The Force Unleashed: Epic Moments And Mindless Slaughter
Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:40 AM on July 22, 2008
Along with the cartoony yet curiously compelling Clone Wars and the innovative Fracture that is hovering at the very edge of my interest, LucasArts presented one more game at E3 2008, and this one is truly going to be epic. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a game I have been secretly drooling over since it was first announced, from both a technical perspective as well as the story standpoint. Sure, die hard Star Wars fans complain about continuity, but what else is Vader going to do during the gap between movies? Kick back and eat some Hot Pockets? Sure, but that only takes like five to ten minutes.
Between the LucasArts presentation of the game and my brief hands-on, I walked away feeling confident that this could not only be one of the most exciting Star Wars video games of all time, it could very well provide moments more epic than anything we saw in the three prequel films.
One particular moment had me believing in the Star Wars franchise all over again. The story opens with Vader hunting down a surviving Jedi hiding out on the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk. He finds the cowering Jedi, but as he prepares to strike him down his lightsaber flies out of his hand, into the hands of a small child. There is a moment right then...Vader looming over this small boy, defiantly holding a weapon against one of the most powerful beings in the universe...it gave me chills. Nice chills.
From then on the story revolves around this secret apprentice, whose powers can only grow. He walks into a room filled with Rebels and Imperials, and everybody dies. He's a secret, you see? You see him, you've pretty much signed your death warrant. His is, for all intents and purposes, a Force ninja.
Despite the recent spoiler-filled trailer, there will still be plenty of surprises in The Force Unleashed for fans of the Star Wars films, from returning characters from the prequels to all-new characters never seen before in the Star Wars universe. During a brief bit of game involving a fight with a massive rancor a dark-haired male character flashed by the screen, and the gentleman presenting the game quickly blurt out "Who's that!?" before telling us we'd have to play the game to find out. I have my suspicions though.
As for the gameplay itself? While I didn't get to try out the Wii version with it's lightsaber controls, I did spend a bit of time with the Xbox 360 version in which our hero (anti-hero? villain?) wanders into a fight between Rebel and Imperial forces in a Tie Fighter factory, and carnage ensued. Force powers tossed enemies about like rag dolls as they desperately tried to save themselves from my wrath. While I longed for some of the powers I had been shown during the presentation, the potential was certainly there. The only problem I really had was overconfidence - I felt like such a bad arse that I wound up dying horribly. Should probably have channeled all of that confidence into hate or something. Whoops.
The graphics are nice and clean, but of course the physics are the real star here. The Digital Molecular Matter technology really shines in conjunction with NaturalMotion's Euphoria and Havok physics. I notice a few issues, such as trees that seem to break as if they were planks of wood instead of living plants, but for the most part it does the job quite nicely.
While LucasArts' Fracture gives you control over the forces of nature, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed makes *you* the force of nature. It could very well surpass Republic Commando as my favourite Star Wars game of all time, and it's really hard to top Sev and crew.

@Weirdwolf: I thought the first and second Rogue Squadron games were awesome. Not deep or complicated, certainly, but big fun. Never played the third after all the bad press... still, wouldn't say that they're "sullying" anything...
I've always preferred the space combat Star Wars games myself, so I'm pleased that this one is getting me so excited! Roll on, release date.

LucasArts hasn't really been a triple-A developer (in my eyes) for a long time. When I was a younger thing I love-love-loved their stuff - adventure games like Full Throttle, Sam & Max, Grim Fandago, and the really-old, really-good Star Wars games like Tie Fighter (ugh, it was so good) and Dark Forces (the best sprite-based FPS ever. Yes, better than Duke, better than DOOM).
I'm kinda' going into Force Unleashed with ye olde gamer mindset: high hopes and low expectations.

@EnigmaNemesis: Not to mention the amazing Jedi Knight Series' precursors in Dark Forces!
Seriously, LucasArt's best work is so great that it literally has me thinking about the events and characters in the games (well... and Anderson's and other author's novels as well) when I hear the words, "Star Wars", before the immediate events of the trilogy.
I'm glad there will finally be what looks like a return to quality Star Wars games with SWTFU.

