Treyarch Offers Apologies To Gearbox Software
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on July 1, 2008
Just when we thought we were set for a good developer versus developer war of words, we find out that Treyarch has taken the high road, apologising for remarks made about Gearbox Software and its Brothers In Arms series. You may remember that earlier we quoted Activision producer Noah Heller had a few unkind words for Hell's Highway, especially in comparison to Call of Duty: World At War.
JD, Community Manager here at Treyarch wrote on the official Xbox forums of the Gearbox-aimed slam, "We want to let everyone know that we found those remarks offensive, and they do not in any way represent the feelings of any developer at this studio or at Activision. We hold all of our peers in the development community in the highest regard. We have nothing but respect for the guys and gals at Gearbox".
Hugs all around.
A Message from Treyarch [Xbox Forums - thanks, Beau!]

Too late, guys. I'm not spending my $60 on your WWII rehash, only so that you can trash developers far more talented than you.

@DukeOfPwn:
The guy that said it was from Activision, not Treyarch.
It's good that this was written. It makes Heller look like more like a jackass, since he's got only himself to stand by the statement.
Instead of a being the head of a cocky company, he's just a prick now.

Activision must be feeling pretty comfortable throwing around GH games left and right.

Why doesn't the Treyarch team start throwing stones in the glass houses Eidos and Codemasters built with Conflict Denied Ops and Turning Point? Ah, the middle school recess session that game blog journalism can become at times!

Somebody needs to keep that moron on a leash. People are already walking into World At War with high skepticism due to Treyarch's less then impressive previous efforts on Call of Duty, and Hell's Highway already looks like a game thats going to be giving COD5 some strong competition for best WWII shooter this year; Last thing Activision needs is some dope shooting his mouth off and making people even less interested then they already were.
I hope the higher-up's put Heller in his place by putting a diaper on his mouth. Just to make sure no more bullshit will fly out of it.

I kept thinking how Gearbox would respond. I'd like to think it'd be something like "Weren't these the guys who made a Call of Duty, and they weren't named Infinity Ward?"
...Lame. I know.

The fact that Treyarch are saying nice things to a rival developer because of what was said by an Activision guy- that gives me some respect for them.
I like seeing people getting along, because we've always got the whole Itagaki thing for drama, and trash talking usually comes off as juvenile.

Best he never make those remarks again (not like Treyarch is even worth making them to begin with). The game community is young and only just starting out, we don't need developers shouting out who's got the bigger dick. Respect between colleagues should be the norm in all media, I'd hate to see games get worse.

I don't even get why the producer would feel like he would have to make the remark. Brothers in Arms and Call of Duty have established themselves as the polar opposites in the World War 2 FPS genre. While one is about cinematic displays of bravado, the other delves into portraying an authentic and tragic depiction of the war. Really I don't see why either game shouldn't have a place in video games.

@Mommar: I liked the first Spider-Man quite a bit, but I found the 'open-world' approach of the second game to be neat but filled with nothing interesting to do at all. And Ultimate Spider-Man I found to be visually quite nice but the gameplay was pretty dull. Of course, we all have different opinions. Cheers!

So...
It turns out it wasn't Treyarch in the first place, and moreover, Treyarch actually have the balls to stand up to the publisher and say they disagree with the sentiments and apologise to Gearbox...
So, do you reckon we are we going to see apologies from the following people for their attacks on Treyarch in the first post???

If this follows the typical American trend, Heller will be forced to enter 'developer sensitivity training' for his apparent mental instablity.

When did Activision get taken over by a douche squad? This really sucks for Treyarch, having the publisher drag them down with his arrogance and douche-ness. First Kotick's ridiculous pretending Rock Band doesn't exist, now this horseshit. Way to undercut your developers and gain notoriety as a dickwad at the same time.

@KeroseneClimax: Agreed on all your points.
@darktorns: Like Gerstmann from Gamespot.
I usually tend to respect developers unless they develop shovelware (look at about half the Wii games at Wal-Mart), buy smaller companies to do their dirty work for them (EA), or arrogant developers who think their game is going to kick so much ass when it's mediocore at best (Ubisoft and Activision). This is a classic example of somebody putting their own foot in their mouth.

The previous comment by Treyarch team filled me with rage beyond that I have had with any EA Game Developer before it. I cannot believe a company would be so blind that they cannot realize that their greatest competition is making an amazing game so the only thing they can do is insult it. I'm glad that the company isn't full of people like that, at least the Community manager realized this and apologized.
Their last game call of duty 3 was a complete bore, i had more fun digging out my copy of Call of Duty for the xbox and playing it again.

Hell, you can tell by watching the video of that interview that the other Treyarch guy was backing away from Heller while he was flapping his prodigious jowls. His comments were way off base and really made him look like a douchebag. Worse, his comments cast a pall over the entire Treyarch team, which really isn't fair. They're now all associated with that one dick running his mouth.

For the record if you compare BIAHH and COD5 trailers, BIA has it won hands down IMO.
