us.playstation.com]
Here is the status on the blog ...I guess you can only DL it manually ... but for the updater it is down.
As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
EnigmaNemesis
@ckranger11:
[www.us.playstation.com]
Well it is still Update 2.40... and has been all day.
/shrug
And people are still able to update to 2.40 as we speak.
EnigmaNemesis
@ckranger11: Is that what I said?
What I'm saying is that they're magnifying the severity of this "problem" by quite a lot.
The number of users that have reported their problems online so far have been in the single digits.
Sony pulled the firmware out of precaution, not because it's a rampant issue. Check the PS Blog right now for more details.
Revolutionary
mine seems okay so far....eh.......kind of a tense feelin' i've got tho.....
kaskeon
@Revolutionary: So they're lying that Sony pulled the 2.40 update?
Could have fooled me.

@rcgaryk:
What are you thanking them for?
For spreading the FUD?
I've read most of the forum at the official site and I counted less than 5 people that had the update effect them. To even IMPLY that it's a widespread problem ("wide number of issues") is pathetic.
GAF is currently holding a "Did 2.4 brick your PS3?" thread and there's a grand total of 0 users so far out of 300 that have had it mess up their system.
Granted, that's nowhere near the number of PS3 users but that's still saying something.
Revolutionary
2.4 went fine for me
Leepox
@DigiMish
That ICON issue. It's due to your Theme not having the correct icon programed for the new icons and it doesn't know what you want there as they are customizable if you create your own themes. The Internet search "magnifying glass" and the "trophy icon" will show up under default and some newer Sony created Themes. I ditched my Tformers theme due to that. Until some peeps create some new one's. Won't be long.
MetiQluzZ
@Revolutionary: @EnigmaNemesis: Oh, that's right! Completely forgot about that, the new icons haven't been implemented in the old themes yet. Thanks guys!
DigiMish
@rcgaryk:
Mine as well as countless others were not bricked!
EnigmaNemesis
@DigiMish:
That is due to you using a custom theme ... are the other themes default on the other accounts?
EnigmaNemesis
I love me some version 2.40. Had it since last night. No problems. In games messaging away, swapping headsets, comparing trophies. It's all here and working flawless. I think we have a hoax or some butthead's at the helm of their system.
MetiQluzZ
@Mike Fahey:
I just want to say to Mike, Brian, and everyone at Kotaku..
THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks for bringing this to people's attention guys. I'm sure you saved at least one PS3 from getting bricked... Mine.
rcgaryk
@DigiMish: It's your Theme.
As for this whole article: FUD.
Revolutionary
@DigiMish:
Yeah I have a question mark too. Don't know what's up there.
Sollus
Does anybody have the problem where the new icons like the search feature and the trophy collection simply show up as a question mark icon?
It's weird, when I signed into another one of my accounts, I got the icons to show up, but when signed into my main one, I still have question marks.

@Ampillion = That Man.:
/agree
Though I still love PC gaming... and all gaming for that matter. But man gamers sure act like spoiled brats sometimes ... as with all fanbase entertainment.
EnigmaNemesis
@EnigmaNemesis: Oh, I know. I'm just saying that Nintendo system bricking is about as common as this PS3 patch bricking thing, which is to say, rare and isolated. People are going to jump on their bandwagons regardless of what's being talked about here.
PC gaming is definitely the worst of the bunch, but that's because every patch has to take in such a huge variety of different hardware specs, drivers, configurations and try to make them play friendly. And while a PC Game patch might not be near as likely to brick your system, they're notorious for breaking things that had worked hardware wise in previous patches, or trying to make up for games so full of holes they should have never been released to begin with.
Ampillion = That Man.
I don't understand why people would call someone who says they're having a problem a troll. If you go over to the official PS forum, there are plenty of people having very specific issues (along with video) and they're still accused of being trolls. It's like these PS3 fanboys can't accept that there's anything wrong with their system; that it's the user's fault for not keeping their system immaculate/using improper downloading procedures/or for being a "tard". Whatever happened to benefit of the doubt? Of course there are going to be trolls all over an issue like this, but the whole point of forums like those is to help people with problems, not accusing them. People need to understand that any sort of firmware update (PC, PS3, 360, Wii) may have problems with it. That's just how things are.
Whoo, okay, I think I got that all out of my system (after reading 50+ pages of that godawful PS3 forum). I guess this is why I'm usually not an early adopter...although I was downloading the update earlier which 404d sometime in the afternoon. No rush. I can wait for in-game XMB and trophies. :)

