Things I Learned About LittleBigPlanet
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 12:00 AM on July 18, 2008
Man, LittleBigPlanet looks great. So, so, so great. In yesterday's LBP breakout session, Media Molecule's Alex Evans walked us through the game, pointing out all sorts of fun facts. Like? Well....
• The game will feature trophies.
• If two players of different levels play co-op together and one falls behind, that player will instantly die and respawn so the two players can keep up.
• There are over 60 tutorials that focus on creating.
• Because the Sony E3 press conference showed it was possible to embed text on objects, it will now be possible to do that in-game. (Media Molecule wants to make sure everything it's now showing with LBP is actually possible for users to make.
Hit the jump for the rest.
• Originally, they planned to give players complete freedom of depth, but found that a richer experience could be gotten with only three layers of depth.
• If you use voice chat, Sack Boy will be lipsynched to your speech.
• The tags used to label level you create are pre-selected and were intially from LOL Cats. This has since been changed.
• Stephen Fry does voice over work for the create mode.
• It hasn't been announced if you can import your own music into the game. Says Evans, "There's no reason technically why not".
You might've known all of these. Heck, you might even know more. Good for you.

To all saying that this wont sell systems, have you all forgot the best selling title on the market? If Sony can show the SIMS fans this game and grab them then they have a hit on there hands. This is for the people who like control in their games and customization.
Sony needs to start pimping the game now... Ads should be cute little skits created with the game or levels that mimic classic game levels.

I seriously don't understand why everyone cares. I can't believe people will pay $60 for something that is essentially four-player Mario without formal enemies.
Yes, it has "limitless potential," and you can import things and talk. You could do the same in Worms and countless other games. And is the level creator really what people focus on in Smash Brothers?
It's very cute, and the music is well done. It reminds me of Lost Winds for WiiWare in style and presentation, which is a good thing. But charging $60 for something that should probably be cheaper or free? I can't understand why this or Home are as exciting as people make them out to be.

Stephen Fry? I knew that was coming...well, not that they were going to use Fry per say but I knew the training modes would have a narrator in the style of '70/80s British children's TV programs that had a kindly older voice (like Tony Hart) narrating the on-screen hi-jinx. LBP was after all inspired by stuff like Take Hart.

Alright, I have a question for all of you people who claim to 'not get' LBP. That question is: when you opened up your NES (if you had one, of course) and stuck in SMB, did you turn it on, and say to yourself, 'I don't get it,'??
Christ, what's not to get? You're a running, jumping, sack thing. You run across levels and solve puzzles, a la other games in the genre called . And although that quick description doesn't even come close to doing LBP justice, that's the gist and I'm trying to K.I.S.S. Aside from the aspect, there's a fuckton of other cool things to do with the creation tools, which have been touted ad infinitum.
Plus, it's just a beautiful looking game. Lemme sum it up for you: It's Mario, except he's a sack, there's no princess to save, and it looks a billion times better graphically. Same fun, same genre, different game. The end.

@AngelMayLaugh: @MSUSteve: The fact that one of them has fallen behind maybe? All footage I can recall shows all playable characters on screen together, so presumably the camera zooms out to keep everyone visible. If it reaches a certain point, it's probably safe to assume that whoever is farthest from the goal is falling behind.
@youruglyclone: Not the only person. To me it looks like a the next generation of line rider... Fun for 5 minutes, and then a few artistic types with hours upon hours to kill will make some elaborate and inventive levels that you can watch someone else play on youtube.

Why would someone want a LBP shooter? someone correct me but there are a million shooters for every platform game.
Also when he says a higher levelled player he might just mean a higher skilled player. Creating levels will be cool but a minority will probably contribute to that aspect, then again i can be wrong as i usually am.
Also this has the potential to be the PS3's Mario Bros game.

@NovaBlack: Sonic 2 was really really fast paced though. It was impossibly difficult to keep tails on screen with the screen moving that fast. LBP doesn't seem like it's possible to move all that fast. I don't think it'll be much of a problem. The "going off screen and dying" mechanic seems like the only logical way to do things.

