Square Enix Confirms Chrono Trigger DS
Square Enix has gone ahead and made it official - Chrono Trigger is coming to the Nintendo DS in North America this holiday season! The game is a port of the classic Super Nintendo RPG, modified to take advantage of the DS's dual-screen presentation and touch screen functionality. They'll also be spicing things up a bit with an entirely new dungeon for the DS version, as well as wireless multiplayer battles.
I think I speak for every RPG fan ot there when I say that this is pretty much the best news I've heard all year. I can only hope that the Japanese and North American release of the game eventually leads to a version for PAL regions, who have never had the chance to play either of the Chrono titles.
Hit the jump for the official word!

Im just speechless at the levels of win achieved by this announcement. i think ill facepalm myself a few times to see if this is real.

Possibly the best gaming news I've heard in a very long time.
Gypsyfly
@henhowc: did you just say you're your own friend?
Zenshai
Dammit, I thought I was done creaming myself when I saw the teaser page last night.
Guess I was wrong...

@dowingba:
"Okay, but whereas I'm basing what I say on fact, you aren't"
FACT: SNES resolution = 256 X 224, DS resolution = 256 x 192. I wasn't attacking you, just questioning whether you were correct. Now that you've decided to be snarky, I've provided the facts. Where did you get your "facts", jackass?
AtomicPlayboy
WOW!

I have to say, I fell out of love with Squeenix on consoles for a bit, but at this point I should just give them my pin number and tell them to ship me their DS games. My girlfriend and I traded our two copies of FFCC: Ring of Fates yesterday for a copy of FF Tactics A2, which I'll stop playing in time for the Final Fantasy IV remake, and since she's never played Chrono Trigger that may end up here as well.
I'd love if they made something neat for the Wii, but at this point they do plenty on the handheld scene for my tastes.
mjn328
Chrono Trigger DS?
Game.
Over.
Dogysamich
This'll only be the best news this year if it doesn't turn out like FFIII/IV on the DS, oh and if it comes to europe.
StuiWooi
Amazing. But...What took them so long??
Xtreme_Hindu_Cow
One new dungeon? At least the company realizes the value of Chrono Trigger. Next Gen Chrono Trigger sequel perhaps? Otherwise known as what will be the most god-like RPG made in the past 30 years!??!?!?!?!
PrivateJ0ker
I'm overjoyed. Buying this game on the first day!
mikes_stalker
I may buy it just for the perks of having something portable and being a huge fan of the game, but would it have killed them to make it 3d like FF3&4DS? Not complaining too much, but for as long as we've waited for this, it's the least they could do.
Shhteve
Ok, so CT is one of my favorite games ever. I've played through it loads and loads of times, gotten every secret, had the PS1 remake, got every ending, own the soundtrack, etc...
But honestly? Not super-excited. Fantastic for the people who've never played it, but unless they've added tons of new content (not just a single "new dungeon"), I'd rather have Mother 3.
Ionan
@DontTouchMyDaughterYouFilthyGaijin: Both my PSPs have never been modded and I buy my games. I know of only one person who has a modded PSP and all he does with it is run Linux (Don't know why, though.) and play SNES games. PSP piracy is pretty bad, but don't accuse the lot of us of it.
Altersparck
@AtomicPlayboy: Okay, but whereas I'm basing what I say on fact, you aren't.
dowingba
Damn, that's a big surprise. Yet nothing I can get excited about. I've played CT to death already... the only reason to buy again is convincing Square to revive the series. And I doubt Square knows what the hell they're doing anymore.
Whoever said Chrono Trigger was a revolution that no one (not even Square) picked up on, you're right. It's sad after all these years.
Xiedo
@Tonx: PAA seemed to.

The World Ends With You has been the only Squenix game I've purchased new in a number of years, as it was actually a new game, out of protest for their lack of creativity, endless ports, and milking of franchises.
I will shatter this practice for the first time this holiday season.
Why?
Thankfully, its "only a port." Re-mastering is for works that don't stand the test of time, or had great vision but came up a little short. Chrono Trigger doesn't fall into either category. In this special case, everyone will get to enjoy a fantastic game that most people don't have access to. Look at it as Squenix providing a service. A warmly welcomed one.