@Alicia:
Sure ... but with millions of people out there, with thousands of configurations and network settings ... some things are bound to happen.
Happens with everything, especially with memory data.
EnigmaNemesis
I have had no problems at all with 2.40. It's a great update and it's cool to be able to message in game and stuff. The only feature that I really want them to add to be able to play your own music in any game.
lenandude
do they try these firmware updates BEFORE they release them?
Alicia
Anytime you mess with memory, it's risky unless you know EXACTLY wtf you're doing.
DigiMish
@Ampillion = That Man.:
Amp my man, you clearly understand what I said I am sure.
The point is, it happens on every system. And especially the PC.
The world still goes round ... and people cant act as if this is just isolated to just Sony.
EnigmaNemesis
@killer_meatballs: I rented it first. I enjoyed it. I bought the full game for like $30, and for $30, it was worth it. If I bought it for $60, I'd be downright pissed.
Amazon_Chris
When I initially downloaded it I got a message saying 'the correct hard drive couldn't be found'. I turned it off then back on, and it worked fine. I don't know if I should be worried or not though.
KingBroly
They can patch final fantasy 8 while they're at it.
munkah
@Amazon_Chris:
You bought Iron Man??? WTF??
Just kidding.
killer_meatballs
Kotaku saves the day...for me!! After I got home from work, I turned on my PS3 to DL the update, and nothing popped up. My firmware was still 2.36.
I even tried DL it from my Mac, but couldn't do it that way either.
Now I know.
I was wondering what the heck was going on.
killer_meatballs
It didn't brick my system. But none of the touted features work. Well the in game XMB is only good for the clock. The music feature doesn't work at all. Not on any games & I've tested about 10 so far.
It also only seems to be able to select one song at a time, not supporting playlists. Which sucks, who wants to pause their game every 3 mins to change the song.

@mind in rewind:
Hey thanks man. I'll give that a try, I guess I was confused about it.

Or better yet, is the system update hosted somewhere by anyone?

Links dead, eh? Anyone have a link to the link on playstation's site that I might obssess over it?

