Tokyo Game Show 2008 Tickets Go On Sale July 17th!
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 11, 2008
Even though E3 is next week, it's never too early to talk about the Tokyo Game Show. So! For those interested in attending TGS 2008, good news: You'll be able to buy tickets beforehand. That's right, convenience stores across the country will be selling them via Electronic Ticket Pia for ¥1,000 (¥1,200 with tax). That's ten bucks plus tax in U.S. money. But what does that matter? You'll have to be in Japan if you want to buy tickets early.
TGS tickets go on sale starting July 16th.

Would I need to know Japanese to be able to go around the expo?

I'm going to Japan for the Tokyo Game Show but I won't be there until October 9th. How do I get these tickets beforehand? Or can you buy them on the day(s) of the show?

@BlueWizard422: With savings like these, who can't afford to go to Japan on a whim!

I'm going this year! My friends and I living here in Kyushu have been planning this one out for awhile.
We might even do cosplay, just for fun - I was thinking of going as one of the Reapers from TWEWY.

@BlueWizard422: One of my best friends is in Tokyo doing a post-graduation, he went last year and he will probably go this year to. Lets us silently go green of jealousy...

Hope to see more details of 'Monster Hunter 3', 'The Sky Crawlers' and 'Castlevania Judgment' when TGS hits. All Wii titles,yes... sorry if I sound biased.

Argh, they're so cheap, but getting to Japan would be far more expensive!

bah, don't get my hopes up
I'm going to Japan this October and visiting the TGS as finale. And from the title I was already thinking that i can buy the tickets already (well, in a week).
Has anyone an idea if the tickets are limited or better said, if it's a problem to get one two weeks befor the show=

For those of you who are curious, the show IS open to the public, and you CAN buy tickets the day of (they're just a little more expensive). If I remember correctly from previous years, you can buy advanced tickets until the day of the show, at which point I believe you have to buy them at the gate, or buy them at a conbini at regular door price.
You do not need Japanese to get around the show, as most guides will know english, and many people out of each booth will also be able to speak english. However, do not expect the girls doing the game demos or helping people learn the controls to give you explanations in English. There are sometimes english placards set to help you understand the controls, however.
The tokyo game show website is at [tgs.cesa.or.jp] and they have an english link in the top corner.
As for myself, I've been going every year for a long arse time now, and for some reason I'm finding myself getting less and less into it for some reason. I'm sure that's not going to stop me from getting everyone in a minivan and driving up there this year as well, though. ;)

I learned 2 years ago never to go to a game show. After witnessing the horror that was the idolmaster presentation where they had hundreds of disgusting middle aged men drooling over what looked like 12 year old girls I lost faith in mankind. I dare not go to another game show becuase of it.
That aside, cool to people who wanna go see it. cant really beat 1000yen as long as they have removed any references to idol master or jpop in the place.

I don't see the rush, last time I queued for less than 5 mins, payed my 1000en and was inside the show with zero fuss. E3 organisers take note ;)

It really annoys the holy living hell out of me that no one in the US is willing to do even a small scale games show and make it affordable to the public. At best, like, what? We get some crummy event that's about $50 to look at?
Any large scale event is going to be closed off to the general public.. and cost a ton.. and if it's not closed off, then it'll still cost a ton.
WHAT is wrong with us, and why doesn't anyone hold issue with this, when Japan's biggest event is cheap as hell -and- fully open to the public?

Hi, there's a bit of a mistake in the post. Tickets sold in advance are 1000 Yen (including tax) while those bought the day of the show are 1200 Yen (also including tax). Japan may be expensive but they don't charge 20% tax!

Does it have something to do with dude huges?

@otimus:
PAX is the industries biggest game show now and its open to the public. Not the cheapest but not unaffordable either.

Why would anyone want/need to buy tickets 3 months early...
I usually buy them the night before in Akihabara.
Ironically enough, even if you buy tickets beforehand you STILL have to wait in an hour+ line to get in.

I went last year and just bought my ticket there. You don't need to know any Japanese unless you care about the shilling people at the booths are doing.
Unless you like long lines don't expect to play any game you ever heard of. There was an enormous line for Metal Gear last year. In this picture [flickr.com] all the people on the left are in line.
Unless of course you are interested in a game that no one in Japan cares about like Halo. Funnily enough the last day of the tokyo game show as the day before Halo 3 came out in the states and at the show the only people I saw playing Halo 3 were non-Japanese. [flickr.com]
It was great fun and I'd love to go again.