I've also noticed a lot of, "Now if only . . ." statements. Its like having someone gift you $1000 and then turning to them and saying, "Thanks, but why not $2000?" Be thankful. Besides, you are being given the opportunity to speak with your pocketbook. Sadly its the strongest voice we have, however yell loud enough and in the right direction and whatever you're hoping for is sure to appear eventually.
By the way "Photoboy," nice intuition. Squenix has probably been sitting on this for a while for such an occasion. I highly doubt we'll be seeing DQIX this year and releasing CT first will possibly boost the number of potential adopters of the title that they've invested so much time and money in.
pigz0011
Even without the new dungeon, this is awesome news. Chrono Trigger was the second RPG I ever played and it ruined the bar considerably since the next RPG after it was Secret of Evermore. Hey, what can I say. I thought Squaresoft was synonymous with RPGs.
spikespeigel
Anyone know if they will have the FMV's from the PSX remake of the game? PLEASE GOD LET THEM BE THERE!
Namrepus
@Lackshmana: GBA is dead, dood.
~xoaks~
"- Taking advantage of the Nintendo DS hardware, CHRONO TRIGGER makes its way onto the portable platform with all-new dual screen presentation and Touch-Screen functionality"
DAMMIT.
also, do want FF6 in 3D (as i've said OVER 9000 times already)
also, do want Secret of Mana/Evermore/Mana 2 3d remake with (and this is important) ONLINE MULTIPLAYER.
also, do want SMRPG: Legend of the 7 Star on DS. AND A FUCKING SEQUEL. FOR GOD'S SAKE, YOU'RE ALREADY CREAMIMG ALL OVER THE DS. JUST DO IT, FAGGOTS. (pweeze?)
also, do want another Vagrant Story. on the DS. because the DS seems to be made of epic win and pure awesome of late.
(and while you're at it, how about upgrading PE to the DS, another TWEWY, and a FFXIII as well?)
[/crazy talk]
~xoaks~
I could care less about the touch functionality, I'm just stoked about the game on DS. Though I wonder what the functionality is... hmm...
outforprophets
This is good news for me because I never played it when it first came out and my boyfriend holds this game in high regards. (He usually has a good taste in games.)
Plus I haven't touched my DS in ages...
superfrogsavestokyo
RPG's don't sell well in America??? So bad they redid Chrono Trigger to take advantage of the DS????
WHERE THE $%&! IS MY @$%@#$% EARTHBOUND!?!?!?!?!?!?
Later,
Chrome...
Chrome
@Jorw: It's a nice version- I played to nearly the end, but the load times suck- you will notice them. It adds a few extra features like a jukebox and mini-animated cutscenes at some important points. It also comes bundled with FFIV, an amazing game in it's own right.
steve
This is what I get for not reading my RSS feed.... I miss the best damn news ever! By the end of this year I will be complete.
Human Bomb
"I think I speak for every RPG fan ot there when I say that this is pretty much the best news I've heard all year."
That's unfortunate, a port of a decade-old game being the best RPG release all year. Sure, the game is a lot of fun, but the story just isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Arteen
If this is a ANOTHER port than I don't care as I have it for playstation and can copy it to my PSP. If it is remake done in 3D I still don't care as DS can't do 3D (I hated the look of FF3). If it is a 2D remake than I am very very excited.
GreenCard200
Oh happy days! My favorite game of all time is getting a DS port. I've said it before but Chrono Trigger was ahead of its time when it came out and sadly as with the evolution of JRPGs is concerned, it still is in some respects. Now I hope that this sells well so we'll hopefully get a full blown sequel someday *crosses fingers*.
Tenchuu
God and Square-Enix finally heard the thousands of gamers wishing this every year. Also, I saw this coming after the sealed copyof CT was sold so high.
Fendrus
I loved this game so much. It is about time they remade this game. The site they opened for the game it is that clock from the beginning the ticking is spot on.
outofmind23
Fun Fact: Masi Oka For Heroes Favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger (He plays a Time Traveler in the Show)
Beyene
I know what I want for Christmas... or at least what I know what to give my brother...
Now if only Nintendo will release Earthbound 2 (aka Mother 3)...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
YESSSSSSSS!