Posted 12:28 AM 18/7/08
@Captiosus: it depends on how it's marketed. More than quality marketing is king when it comes to shifting units so if Sony play it right they could well benefit from LBP considerably more than say MGS4 et al (which appeal somewhat exclusively to the hardcore gamer).
Regarding peoples constant complaints about it not seeming like a game; are you forgetting it's a PLATFORMER with CO-OP capabilities based within a physics enriched world? They are focusing on the user generated angle a little too much but it's a good way of getting across all the possibilities that will be available to you on release. In a matter of minutes you could create a simple RACE map for you and your friends, or a traditional platforming experience punctuated with scenarios that require teamwork to overcome. It's not supposed to be anything other than a platformer with user generated content and multiplayer capabilities as far as I'm aware. I think it WOULD be nice if there was a story element to it all (and perhaps there is?) but it's not essential and the graphics have enough character and charm to carry it.

There you have it. standard platform game. How many of them came out in the last few years. Not enough. I liked R&C Future, but I'm really looking forward to some side scrolling platform with unlimited (ok 3 layers was it?) of creativity.
It's just that it's totally old school, meets Next-gen power. I remember having a heck of fun creating tracks for excite bike back in the NES days, and with a few other games that featured that kind of thing.

@SSJ4_Macd:
You have the single player around 50-60 levels. You also have the creation aspect that you can upload your levels, play others levels, unlock rewards trophies, etc.
You also unlock tools/components to use in the creation aspect in the single player part. You can use the eye toy to upload your pics to the creation aspect to use in game or any image you save on your hdd.You can also use the level for a chat room if you want because it has in game voice chat.
The creation tools allow you create pretty much whatever you can think of.You can go vertical, horizontal or whatever you like in your design.Setup the rewards you want on your level. You can make it a timed race level if you like.
There are logic chips in the creation tools also that allow you to give objects the ablity to move or react.

sounds ACE
although i disagree with the game mechanic of killing a player if he/she falls behind.
I remember playing sonic 2 on the sega megadrive. If a second player played as tails the same thng happened. Tails would die if offscreen for two long n then fly back in. ONly problem was it got SO frustrating playing as tails taht after a while you'd just put the controller down n wait till sonic got to a boss fight where there was no chance you could go offscreen n die.
I dunno, i just think its gonna rub it in the players face if they arent doing well (but still learning) if you kill them and move them. kinda like saying " hey noob, god your so slow, death for you, *BOOM*, n now we'll just automatically cross that bit for you. "
I mean what if they were JUST ABOUT to cross something, n feeling a real sense of achievement, n the auto death kicks in. that would be a real kick in the teeth. N new players will just say 'sorry im not playing, all i do is sit there and die whilst the other player runs off, i cant do it'
Just my two cents.

LittleBigPlanet is a fully realized 50+ level platforming game with 4 player co-op, online or off, and a storyline. I'm not pretending it's going to be an incredibly poignant story or anything, but it's there. Granted the creative tools are a big part of the sell, so if you're not interested in that aspect I can imagine you'd find the product to be undervalued.
Bottom Line:
You get the guitar and the CD.

Not sure what your point is.You really dont' care about the game and that's fine. But,to think that people who work hours upon hours to make something very creative should be almost given away is a insult.
Your comparing games on a lesser scale to LittleBigPlanet or games made years ago to LittleBigPlanet. There really isn't a comparison along those lines.
It's cool to understand a game but you should at least enlighten yourself.

@Snokie: Yes, exactly. Thank you.
I think that'd make a buyer out of quite a few people. No matter how much Wii Sports is simple, there are a ton of people who are content to just play that for the system for months. This game could do the same - move systems - but it's much harder to say "$400 system + $60 game" than "$250 system, comes with game."
Please note that I'm not bashing LBP, it looks interesting and I'd play it given the chance. But I'd hesitate to pay $60 for a next-gen (read:prettier) platformer.

seriously?
what part of 50+ levels shipping with the game don't you understand? This will be a full scrolling platformer with enemies, basic narrative, and boss fights… plus the entirety of the tools used to create all of those levels.
"self-applied textures" I guess you missed the part about importing phots from HDD or Playstation Eye then?

