The Week in Games: Faster, Higher, Stronger
Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on July 7, 2008
Wonder if Beijing 2008 will feature photorealistic smog effects or take incorporate the stupefying algae bloom in the nautical events. Still, pretty ambitious of Sega to put out a sports game featuring events that even sports fans don't follow except for two weeks out of a four year span (and dropping it less than a week before NCAA Football 09). If the spirit of brotherhood and competition isn't your thang, Unreal Tournament 3 comes to 360 this week also. Or maybe you prefer Sports Party on the Wii. Or Purr Pals. Let us know what you're buying/renting in the jump.
Monday (July 7)
Unreal Tournament 3 (360)
Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice (PC)
Tuesday (July 8)
Devil May Cry 4 (PC)
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (360, PS3, DS)
Beijing 2008 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games (360, PS3)
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Wii)
Ghost Online (PC)
Wonder World Amusement Park (Wii)
Carnival Games (DS)
Thursday (July 10)
Purr Pals (Wii)
Friday (July 11)
Sports Party (Wii)

the beginning sentence bout beijing game having smog effects is so funny. because beijing is rated the cleanest city in the world and most sunny blue skyed city. beijing is incredibly clean and so healthy it is undescribable. beijing is the best city ever. ppl dont understand the culture of such a great city and all they care about is the smog and pollution which doesnt even exist in such a clean city. maybe they are just talking about there own cities in america and australia.
the marathon runners in beijing will be so healthy and breath 30000% better than in other places. i cant believe how un-polluted beijing is.
the olympics in beijing are the best. wats wrong with everyone in the world. i am right for everything. everyone againsts this is clearly wrong. watever anyone says that is negative for this is sooooo wrong cant believe how wrong they can get

@Grumps: Boy, when I was your age, we hammered at the A and B buttons by hand with the controller on the coffee table. Turbo buttons?! Bah! You kids with your fancy-dancy doodads and motion-sensing controllers.
You don't know how easy you gamers have it nowadays.

Picking up FFCC: Chocobo's Dungeon for sure.
It's gotten surprisingly good reviews, I love the job system, and I like the rogue-like genre.

The real question is how you're supposed to play an olympics game without turbo controllers? I don't say any ever for the new systems(360 at least).

Are they expecting to sell that game internationally with all those American flags?

Damn, Mario and Sonic at the olympics sold a TON. NCAA football is out, but it won't stop the sales outside of the US, especially in Europe.
Track and Field is still where it's at.

@AuthenticM: Each territory gets a different box art. Don't quote me on this. I'm just pulling this out of my ass. xD
How cool would that be though. Each territory gets a cover with their flag and their top athletes.
I can't wait for the Jamaican cover for the Winter Olympics game. Cool Runnings FTW!

Considering importing Chocobo's Dungeon. A bit torn on the whole UT III issue though. my PC can barely handle watching movies, so UT on the PC is out of the question.
If I get it for the PS3 I'll get mod support, and can tinker with making my own stuff, but I heard hardly noone plays it online, where all the fun lies.
If I get it on the X360 on the other hand, I get loads of players, i have a bigger friends list, more people use mics( yeah, I know, it can be a double edged sword)
but I'll most likely wont get much mod support. and the little we get we probably have to pay for.
Anyone have an opinion on what console to buy it for? Online play and mod support are almost equally important, but online play wins by an inch.

Unreal Tournament 3 for me this week. Actually the game launched this Friday in Europe so I'm playing it and it is absolutely brilliant. The true sequel to the Unreal Tournament 1999.
It's a very high quality port, I think it's the best version, even if it hasn't mod support.

And... regarding the UT3 anti-mod controversy. Even though I'll miss the nude skins, the lego levels, the giant bathroom levels - the general insanity of anything-goes - I don't yet have a PS3, or a computer capable of running the beast... so how else am I going to play it? And play it I will. I've been a fan of the series since the original Unreal had bot support for my poor 56k of olde. Plus, I'm a sucker for split-screen games that I can play with fleshy friends and take online.
So the anti-mod support doesn't really bother me... especially since I get the feeling they'll be releasing content packs for DLC from the better mods created over time, and I won't mind shelling out for the additional content.

UT3 and Civ Rev for 360 are on the pre-order for me, and should probably arrive about the same time, on the 9th, fates willing.
Really looking forward to both!
In the meantime I guess I technically have more than enough work, reading and Bad Company to keep me entertained...
And yet. Three days still feels so long!
Oh. And my IE7 hates Kotaku. But that's okay, because everyone hates IE right back.

Civ revolution came out a month ago in Europe. UT3 came out on Friday. It felt so good getting messages from Americans on my FL saying "Dude UT3 is not even out yet, how the fuck did you get it?" It may not have the mods but it does have Gears of War 2 video which slightly makes up for the lack of mods. I was thinking about getting it on the PS3 but I heard that not a lot of people play it anymore.

Nothing for me this week. As usual. Being poor kinda sucks. But its ok, I still have plenty of different crashes to do in GTAIV, starts to collect in Super Mario Galaxy, and brawls to brawl in Brawl. I think I'll be ok.
Not to mention that the Pain updates actually make me want to play the game again. Which is good. Ragdoll physics make me happy.