OH THANK YOU SQUARE!!! YES YES YES!
*Literally Cries*
WOOO! BEST. GAME. EEVVERRR!
Beyene
I don't believe it...
I would have never expected it to come to the DS of all gaming consoles.
It's only a port? With an extra dungeon and wireless play, need more information, but still i would have loved it if they added a bit more than just that, I mean i am pretty much going to buy this game full price, even though I could get it for free online...
RightHand
Seriously. Best news ever.
I just bought the super famicom version off of ebay a few months ago. I can't read japanese but i have it in my collection now along with the same copy of chrono trigger for the snes i've had since the release!
I LOVE THIS GAMEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
FrankxThexTank
I'm glad this is getting re-released. The original SNES cart is hella-expensive now!
Bonus-Round
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buttah
@stranger: Cuz they would make +75% less that way.
MetaKz
Yeah, that's awesome.
hansamurai
How about they go do the super obvious thing and release an exact port for the Wii's VC while they're at it???
stranger
Considering how much focus and production Square Enix gave the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remakes, I am irritated by they implication that this game will be an SNES port that could just as easily have been put on the GBA.
Square has consistently shit on the Chrono games in spite of their obvious greatness and (IMO) superiority to FF and KH.
I hope this game isn't a half assed port with touch screen and 1 dungeon.
And my god if they make it touch screen only...I don't even think I would buy it.
I'll keep my expectations low based on that terribly uninspiring press release, but I hate to think Square will once again do a disservice to the Chrono series and it's fans by charging 40 dollars for what amounts to little more than a straight port of an SNES game.
Lackshmana
I'm going to go with what Eschguy said.
Konami Code
Love it already.
BeniBluemchen
@Jorw: No, no. Do NOT get the PS1 version. It completely ruins the gameplay with its horrendously crappy loading times (it takes an eternity to enter a battle which is supposed to be seamless, as well as going into menus). That version will completely turn you off from the game.
Aside from that, this is awesome news. Completely unexpected. Just as awesome as the Diablo III news. I just screamed at my boyfriend! Yay!! ^_^
angelus-errare
*Squeals like a little girl*
HimeKakyuu
THIS IS JUST THE BEST NEWS EVAH
Kaishin
Y'know, as much as I'd love for this to be released in europe, I just know it will be about 6 or so months late and twice as expensive. Seeing as it never came out in europe on snes, and I had to play via other means, i'll hapilly buy it directly from america.
At least i'll get to play it as nature intended, with some lovely extras.
vyleside
@Suzaku: What you're looking for is a new Chrono Trigger. All I want is a legitimate way to play a game I neglected to buy when it was first released on the SNES.
Yes, I know about the PS1 port. It runs like ass.
j00s
Nice, but just one new dungeon and multiplayer battles?
They couldn't do some new scenarios, new characters, new time periods? Not even throwing in Radical Dreamers or the other Broadcast Sattelite extras like the Character Library?
:/
Suzaku
I loved Chrono Trigger
but this ia big ol meh to me.
I can easily find the original, or the PS1 vesion. If they were going to bother remaking the game it would have been more worthwhile putting it on a system where its not going to look fugly and add needless gimmicks to it. Just about any other system out there would have made this news 200% better. Wii, 360, Ps3, PS2... hell putting it out for the DreamCast would have been better than sticking it on the DS.
Murrytmds
Don't get me wrong, I love Chrono Trigger and I'm one of my only friends that thought that Chrono Cross was a worthy "sequel".
But...ehh...not sure why people are all that excited. I'd rather have a NEW Chrono game or at least some kind of remake like what they did with FFIV. But then again...I suppose it makes business sense for Square to continually re-issue their games when they know that people will buy them.
They must have needed to push something else out to try and fund all the NEW Final Fantasy XIII games they have in development. ;)
henhowc
Wasn't there a recent article about how DS sales would continue to die down? And then Nintendo answered saying "Pokemon like" software could change that? I wonder if Nintendo knew about this at the time...
Brain_Craters
@dowingba:
Are you sure about that? I've played Chrono Trigger using a SNES emulator on my DS, and the resolution had to be downscaled or cropped to fit the DS screen, as I recall. Sure, the combination of both screens gives you more pixels than the original SNES could display, but I wouldn't expect spanning the display across both screens to be very useful.
