Tonnes (Yes, Tonnes) Of LittleBigPlanet Info

We're excited about LittleBigPlanet. And maybe you are, too. LBP-centric site LittleBigPlanet Central is obviously jazzed as well and got a total of one hour and thirty minutes hands on with the game at this year's Comic Con, taking copious notes of things it noticed. Let's dive in:
Character Customisation
• There is a Tron suit you can wear in the game, along with a killzone helmet and mask.
• Not only that, but there are about 25 different materials and designs that you can choose to have your sackboy made out of, including 3 types of camo.
• There are held items that you can choose from, such as a wooden sword and a magic wand (a stick with a star on the top). You can't use them as weapons, but when you slap while holding an item you hit them with said item.
There's more after the jump. Lots more.
Level Editor
• For those of you that don't know, you can switch back and forth between flying and running around by pressing *down* on the d-pad.
• When everyone has a menu open, the menus auto-adjust to the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right corners to keep the screen clear.
• LBP comes with a nice 10 premade vehicles or so(I drove a lowrider!), but as with everything else you can edit them as you like.
• Logs burn. You can make a log, or anything out of wood, really, and set it on fire. We made a floor full of burning logs and then we drove a monster truck over them.
• There are "triggers" that you can place to have events happen right when you want them to. For example, you can make it so halfway through swinging on a rope across a gap, the rope snaps and you fall down to another area.
• Anything you can think of, you can make. Just be careful when making a "Sonic" level or a "Mario" level, because that won't fly on the servers. Name it something generic that won't warrant deletion.
• If you want to make carpet, you can. All you have to do is take a picture of some carpet, apply the sticker to something thin and soft(sponge, for example), and save the item.
• If you made a kickass vehicle, you can make that vehicle collectible through your level. For example, you could reward players who made it past a particularly difficult portion of your level with a buggy you made, which they could use at any time throughout making their levels. This applies to items, such as carpet, as well.
• The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters. The Construction Yard
• This is the level I got a chance to play three times.
• Eric (the producer) was really stressing the term "Coopetition", which is cooperating so you can compete for the collectible items and points. For example, there was a lever that would slide a girder across a gap. It requires two people(at least) to complete. One would move the girder across using a lever, the other would grab the chunk of sponge at the other side, which the first player would now bring back with the same lever. That sponge was required to reach a certain height, so you could collect more goodies. In my case, I stood on the sponge with a friend while another guy dragged it across, and right before we got there I slapped my friend off so I could have the stuff to myself. That, essentially, is coopetition.
• The developers love to hide goodies that you have to find later. I didn't notice all the stuff I could eventually collect until the third playthrough. If you've ever played Portal, and you know that usually there is more than one way to beat a level, the same applies here. The more difficult task you accomplish, the more collectibles they reward you with.
• At any point, you can bring up a sticker which is basically a live image recorded from your PS Eye. When you stick the image on a surface, it takes a picture at that moment, so you can tack yourself onto the walls in a level(or whatever else you feel like doing).Emoting
• Emoting is awesome. Using the d-pad, you can select three different degrees of sadness, anger, happiness, and fear. For example, you press up to smile, press it again to smile big, and press it again to be ecstatic with your tongue hanging out.
• If you hold R2, the right stick becomes a controller for your right hand. The same goes for L2, the left stick, and the left hand.
• The sixaxis controls which direction your head is facing, and it was surprisingly intuitive.
• If you click and hold L3, the sixaxis controls your hips instead of your head.
• Using a combination of these, I made my guy do a pretty kickass hula dance. I forced him to do it, though, so he was pretty scared at the time.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm thinking of how, if your ambitious (or obsessed... which I tend to be) you can actually take the time to biuld levels tailored to the people in your family that play. I have a sister inlaw that is metally challenged and loves to play the first few levels of mario, both original & Super... but the later levels are far to complex for her... I could biuld a dozen custom levels that would be fun but not too challenging. Same for my 4 year old Daughter that makes me play the video for her over and over again so she can watch it... no climbing, simple jumps and mostly straight forward level with lots of cute stuff to look at.
Then for my wife and best friends who are platform maniacs (all have trounced all the "lost levels" and any and all mario they can get their hands on) I can build the level from hell, with tricks (like the rope breaking into the pit, as mentioned before) or even set up color coded ropes that you have to pick the right one to swing on and the wrong on breaks...
I just see unlimited potential in this game and I believe it's not overstating to say this game will be a big difference maker for Sony.
I can't wait

Shouldn't that be "The right stick controls the left hand"?
Otherwise it will be really awkward when you're looking at your sack boy and you'll be controlling the hand on his left side...