@macr0planet: In Arcade mode, did you complete a level without using boost?
Did you not shoot or bomb in Survival mode? That's the only way to earn that one.
Also, did you sync your Trophies? Compare Trophies with a friend and it should work.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't reinstall 2.36... I haven't run into any problems with 2.4 yet so... we'll see I guess.
Handbanana37
Ouch. I JUST uptated a couple of hours ago. I did a backup just in case (Wow it takes a lot to do a 16gb backup!). And then updated... I've had no issues, really, in fact it apparently fixed my connection because i had never been able to play online before... it was a weird bug or something...
The thing is i can see them fixig this thing, it's cool, but it is still a little cluncky, when i go to the inGame XMB it is really slow, i have not seen the 360 in action on this department, so i can't compare, but it is really cluncky. It freezes a lot (it unfreezes by itself). But at least i can add friends directly without leaving the game.
So I hope it works out for the other people that got screwed by this update, i'm happy i'm not one of you guys.
Falsoman
Hey Guys, I've got 2.40 and I bought SSHD just for the occasion. Unfortunately for me, my problem lies in the trophies not locking in after I've earned them!
For example I NEVER use boost and haven't been rewarded for it. Also, I have flown around for as long as two minutes without shooting or bombing and I haven't been rewarded for that either.
Any idea what's going on? Anyone else have this problem?
macr0planet
I thought I'd give my thumbs a break and head over here expecting to read some news I missed while I was collecting trophies in SSHD(12 so far), and find that everyone is going batshit crazy about whether or not their PS3 will be okay. Someone already said it, but if your PS3 still works it will continue to work with the FW update, and I have a launch 60gb. Sucks if yours is the system that isn't taking to it well but it seems like most people in here haven't experienced the problem so commence with the trophy collecting people
Makidian
@akif24: Bricking consoles? Did you read the same article as I?
Fox
I didn't download right away, and now I'm going to wait. I should start backing up save files too. Last night my 360 made a rather ugly whirring noise when playing Gears. It hasn't red ringed yet, and it's my first, but I feel like I'm going to lose it eventually. The drive never opens when it first boots up, just moves an CM then goes back in. As long as it Red Rings and nothing else busts on it, it should be free right?
formina
Well, they wanted to compete with Microsoft in every department .. even bricking consoles by the looks of it.
akif24
I updated last night and had no problems.
This morning, it wouldn't turn on. It did after a hard reset, although I'm still a bit worried.
mind in rewind
I didn't have any problems. The only difference I noticed was that downloading demos was incredibly slow today and it seemed like nothing downloaded while I was playing a game, but I assumed that might be the servers jammed from all the PSN updates being downloaded today.
FreekyDeeky
@xMindPrintsx:
there is quite a few people on the official PlayStation forums that had problems.
jeffreybt
Yeah, apparently it's only happening to people who post on that forum because I haven't seen anyone else actually say they had any problems. 60 GB US launch PS3 updated with no problems. It's probably like 2% of the PS3s and there's a fix that doesn't require sending your system in. Hell, Sony might put out a fix that doesn't require the 50 or so people affected to reformat. Maybe they can tell you what particular file to delete and you're set.
Maverick128
I haven't had any problems either. Tested out messaging and trophies last night.
goodridd
@Gypse-scum: Also, can your PS3 play PS2 and PS1 games?
My computer plays old games just fine.
Oh, and with custom soundtracks.
And this thing called the internet.
It's really cool.
Polterg3ist
Mine works great with 2.40. I couldn't be happier!
noobosaurus
I did not even know there was a problem until this headline was glaring at me, I updated and played last night and this morning with no ill effects. Now if only I had any of the games with trophy support implemented. Oh well.
Flowen
@EnigmaNemesis: By a few you mean one? The only patch I ever remember anyone of any decent number complaining about a Nintendo patch was an earlier patch, and I can honestly imagine it's not nearly as widespread as this. Why? Cause I don't imagine this is all that widespread either. It could be something as small as a certain game or games installed on the hard drive conflicting with some data in the patch. Perhaps a botch in some other company's game and it's trophy support fubar'ing part of the patch?
Ampillion = That Man.
lol surprise surprise

well im glad i got it before work this morning, 60gb working just fine
alyaba
In game XMB does not work in Iron Man. I can confirm this as I'm playing it now.

well while it was working i backed up my saves... so i'll be keeping my 2.40. if something happens there's the hdd method
wststreet
@Furysetzer: Fantstic then!

Good that they pulled this to take a closer look at the problems reported but i have to say this is why i never install any firmware or bios updates etc on any hardware untill they are out for a while.Bugs happen but this one seems fixable at least with the reformat of the hd.
@Gypse-scum: Dunno what your trying to say because my daughter plays games on my 7 year old pc which i let her have use of.Her current faves are oblivion and sims 2.
A pos pc in 2001 is still a pos pc in 2008.Go figure.So to turn this around i will ask you...Is your ps2 playing oblivion today?

but i will go ahead and backup my ps3 hard drive...
kneehighspy
I have a 60GB SKU and I have not had a single issue and I've been running my console for two days now. And yes, after I read this I rebooted to check. Seriously, this sounds like it's been blown out of proportion and Sony reacted to make certain that they weren't causing harm. Now that they do that it seem that people are up in arms about their reaction. Which should one prefer: to live with the possibility that you have cancer, or to go to the doctor before you see symptoms that others believe exist?