@Candlejack:
I think Skychrono's point about Wii Sports is that packing in a good game is good for selling systems.
Sure LBP is worth $60 (or more, to some), but imagine a PS3/LBP bundle. That's a system-seller.
Frankly, a PS3/LBP/Home combo might sell one to me :)

@Skychrono: No, it's still a very poor comparison. Maybe if wii sports had any value whatsoever and had any level of customization or creation... but it doesn't.
You do realize this game comes with a pre-made single player mode right? Maybe not, because it seems you really haven't been researching this game well before judging it.

When I first heard about this game, I was like, "okay, it's another platformer for the PS3," then I started seeing more screenshots and reading about what can be done with the game. I'm into action titles, sports titles (although, I'm boycotting EA Sports and Madden this year, I'm from the Chi-illa and they put a Packer on the cover), RPG's and shooters so this should be something that I can play with my young newphews and what not. Althrough, if I figure out a way to blow somebodies sack brains out, it's going to happen.

@Mpalm.: Sorry, I knew someone would jump on that - I meant to say "recent videos," or at least those with real enemies. The last gameplay videos I saw were back in March, with jumping on skateboards and climbing up mobiles.
A stupid minigame fest... hm. Well, it seems that this is similar - a quick graphics engine with nice shapes that have self-applied textures (Mii faces versus the admittedly better PS3 textures), a sensible physics engine, and a simple, easy to pick up premise. Maybe the comparison is more apt than you think.
@Neo-Senku: Mario Galaxy - which wasn't $60 - is a platformer that is closer to that value than this, in my mind. It's more fully realized, and you're paying for that innovation, not the chance to create your own. In a way, it's the difference between buying an artist's CD and buying a guitar - the guitar may give me more playtime, but I'm trying to hear something good from some one else.
@Benzak: I'm sorry, I do understand what you mean, but like I said a second ago... I hesitate to pay $60 for a Click-and-Play or something akin. I don't want to buy a game to hope someone makes something fun for it.

Looks amazing. I'm just curious about how created content is worked into the ecosystem.
On one hand, I look at Halo 3's forge, and what a disappointment it was. In short, building and sharing levels was a bit of a bust. Everyone just wants the Bungie levels.
On the other hand, I have great hope for Spore, since the creatures "created" by the player are naturally part of the gameplay. I think their idea of sharing entire species and civilizations is brilliant, mostly because it doesn't require extra effort by the creator or consumer.
In short, I wonder where LBP will fall between those two. Great looking game, though. Enough for a little PS3 envy :)

Doesn't the game have a ready-to-go single player mode? Isn't the creation aspect in-addition to that? I doubt the game would just come with nothing and you have to make something in order to play.
So I guess my point is: why are people bitching about it JUST being a creation tool? It's not. At least I don't think. The fact is, even if you're too dumb to make anything yourself you can download levels from others. The gameplay and physics look amazing, and there will be a countless supply of levels/enemies/items/whatnot. How THAT isn't worth $60 but a 10 hour shooter is...well that's just simply retarded.

The point you are missing is that the entirety of the 50+ levels that come with the game are all created from the same tools available for creating our own levels.
This isnt some basic shape editor like SSBB, this is a fully physics enabled platform engine. The creation happens in real time actually a part of the main game experience.
Every item in the game has realistic physics, every item in the game is fully customisable.
You dont need to be a level designer, absolutely anything can be created.

But I will point out that most of your points have already been rebutted, and quite nicely, mostly because you were so busy lambasting the 'lack of gameplay' aspect that you neglected to see that you were wrong about what LBP brings to the table. Case in point:
I hadn't seen the enemies in the game, since I hadn't seen any gameplay videos
Aaaaaand maybe that's why you're not 'getting' why people are so excited for the game. For everyone who doesn't "get it" by now, you probably won't until you get your hands on the game.
A couple of things:
Yes, you can create your own stories (the latest video on GT shows a boss battle with dialogue).
You can create your own enemies, contraptions, background objects, textures, and even include pre-made objects as rewards for completing your level. They're basically handing us a simple to use physics based platform creation tool that is only limited by the user's imagination.
If you're not a visually creative person this game must look awfully boring, and I'm sorry.
If you think it should be a shooter you must not have noticed that every other game that comes out nowadays is a SHOOTER, unless you mean a shmup, in which case every other game that comes out on Xbox Live is a shmup!
Either way I'm sure it will be possible to at least make something that resembles Super Turrican.