@notoriousEIC: Theres alot of people in this sea of mindless zombies which love the idea and that have TOO MUCH faith in the other zombies next to them.
We're going to see way too many cock and vag levels with VERY poor design.
Sure the tools are easy to use, but again you'll end up only playing 2 or 3 user made levels ALL the time when you realize how bad all the other ones are.

@Datheron: Agreed. With what the toolsets look like. You don't have to be a expert Forza car painter or something to make a fun game. It's meant to be easy to get into and enjoy for everyone and the person who is very creative will come up with ideas the team didn't even think of.

@Datheron:
Yeah, i totally agree that the interface looks very slick and easy to use, which with this game is obviously of paramount importance. Basically, it has to be easy enough that youngsters can mess around and enjoy it, but deep enough that people can literally spend weeks perfecting their levels.
I think it's going to be one of the only games that could possibly last forever....hehe

@nottsville: Fair enough; if you don't like platformers, since this is one, can't do much to convince you to like it.
But I'm trying to explain why people are so excited. Creation tools have never been easy to use - even the simplest scripting languages and frameworks (again, think Gerry's Mod) are quite complicated and have a ton of options, alienating most potential users by sheer volume alone. LBP looks to make creation much easier, and the hope is that we'll discover a lot of great creators who never learned to program or gave up designing their games/levels because the tools were a bitch to use.
Again, look at the success of Spore's Creature Creator; I think they said that there's been more creatures created than species on earth. The lesson is simply that with the right tools, you can get a lot of mileage from otherwise uninspired users, and hopefully this will prompt other developers to explore the possibilities of user-generated content.
Not sure if this is your cup of tea, but on the PS1 there were these two creators: Fighter Maker and RPG Maker. They were way ahead of their time and looked + sold like crap, but if people looked at LBP and it is a success, I'd be psyched about the possibility of playing "games" that feature intuitive toolsets for me to create my game, in any genre.

For the same reason anyone posts anywhere. I didn't know that you had to want the game to have an opinion on it.
@Datheron:
This is what i'm saying. I think i'm in the minority. I'm not bothered about playing the game itself, never mind the user created stuff. I'm not into platform games, that's it really.
I totally agree that there are going to be some great levels that will equal the levels that are already on the disk. For people that are interested in game design i can see why they would be excited about getting their hands on it.
I'm really going to contradict myself here. I think that if every review on the planet says it's the best game ever made, and that it redifines gaming as we know it, then obviously i'll check it out.
I just don't know if it will or not.

Posted 7:52 PM 29/7/08
@nottsville: Well, all those levels in those games that you play? Those were designed by people.
I mean, of course it's nice to have professional level designers make levels for you, but don't underestimate the creative power of the masses. If we assume that the game sells a million copies, and:
- 1% of the buyers are actually making levels
- 1% of those making levels are actually decent
- it takes a week to make a level (the Sony presentation took two days)
Then we're talking about 100 levels of content every two weeks. Nothing to scoff at.
As for the "no interest in playing anyone else's levels", it's the same as watching those Gerry Mod videos, messing with the Spore creature creator, or customizing your Mii. The majority of stuff will be crap, but again, the sheer numbers will guarantee a large set of really good creations. It kinda applies to, y'know, the game industry itself.

@MentalNote: Eh, it's more that Sony games don't support 1080i by default, and developers have to specifically make their games support the older format. It's not really a question of whether the hardware is good enough (it is), but if the devs care enough to implement it.
Although I think I read somewhere that Criterion stated w/ current tools it only takes an hour or so to add it in.

Can you imagine the scope of what could be made by this game. You could have an area where when you open the door to get inside, it's opening moves a lever which rolls a ball, which knocks over a line of dominoes and so on until it drops the door on the otherside of the area. So it's like a race to get to the end before the door closes.

Hmm...my longest running gaming buddy is salivating over this.
It's the first idea that's actually intrigued me towards the PS3 at all, given that there are no more exclusives for the console and I have no need to play BluRay discs when I realised that the limits of the human optic nerve come into play long before the quality of the picture has anything to do with it at such high definition.
I still can't wait to see how my friend will lovingly recreate Sapphire Hill Zone, Shiitake Kingdom 1-1 and suchlike though, but I still can't justify the cost of a PS3 for one game. Good luck to LBP though. Sounds like something the Wii could benefit from.

