The Who Playing Harmonix/MTV E3 Concert
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:10 AM on July 17, 2008
Tonight, Harmonix and MTV are holding a private concert to promote Rock Band 2. And headlining the event is, are you ready, The Who. On Saturday, the band recently played its first US show in over a year for VH1's annual "Rock Honours" program, airing this Thursday. The Who is fronted by Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend, who are the band's only surviving original members. John Entwistle died from a heart attack in 2002, while Keith Moon overdosed in 1978. Fun fact: The Who's current drummer is Zak Starkey, who Ringo Starr's son and was drumming for Oasis.

I noticed on this week's DLC that they put a little more effort into it:
Unlike previous DLC, the Who songs include the crowd singing along as you perform well during the song, and also includes new info cards for the loading screens. I know they won't do this every week, but I hope for any big name releases they continue to do that.

@Zerozaki Ishiki: Horrorshow?
I loved what I watched of it...which admittedly consisted of the above segment, some girl dancing in a tub of beans, and Jack Nicholson pretending to be a psychologist.
Then I couldn't stand anymore. But it's undeniably the best The Who movie ever made.

If not for the fact that they are old as fuck, I would be really excited.
I am still going to watch it though. I mean, come on, it's T Who!

Okay, so MTV HD(essentially a mature, music-focused MTV) has been showing The Who stuff all week to hype the Honors, and yesterday was this:

A couple of seasons ago on Top Gear, they did a van review where the boys where shipping The Who's gear from Hyde Park to somewhere else.
Fantastic quote from Jeremy Clarkson: "Zak Starkey, unlike his father, is a drummer"

@kingofallcosmos: The Kids Are Alright is pure rock classictry (I'm making it a work ok?).
Tommy movie is indeed a fucking horrorshow. No two ways about it. Oliver Reed is fantastic in it though. But then, he's fantastic in everything.

@Luke Plunkett: nah dude, it's featured on Baba O'Riley which isn't a live recording. it is a nice subtle touch and you can tell a lot of love when into it. biggest surprise for me is how "real good looking boy" is a great song to play. and zak starkey fucking rules i now know.

@Luke Plunkett: nah dude it's on tracks that aren't live, like Baba O'Riley. The whole crowd goes along with "onnnnnnlyyyy teenage wasssssteelland"

@dan: Glad someone had their thinking cap on last night.
@KaneRobot: The crowd singing's because, I'm fairly sure, they included some live songs as part of the DLC, to make up for the fact they couldn't get some of the old master tracks. I only just woke up, though, and could be TOTALLY making that up.

@Arsenicberyllium:
I disagree. The Kids Are Alright is a way better movie. I could watch it anytime.
I hope that the crowd is sufficiently excited. The Who played a couple of hours away from here last year, but the cheap seats were $150 each. I would love to see them live.

Yeah, I noticed when playing Real Good Looking Boy that this guy seemed to be able to play damn near as manic as Keith Moon used to. Not quite, but awfully close.

@DrStrangepork: Well if you start saving now, you'll be able to afford it when it releases later this fall :)
Of course, I need to buy a new X360 as well. I hocked the last one for music equipment. Damn my impatience.

The Orpheum Theatre can hold 2000 people. That's a lot of invites!
Only a couple of miles from me. So close, yet so far away!
@Luke Plunkett: More Page K posts, please. Loving it.
Too bad all of our guesses on The Who were moved to some other post, due to the Kotaku hamsters taking a break last night.

@KaneRobot: Yeah, I noticed that too. I was just playing Baba O'Riley and my guitarist was imitating Townsend with the big sweeping arm motion. It was awesome.

That is pretty sweet, I just bought The Who pack on Rock Band yesterday, it is pretty sweet! Rock Band 2 has a great set list, and some of the new features for GH WT look cool too, I might have to pick up both :)