Yet another reason not to get a PS3. Sony's "updates" are too unreliable.
Furysetzer
worked fine for me, weird..
jacksons98
Well my 2.40 (60GB) PS3 was fine with it, all working. i must say though the update didn't seem too well polished, was half expecting another update just to tweak it, strange if they rushed it because most have us would have accepted and where waiting for an E3 release.
Oh well I suppose well handled by Sony, well not the fact its a possibly buged patch and no roll-back... Kind of makes me afraid to turn this thing on, so this is the RROD feer...
Ryuujin1024
@Talraen: or something more sinister!!!

@sascha23: I don't think it was a FEW people having issues, its bigger than that.

@Gypse-scum:
Yeah, you're right about the one-game-a-year thing. I mean, just last year there was Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, the Orange Box, Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Enemy Territory Quake Wars, ... oh, you said one game, right?
You know what else is terrible? Playing games with better graphics at higher resolutions than consoles, with mods that aren't available on consoles, and doing it with the precise control of a mouse and extensive mapping options of a keyboard. And the whole RTS and MMO genre just are just terrible. Yeah, sucks to be a PC gamer.

2.4 here I was playing Super Stardust and Final Fantasy Tactics all morning and had no problems whatsoever.

Sounds like Sony is doing the right thing by conducting additional QA based on the feedback received with the few people having issues.
I will hold off for awhile before making the jump.
sascha23
@adaorardor: Not so. 2.20 broke media streaming for many people.
robinandtami
Updated yesterday, and worked fine for me. Seems I was one of the fortunate ones.
Anyways, I need to finish MGS4 soon (before I sell the console).
stikves
2.4 works fine for me though I intially did have issues with in-game XMB lag and patching SSHD; a restart fixed both. I hope I don't turn my system on later today and have it brick. I know there is a solution involving the removing and formatting of the hard disk, but I tell you now if 2.4 wipes-out my Burnout Paradise save file I'll be rife with anger.
@balls187 upside yo head: "Red-Ring-Of-oh...."
More like a brown ring of bullshit.
Replica23
Yep, all the complaing I've been hearing about 2.40 is about how not all old games have the custom soundtrack feature (even though sony never said they would) & idiots mad they cant surf the web and play game at the same time. No one has mentiond actually having 2.40 break their system. I'm really starting to not trust the gaming media, they'll make a huge fuss about something all in the name of being first, not correct. By the way where are the retractions for the 90min MGS4 cutscenes?
immikeulate
40gb ps3, downloaded 2.40 7:00am-ish(gmt), quick downloading and no probs installing.
Was able to play all seven ps3 games I own to check if they updated for trophies and played through my downloaded stuff as well.
Besides finding out none of my games have trophies or support custom soundtracks, my ps3's in tip top condition. Won't even let me roll back to 2.36 on the system update if I wanted to.
Any word if it's just a US problem?
steerpike
I don't know if anyone's having the same problem I had, but I was getting a message "Correct hard drive could not be found." on my 40GB PS3 which had an alternate hard drive in it. It happened 3 or 4 times, actually. If anyone else is in the same situation, try running the fan manually on your PS3. It worked for me and now I'm running 2.40 fine, with Trophy Menus, in-game XMB, etc.
To do it all you have to do is eject any discs you may have in the console. Then power off the switch on the back of the PS3. Hold the eject button and switch the power back on in the back of the console and your fans should spin to kick out some dust. Boot up your PS3 and try it again.
It probably WON'T work for everyone, because it seems pretty random the criteria for failure from this patch. But if you have a compatible PS3, give it a shot and see if it works. Note: even after I did this, the controller didn't sync up until the PS3 was turned on from the system itself, and the XMB loaded fully. Good luck to you all!
TuxBobble
They had a year after the 360 launched to add all these features to the PS3. Now they are trying to shoehorn them into an OS that wasn't designed to have all this stuff running in the background and they're surprised there are issues? It's like the Blu-ray profile fiasco all over again. "Sorry. Your $1500 player can't use any of these special video features. You'll just have to get rid of your six month old player. Can I interest you in a PS3?" Ever hear of finalizing a design BEFORE you release it, Sony?
OutsideTheBox
i'm pretty sure if you have 2.4 already installed and it's working fine there won't be any problems..it's only bad if you had problems with or during the install..thankfully..i'm 2.4 ceritifed..and no problems to report here.
qBIRD