To the people questing what the big deal is let me say these things.
First of all, it's been a long while since we had a high quality 2-d platformer period (I wanna say New Super Mario Bros. for the DS? That was the last big one). That alone would have my money. But the customization seems pretty robust. If you aren't into that sorta thing, that's fine. But for people who are into level design, etc, there aren't a lot of games that offer level design opportunities. Certainly not on the level of LBP. Lastly, if you aren't into level design, you can still play LBP with downloadable content.
If you aren't interested in the game, that's fine. You're welcome to has your preferences. But it's plain to see that a lot of time and care is going into this game, and if it maintains the level of polish it's had, it will be a hit.

Yeah, we all know that user created mods never go anywhere. Like that horrible "Counter Strike" worked out. Oh, and anyone remember that pathetic "Team Fortress?" Or when someone tried to edit the classic Quake deathmatch game into that stupid kids game of Capture the Flag.
Nothing but a huge series of failure and regret there.
/sarcasm off
The truth is, I have spent more time playing mods, user created levels, and other things the creators could have never imagined than I have the original material. Up until now, it's been the solely the realm of the PC to do this. The fact that they are starting to allow it on consoles is not only encouraging, it's the way of the future.

@LlamaNL: If you didn't already know that the level design is not a "feature", but the bulk of the game, you got some research to do my friend. Premade levels are only going to be included as a means of control tutorials and part unlocking, from what I've read.
@nottsville: Same thing. The game IS the level editor.
@Jaysius: Of course there are gonna to be a multitude of genital-themed levels! Look up Spore on Youtube! But, like almost any game with a content editor of some kind, there are going to be plenty of gems floating around in the sea of secretions. Spore, as I've already mentioned, is a recent example, but even going all the way back to Age of Mythology and Counter Strike. When the masses are given to tools(or even just the source code) to make great stuff, there are gonna be enough people making great stuff that you won't really have to get stuck with 2 or 3 levels. From what we've been shown, this game surpasses almost any other game in the user-friendliness of it's tools.
Yeah, it's a platformer, but it's what you, or anyone else, makes out of it.

I will. Even if it got delayed another year and didn't already have a release date in October like it does now, I'd still wait it out and get it eventually. A good game is a good game and waiting a bit longer for it rarely changes that.
This game has pretty much the same draw as Spore, except it focuses on level customization rather than creature customization, so I'd expect it to do quite well. Also, after playing custom maps in WarCraft III, seeing the custom mods to HL2 and even UT3, I have quite a bit of faith in the creativeness of the online community to drive this game.

If nothing else, I expect LBP to revolutionize UI design tools. When you're creating some HTML layout, Flash, Java, C#, Python, etc. application today pay attention to how lame your tools are and how little they have evolved in the last 20 years. LBP appears to have a radically different interactive approach that allows for depth and complexity and expandability of what is available to the designer all packed into a neat, easy to navigate and pickup construction UI.

@kasplat: To be fair, the things you've listed are programming languages and not necessarily level development tools. Tools more analogous to LBP would be UnrealEd (Unreal Tournament) or WorldEdit (Warcraft).
And the common thread across all these tools is the eventual need for some type of scripting, i.e. "programming". Making games is hard, and it usually takes something as flexible as a typed language to convey the complexity found in most games. I'm most curious about how Media Molecule has dealt w/ this with a pure UI, but you're right, hopefully it'll inspire other creation tools to up their UI's and if nothing else, prompt a wave of "creator" games a la PS1 Fighter Maker. =)

@Mattz: "I have no need to play BluRay discs when I realised that the limits of the human optic nerve come into play long before the quality of the picture has anything to do with it at such high definition"
This is, in fact, not true.
Firstly, the human optic nerve can utilize up to 20 megapixels, which is about the same quality you'll get with HD. (Without HD you'll get a maximum of half that.)
Secondly, there's a lot of other things that play a role in what you see. Have you ever seen a recording of a TV on another TV? There you'll see lots of lines crossing the TV on screen. This is because; even though the TV you're watching and the TV on that TV have equally many pictures per second, the updating of the pictures do not match each other. This is why you can actually tell the difference between for example a 60Hz TV and a 100Hz TV, even though the human eye can only register 60Hz. The same goes for HD quality pictures. The image you see is not an exact match of what is shown on screen, which is why you'll actually benefit from using HD.
I understand if that didn't make any sense at all, since it's hard to put in writing, but trust me, I know what I'm talking about, since it's part of my education.
Back on topic; I can't wait for ths game. If this won't "save" the PS3, nothing will. I'm afraid people often are too narrow-minded to understand why this game will revolutionize gaming as we know it, ESPECIALLY if many people buy this, since others will later follow.
