Splinter Cell: Conviction Delayed
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 2:20 AM on July 25, 2008
When Ubisoft didn't show Splinter Cell: Conviction at its last event, people worried a little about how the game might be doing. Fear not — the game's doing great. So great, they say, that Ubisoft just decided it'd be better off releasing it as part of its "2009-2010" lineup instead of in this year's fiscal fourth quarter. You know, to "bolster" next year, as the company said in its fiscal first quarter results statement.
Signs at Ubidays seemed to suggest that the game was undergoing a reworking, though Ubisoft's reps were specifically vague on details. We also heard that a "way too egotistical" Michael Ironside would no longer be returning as the voice of Sam Fisher.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot elaborated a bit during the company's call to investors:
"We can give him a little bit more time to make sure it can become a huge product", Guillemot said.
Later, he added, "The way we build our [fiscal guidance] plan is always in having a certain number of products... that will not be automatically in the year. It was one of the products that was in what we call the 'risky products'... it's one product that is now leaving to another year, but it doesn't change our plans".
Guillemot defined "risky" as a title for which the company expected high returns, but for which research and development costs are also higher than with other titles.

Also,
@Silent Predator:
That's because the last time a developer has been refreshingly honest and voiced his real opinion about his game, it didn't turn out very well for him and 30% of the internet only bothered to read the sensationalistic headlines depicting his "disappointment" with the game.
That's why we'll have to put up with PR bullshit for decades to come.

Wow... Sam Fisher with someone elses voice will be off-putting. Four games in, and Michael Ironside is Sam Fisher. It'd be like Marcus Fenix, or Solid Snake with a new voice actor... I just can't see it.
I don't know how egotistical Ironside was, there's no quotes from anyone, but business is business.

Without Michael Ironside doing the voice of Sam, I am not buying this game. Whenever there is an actor change on a character that has been portrayed by only one person for years it totally ruins it. Ironside has a very discernible voice and any other actor isn't going to fill the role the way he did.

Ive been a fan since SC 1 - mainly for the multiplayer aspect on xbox live since Pandora Tomorrow came out.
Double Agent was a let down to most of the true cell online community - and I hope they bring back the old style that took extreme skill when facing good opponents - with a nice gadget selection.
Those were the days.

Oh, and why do people keep talking about MGS4. These series are really not THAT similar. SC is its own thing in the stealth action genre, and even that sounds like its going to be worked over.

Bad News: One of my favorite series in gaming will have the longest drought it has ever had. I really wanted to play this during 2008.
Good News: The 360 lineup for 2009 just got even better. Its likely we'll have Halo Wars, Alan Wake, this, Mass Effect II, Bioshock II and maybe even the PJ Halo project. And I know I'm missing a lot there (Alpha Protocal could be great). Cool.

@sascha23: Third party exclusives are essentially a thing of the past really (with a couple exceptions). I wouldn't be surprised if Splinter Cell took the same direction as Bioshock and was ported some time later... Though it greatly depends upon how much money Microsoft shelled out and ultimately what the terms of agreement were.

Take any of the first three games, and flip it upside down.
That's Conviction.
A typical mission would involve Sam Fisher wearing civilian clothes with no weapons, in the middle of a large park, at noon, being hunted by police officers and government agents.

No thanks, how about we just keep it a splinter cell game?
Kojima, tends to make to many cutscenes that show you the action. Splinter Cell tends to let you play and the story unfolds as you make your way through the enviorment, it's way more engrossing. Makes you feel like you are discovering the plot on your own, not being forced into it.
I'm more of a Sam Fisher fan than a Solid Snake fan, anyway.
First 3 splinter cell games were top shelf stealth/action games. 4th was pretty good on 360.

noooooooooooo, I wish they would stop pushing this back. People will just keep losing interest in it. Unless what they do put out just about blows all the other games out of the water. It didn't look like that to me from the videos I saw. They kinda got away from the sneaking around aspect.
Maybe they will rework it to be more MGS4esque, because that is something that 360 fans want.

I really, really hope the reworking means they are going back to the original roots.
It seemed to me they perfected SC's stealthy gameplay in Chaos Theory. I mean, the single player was amazing, and the multiplayer was mind-blowing.
I thought the series would only get better from there in next-gen.
Then they announced DA (and now Conviction). They practically gave players the finger.
"Oh, you like the stealth gameplay? You like the merc vs spy gameplay? Well forget it! We're changing everything!"
An now they're at the point where it's not even SC anymore, it's a weird shift towards broad-daylight running around.
I don't mnd if they make this game, I just wish we got some more of SC's classic stealth. Could you imagine the possiblities of a game like Chaos Theory in today's consoles?

Ubi shelves games all the time to pad the next fiscal year. It doesn't really mean they're still working on it.
It just means that they have more time to sit around eating truffles and drinking wine, or whatever the hell it is they do that distracts them from fixing the bugs in their games.

@dead_red_eyes: "So you're saying that not the character design, not the actions, not the gameplay, not the writing ... but the actual voice IS Sam Fisher?"
Correct... if you've seen the character design of 'Conviction', he looks like the main character from Condemned 2. Hell, he even looked different in DA. The gameplay has been copied/homaged by several other games, not to mention that Conviction looked like it was departing from the classic Splinter Cell gameplay. The writing is cookie cutter Clancy (not saying it's bad, just that you didn't need to play any one of the previous 4 in order to be able to know what's going on).
So yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. If I were handed a Splinter Cell game where the voice actor for Sam was not Ironside... I would ask "who am I playing?"
Of course, now that I know the answer... I guess I won't be asking that. ;)

MGS = Street fighter

1 is more realistic and technical and the other is more charming and fun to play. You have fun playing a mgs and SF, while splinter cell and VF make playing the game more of a task.

I played a little bit of the first SC way back when, but it vanished into the "300"-like bottomless pit of games I "plan on playing" someday. That said, the series is a major IP for a public company and they simply can't afford to explain to their shareholders why the tits on Sam Fisher's cashcow ran dry without losing serious credibility.
The ole "quarter bolstering" sleight-of-hand is a classic move to buy time when there's a quality control problem, but Ubi needs this game to be a hit, and they're clearly getting down to the last grains of sand in the proverbial hourglass.

Not having Ironside really isn't a big deal. The Splinter Cell games have never been about the stories. Even Double Agent, the game that was supposed to make us face tough moral decisions had a lackluster story. The way I see it, if you want story in your stealth games, go play MGS. If sneaky gameplay is what you're looking for, Splinter Cell is where it is at.
Will we ever see the two combined (good story and gameplay, not SC and MGS, though that would be cool)? I doubt it. As long as SC has the Tom Clancy name attached to it, we're stuck with boring political stories with zero character development.

I really do commend Splinter Cell for constantly re-doing/reworking their series with each new entry but what they did with Double Agent was just weak. Chaos Theory PERFECTED Splinter Cell in EVERY way and they just turned it ass upside down with Double Agent. Mainly, they broke the stealth meter which was perfect. Chaos Theory had the best stealth system in any game ever. Period. Aside from constantly trying to innovate why would they literally break that?? D.A's system was broken as far as I'm concerned. There's no buffer between concealed or caught. How can you tell without a slider how exposed you are??
I'm rambling, either way Double Agent was a huge dissapointment and I don't expect the next one to be any better. It's just too different and they've reached the point of no return. I really wouldn't blame Ironside if he jumped ship due to the deterioration of the series.