AtomicPlayboy
"I can only hope that the Japanese and North American release of the game eventually leads to a version for PAL regions, who have never had the chance to play either of the Chrono titles."
not that i care.... i will import the US version anyway, much cheaper thanks to the weak dollar.
ark
Future generations will cite this as irrefutable proof that God exists.
j00s
@Daigoji Gai: Forgive me, but I hated Vagrant Story. the battle system was awful and confusing. Bad game, very bad.
dunnace
"think I speak for every RPG fan ot there when I say that this is pretty much the best news I've heard all year."
Whoa, whoa, whoooaaa! This is also the same year Earthbound came out on VC (and I'm pretty sure Mother 3 will be translated), so slow your roll, homie!
7ucky
I've heard so much about this game but have never played it, this will be a good opportunity for me to experience it aslong as they keep it true to the original.

@Tycoonalex1337:
Read all the comments around yours. It may give you an idea.
krushjudgement
i just peed myself. i am a little too excited for this.

@KaneRobot:
We've been waiting a long time pal.
krushjudgement
@DigitalHero: Agreed. :(
@DontTouchMyDaughterYouFilthyGaijin: Not all PSP owners are "pirating theives" Apparently all your friends are, but I personally don't run hacked firmware or pirated games on my PSP. Anecdotal evidence does not constitute absolute truth.
ビッグ ボス
I prefer not to make useless comments, but this is Chrono Trigger.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Luziphir
Never having a game console until a Gamecube, and being an avid RPG'er, this is awesome news. I always heard great things about Chrono Trigger, and although I could have used an emulator to play it on a PC, the thought of playing through on outdated graphics never motivated me to do it.
Now I can dig out my DS again! (well, this holiday season anyway)
malio
well a third version of chrono trigger hits the market. way to go square... now make a freaking sequel and ill be happy
mascot1063
@Gitaroo_Dude: Remake?! no... This... is... AWESOME! *rawwrrr* *jumps into time portal*
MetaKz
So much judgement is being passed... note the absense of any of the following terms in the press release - and their proliferation in the comments section (and Fahey's article...)
- "2-D"
- "3-D"
- "Port"
- "Emulate"
- "Multiplayer"
And now Squeenix's words that they actually used:
- "Remastered"
- "All-new dual screen presentation"
- "Wireless Play mode"
Until we see some footage or screenshots (likely at E3) I think we can all hold our collective judgements. Even the most even-handed conjecture from that press release doesn't lean towards a new art direction or the classic sprites. It's guesswork at best - I can't wait to see some screens.
Tonx
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! HELLS YES!!!
All that's left to make me happy is a version of VI
GO SQUARESOFT!!! (yea i know but it'll always be squaresoft to me)
RanChan03
@kagebutsu: Why did you have to remind me? That was the saddest day of my life.
@Rebochan: How are you sure that any of these people have complained about remakes in the past? Or are you just grouping all the Kotakuites together, as people like you seem to do all the time?
Libo
@risingphoenix:
I don't have an R4, though I do have an emulator for games I'm only semi-interested in.
So, yay! The official word! This is pretty cool-I enjoyed the game on the PS1. Not sure how much I like the idea of sequels though. A sequel doesn't seem necessary, but if they did make one, and it wasn't bad, then I would probably try it out.
.em.
I'm excited to see what this is all about...considering I missed Chrono Trigger on the SNES.
ThisCharmingMan
This game never released in PAL? No wonder I missed it. Don't screw this up for us again, Square Enix!!
And release Super Mario RPG on the European Wii VC while you're at it.
MeleeKirby
Epic !
Ryak
I wonder where the "brand new dungeon" is (or when...)
supercrap
So its just a straight port....... shame. Would have much preferred a straight port on VC and a full blown remake on ds or psp. Played the game again a couple of weeks ago and I just dont see myself getting excited over a 13 year old game...
poplin
fuck, lucky DS bastards
MrSatan
God dammit SE, I fucking love you. You hear me? I LOVE YOU.