To be honest, the game looks cool. But from a canon standpoint, this is just another example of George Lucas taking a shit all over the continuity team at LucasFilm whenever he gets a boner to greenlight a new project. There really isn't a load of time between the prequel and original trilogies that hasn't been covered to death in the comics and novels. Check out the crowded Anakin Skywalker entry at Wookiepedia-- luckily, after Mustafar I don't think Vader's got an anus anymore, because I doubt he's got enough spare time left to pinch a turd between episodes III and IV. But Lucas wants it, so he's going to have Leland Chee and company retcon the shit out of the mythology and insert Bright Eyes, Lord of the Sith-- I mean, Starkiller-- into the canon somewhere. And the same thing with Anakin's padawan in the new Clone Wars series. George Lucas is like a little boy who can't stop messing with his bathroom habit-- just flush it away, George, and make something new.
I'm excited about the game, but I wish he'd just let them-- or ask them-- to explore another part of the Star Wars timeline that's not already overflowing.

This game looks like it will be good times. I really don't think having more epic moments than the Prequels will be tough, as they are rubbish that my mind refuses to associate with anything Star Wars.
It might however be tough to get moments more epic than the Clone Wars cartoon. Grievous was a champion of epic in those.

You sully that list with the Rogue Squadron!
The first was great, the second meh! and the third utter utter trash. I played the bonus arcade games more than the proper game,(oh I wasted so much money in the sit-down vector graphic star wars arcade game now they should be on your list)
Anybody who played RS3 could tell you that Lair would be a let down, it was dogged by the same problems, looked amazing but was let down by poor mission structure, targeting problems and terrible on foot sections.
It went downhill faster than Sonic.

@InsidiousTuna: there is no multiplayer here. the length of the campaign is important and hardly arbitrary. i wont buy it if it contains 8 hours of gameplay and nor will many others.
in fact frankly i dont know why im making a reasonable response, because thats a damned stupid post you made. you seriously believe the amount of time you can invest into the singleplayer of a game without multiplayer is unimportant. the 'story' is not what you play in a game. you play setpieces within a story. apparently all you need to buy of this game is the novelisation, be it ten pages long, or maybe you prefer an animated short using the game engine. i would like to play through in control of enough fights, locations, missions etc to get value for money.

I'm about to correct someone on the Internet about a piece of Star Wars trivia. This makes me sad, seeing what I've become... but it must be done!
@jollydwarf: If you're referring to the line in the movie about the Falcon doing the "Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs"... it's referring to the distance from the Maw, which is an enormous black hole cluster in the Kessel system. When smuggling spice out of kessel, mercenary ships would frequently skim dangerously close to the event horizon in order to avoid Imperial patrols. The Falcon, with her engines constructed out of Pure Awesome, was able to skim much closer than anyone before.
There! Now you can consider yourself educated. :P

It would be nice if LucasArts could come to some sort of agreement with Steve Perry et al and get Vader's unknown apprentice to cross paths with characters from Shadows of the Empire. Even though I didn't like the book, it's still there -- it still exists. And this game claims to take place after Episode III, so there's plenty of reasons why the apprentice could cross paths with Xizor or others.
Considering the era the game will take place in, I wouldn't be opposed to a gentle nod Ann Crispin's way, either. Her Han Solo trilogy certainly painted a more intelligent, believable, and above all gripping prequel picture than Lucas managed.
Still, the loudest voice in my heart is saying "Pleeeeeeeeeease don't let this game have any tie-ins with any of the other franchises." LucasArts makes great games but they never seem to do cameo appearances right. They're either too unimportant and brief (like Jabba in the original Dark Forces) or just plain campy (like Lando in Jedi Outcast). Campy can be fun, but campy takes away from the possibility of epic.
And The Force Unleashed has every indication of quite possibly being epic.

i reckons this will have some decent play time in it. i mean lucasarts never have skimped out on content before in terms of single player games, and when they do tag on a multiplayer its usually done as an afterthought. they rarely let the single player suffer just to wedge in some random multiplayer, unless multiplayer was the point from the get go.

@KM91: Yeah, he's free to add to the story, no doubt he has the right, I just wish he wouldn't because he sucks at it. Look at what he did to Jones. And the Darth vader origin story could've been much much better. I just don't see "I love you so I'm gonna be evil to save you so I'm gonna kill kids because I'm evil, so I'm gonna be more evil, so I'm gonna choke you in a jealous rage and fight my best friend to the death" as a very good plot progression. Maybe that's just me. The lightsaber fighting was cool, the visual effects were awesome and some of the performances were great (Ewan McGreggor, Liam Neeson, the guy who played the emperor were all really good) but besides that, those movies are weak sauce, and the story is one of their biggest failings. KOTOR I had a better story than any of the prequels, by far. Lucas needs to retire his creative control and hand it to someone who's not senile (and those crappy books just need to stop).