Of course games cost money, and resources, but this would be a good app to put with a system to bring gamers in - like Wii Sports did for the Wii. Instead, PS3 is getting Home for free, which is a lot less interesting.

Why the game is worth $60:
-It has a full featured single player with more than 50 levels.
-It has the kind of graphics you would expect of a fully featured next gen game; this doesn't look like a Pixel Junk game (which are good too).
-4 player offline co-op.
-A level editor that virtually guarantees that those 50 levels that come included will only be the tip of the iceberg of what you can download to expand the experience.
-A level editor which works in 4 player co-op.

@Snokie: A bundle with console is different from selling the game on PSN for sub-£30, is it not?
And a bundle doesn't mean that the game is for free, either...totally besides the fact that a good bundle like the MGS4 one was sold out instantaneously and then went over the retail price of $499 on every occasion.
@Skychrono: I don't pay more for innovation. What I was trying to get across is that fresh and unique ideas deserve more attention than all those sequels. Platforming or not, LBP is a game that reinvents the dying genre, a bit like Mirror's Edge. I do understand what you meant now. But LBP is far from a title like WiiSports. FAR from it. A bundle would only make sense in the way that MGS4 had one. To spike console sales a bit additionally to the increase just from the game.

@Accordion:
Thank you very much for the info! I'm looking forward to this game much more, as a result. Could I implore anyone to make a Toejam and Earl level? ;D

I preordered from EBGames like a month ago. I don't even own a PS3 yet! It actually wouldn't surprise me to see a LBP bundle with an 80GB PS3. If it shows up then I'll just get that instead.

@c0rnpwn:
Levels can be uploaded, linked to create continuing stories or collections. Objects that feature in a level can be awarded to players meaning you could create a simple trophy for others to collect, or give away a gameplay item you made such as a cannon or level structure.
Levels can also be rated so people who dont feel confident about creating themselves can always have access to the best of the community

@Farlander29: Wait. So you don't like Halo, a game which has sold a ton, but then say that poor PS3 game sales = bad games...so therefore good sales = a good game...but again, you don't like halo...
I just got a nose bleed.

@Farlander29: You've apparently confused "truth" with "your opinion". Or tossed a little of one with whole bunch of the other into a blender until it was the consistency of lukewarm barf. Thanks for that.

@thegunshow: In the same way that bundles always generate interest? Mario for the NES? Pictochat for the DS? Demo disks for the PSX? Solitare for the PC, even? Free stuff never hurts, as c0rnpwn thankfully pointed out.
I didn't demand it be free, but that would make it SO MUCH BETTER. If the biggest draw of the game is the user-added content, giving it to the users, like Second Life or something, would only be helpful to the community.
@jpneiswi: Thank God. I would never, EVER pay for *that*, even if it were cheap.

Well. This may very well be the best thing that mankind has ever done. Closely followed by air conditioners.

@Skychrono: Someone on the first page of comments had a link to a g4 video that has a sweet level, so at least you can see what an updated level with enemies looks like
The explosions at the end are great!

@Candlejack: The truth, eh? Ok, then.. the niche game I was referring to is MGS4. Yes, it's niche, because it's sales are lackluster and the only vocal supporters are those who want to have Hideo's babies. If Halo 3 (a game I neither own nor like) can blow your 10+ year old franchise out of the water, you have fucking problems.
As for the rest of the games, it's a fucking wash, and the sales numbers prove that as well. "2008 is the year of the PS3", HAH!

Wow...seeing the number of folks who bought or are planning to buy a PS3 based on this game, Sony would be batshit insane to not do a LBP bundle. They'll make an adorable SackBoy KILLING!

@Snokie: Home is free, so if they have a PS3/LBP bundle, you'll get Home too (whenever it comes out).