@Llost:
CTs storyline is far more epic than any FF. I remember being actually hesitant when I was finally given the option to fight Lavos. That thing is actually frightening, unlike a certain one-winged Bishie I know.
BigBooBuddy
HOLY COW! Just last week I had officially given up hope on ever seeing any reincarnation of this franchise what-so-ever... then BAM! this happens :] I never got to play it on the SNES but I always wanted too, I don't think Squenix can go wrong here... CT + DS = FTW!
DarthWind
I'm quite excited and happy over this news.
Stevetrop
This makes me want to start a new CT game on the PSX version...I think I will. Haha. But, I'm definitely looking forward to the changes!
nautnaut
AWESOME! really hope they bring it to PAL territories! finally get the chance to play this!
b xx
BlaineT4
Err... What about Europe? Will we AGAIN be left out of the Chrono-Party, the way it happened with Trigger, Cross AND the PS1 port?
All signs point to yes. At least it won't be much of a hassle to just import the game for DS, since no modding of the console is required. OR IS IT?
Tellurian
A Chrono Trigger port with a new dungeon and tacked on touch screen controls? Gggeeehhhh.... The announcement of a new Chrono Trigger, or a wholy revamped re-make, would have been more interesting. This just seems like a cheap holiday season cash out.
I guess on one hand it'll help to bulk out the DS's mostly mediocre RPG offerings. But I'm starting to get sick of the number of Square RPG's on the DS that are just ports, remakes or spin-offs. The World Ends With You was a step in the right direction. Hopefully we see more of that and less of stuff like Chrono Trigger.
Dark_Mirage
A port with an extra dungeon and tacked on touch screen controls? gggeeeehhhh.... I loved Chrono Trigger, but a port just feels like a cheap cash out. A new Chrono Trigger would have been more interesting.
I guess this'll help bulge out the DS's largely mediocre RPG library, but I sure as hell hope we get more original RPG's down the road and not more ports and remakes.
Dark_Mirage
So uhmm yeah, stupid question.........should i get this game???!?!? I have never played it, never ever and have no idea what it is about BUT so you know, the Zelda series is my fave game of all time (just as reference of what type of games i like :oP)
valhum
@dowingba: He got told.
@DigitalHero: You would be.
JokesJokes
As an enhanced port, I hope this is less than 39.99.
M
The graphics on the DS can handle a game so beautiful? I am happy with my other two copies of the game (SNES and PS1). I do want a DS for the KORG Synthesizer, and homebrew. THis also may be added to the list.
jackal888
This is excellent news, but... if they can confirm CT so quickly, where's my confirmation on SO 1 and 2 PSP?
C'mon, Square, I am dyin' over here!
Schroeder
That's good and all, but I already played this game back then. I see no reason to pay $40 for something that belongs on the VC for $8. If they remade it FFIII/FFIV style than I would think about it.
gencid
Hooray!

Oh god YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now, all we need is SUPER MARIO RPG and I can officially kiss my life GOODBYE!

gophzero
Nice, I'll be getting this for sure. Chrono Trigger has always been one of my favorites. I wonder if this will include the cutscenes from the ps1 remake?
Sir_Crocidile
Wewll, the SNES one costs a lot more than the DS one will on eBay, so yeah, I'm all for a copy that I will actually be able to buy and play.
incognit000
pure win
Zenshai
"A brand new dungeon...."
Sold. A modicum of new content was the sole requirement for me getting the game, and it can be as little as a single room and that's enough for me to buy my third version of the game.
NoFunShogun
I have the PS1 version of this game, but it just won't to my memory card. (Yes, it is a PS1 card). Anyone know if this is because I have to reach a certain point or it's my memory card? But either way, Chrono Trigger is a pretty good game and I'm excited to play on my DS. Let's hope that they still use sprites and NOT use 3-D graphics. =D
DJSessum
...you know, I'm going to just sit here and soak up the irony of how much constant harping there is over incessant remakes and sequels, in contrast to all the squeeing over this particular remake.
I think the lesson we've learned is - remakes and sequels are bad. Unless they're remakes and sequels of games *you* want.
Rebochan
It be a port. Meh, that's ok.
agustin2489
Will they include the video clips that the ps version has?
I'm crying. This is one relic of the past that will never cease to warm my gaming heart to its core.
Kempatsu
Sweet. Here's hoping they emulate it properly. Though I'd have been happier with a complete remake, ala FFIII and FFIV just because. Oh, and a fresh script - CT had one of the better Woolsey era scripts, but I'd like one that reflects the state of localization today. Not that I'll be too bent out of shape if its the old one...it's a *damn* good script.
I do wonder if this is symbolizing some movement on the Chrono franchise. Things ground to a halt when the creative people in that franchise left to form Monolith Soft, but I know that some of them have trickled back to Squeenix.
Rebochan
I'm shocked! I have been wanting to play this game for a long time.
Kinburn
Really? Nooooooooooo. I refuse to believe it, it would be way to awesome if it were true. I have already have given up hope for game in the franchise and have long let it go. Nope sorry, this is too good to be true.
sergotron
Holy shit, that's nice. Color me excited.
GwennBlackfeather
@CaptLtrl: agreed
thejakeman: visit my site!
@Llost: Oh, by the way - once we pressured the DM for a tabletop D&D game into giving us an opportunity to do some powerlevelling, gain lots of experience. He eventually stuck us in a shrinking room with a neverending supply of monsters. We gained lots of experience, but were all doomed to die. Fun times!
Tonx
My goodness!!! I just got told this morning that the company i work for is going out of business but this has got to be the greatest day ever lol!!!!!
ziggy6069
@Llost: It's not the story that has a pace slowdown - it's the entire game that gets a pace slowdown. RPGs have a fairly routine formula of switching between story elements, combat elements, travel and communication, maintenance elements (inventory management, for example) and then break it up with a few minigames or cinematics. Chrono Trigger does an exquisite job balancing everything out so that each element never takes over. A good counter example is Final Fantasy VIII, where the sometimes confusing and hard to navigate overworld makes for long travel times and doubling back combined with repetitive battles, when all you really want is the next story point so you can leave the area behind. Final Fantasy VII also keeps this balance very well, like Chrono Trigger - but occasionally punishes you with additional irrelevant battles for making a wrong turn. (Which is why FF7 is much more fun the second playthrough, I found).
Tonx
meh is all that comes to mind - they potentially could add another time period, character or ending on here without corrupting the core game. All we get is another port? I would've ratherd Secret of Mana
TheLegendof_Erick
"...wireless multiplayer battles."
Square Enix, you can implement multiplayer battles into this but not FFTA2? Fuck you.
sanyo
FUCKIN HELL YEAH!!!11!! Really this is exactly what i wanted. A straight-up port of one of my most favorite games. I love you Square. Im so friggin happy
smuckersisgood
You guys are cheering now, but wait until you see what a girly man Square-Enix will make out of Chrono if they redo the visuals.
Gestahl
This is good. This is very. very. good.
Sicrowell
@Llost: In a tabletop RPG you can have the monsters do whatever the hell the DM wants them to do.
Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc
@TheOriginalEd: Downsampled? What? Why would the music be downsampled on the DS which has way better sound functionality, not to mention cartridge space, than the SNES. And guess what? That "tiny screen" will be able to display more pixels than the original SNES game had on screen! But whatever you're just randomly trolling...
dowingba
@Proto_Man: Maybe they have more lined up for E3. I'm hoping they have plenty cos last E3 I found a little boring.
Llost
I've almost never had a reason to be overly cheerful at a Square-Enix announcement, as I live in England. But this is great! My only experience of Chrono Trigger was as a ROM, and you don't get the same kind of experience like that... All I wanted was the chance to purchase and play the game. About eight years later, this wish has been granted!
Now I'm starting to worry myself... They can't make a DS game region locked, can they? Can they? No, of course they can't... Can they?
carrliadiere
@Tonx: I agree it would help the pacing of the story but for me I can always remember the story so don't need it coming hard and fast all the time. Random battles add a level of fun for me too since I can level up and fight stuff alot which I like doing. I do think it's a good thing to miss it for those reasons but I also like having it so either way I'm fine but I just don't see why people dislike random battles most of the time.
I've never played a tabletop RPG. Can you have the monsters come back by leaving and re-entering the area?
