Two More Tales Games Coming, Both For Handhelds
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on July 4, 2008
How many Tales games are already on their way? Dunno. We've lost count. Especially now that we know there are two more coming, one for the PSP, one for the DS. The PSP one's called Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, which will feature the same main character as the upcoming Tales of Vesperia for the 360. The DS one's called Tales of The Heart (pictured). Both will be out in Japan by the end of the year, no word yet on Western dates.

Now if only Bamco will stop hating US gamers and release these too. Also, release Tales of Innocence already. You're releasing Tales of Vesperia before the previous main Tales franchise game.
Oh well, I guess I have to learn Japanese and import it.
Also, make Tales of the World better and not just a string of fetch quests.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa... what? They're not called Tales of "Something-ia"? What is this preposterousness? I demand a rename.

Well aren't you looking different Tales Of The Heart. Now lets hope the storyline of this new Tales of game can follow suit. It's getting a little old seeing the same tired RPG/anime tropes always being shown off so predominately in a Tales game.

actually, looking elsewhere, i don't see any indication that the main character is the same as the 360 game.. you might want to change that ^^;

Damn, Tales of the World 2 doesn't have a create-a-character? That was half the appeal of the first to me.

Since when did a Tales game used 3D characters instead of cel-shade?

Well, it'd be nice if they brought the first DS Tales game stateside first. I don't get it. The series has down well in the US and on Nintendo platforms. What's the holdup, Namco Bandai?

I too demand Tales of Innocense... but oh well. We should just demand Tales of the Tempest as well. That's two whole DS tales games that we missed out on!
I do miss the -ia naming style. At least Vesperia is sticking to it.

@AngryTankManMax:
Sadly Namco Bandai already said word that the US/EU will not get Tales of Innocence don't keep your hopes up for this one since there is a possibility that we are not getting Tales of Hearts but since Tales of the World was already released here then we might get the sequel. Sad that Tales of Rebirth PSP port will not come over unless Namco Bandai changes their minds.

"Tales of the World", while an awesome name for a game, is, in practice, kind of hideously boring. Or at least the first one was. And I'm saying this as someone who got a free copy, so you know that means something.
Basically, the Tales of the World "series" (I guess that's what it is, now, with a sequel announced) stars characters from all the "Tales of" games, somehow summoned into the same world / time period by some demon with evil intentions to summon together a band of famous warriors who might accidentally kill him.
In the original, you play as a kid who wants to be a Hero; you become a Hero by relying on Other Heroes, who join your party.
In short, where Final Fantasy: Dissidia is Kingdom Hearts without Disney, Tales of the World is Kingdom Hearts without Disney or Final Fantasy.
Also, as you can see from this image, in Tales of the World, everyone is leveling up constantly.
That said, really looking forward to Vesperia. Might wait a month to purchase it, as every other Tales of game seems to drop radically and disgustingly in price within months of their release.
They are all (except Symphonia and The World) brutally entertaining, as far as I'm concerned. The Japanese videogame equivalent of soap operas.

Why hasn't Kotaku done anything about the new Tale of game coming to the PS3. There's a freaking magazine article about it in a JP mag.

Tales of The Heart, nice.
I am so sick of the USA not getting any tales DS games. Tales of the Tempest, no, Tales of Innocence, no. Tales of Innocence looked awesome. We probably won't get Tales of The Heart either, i hate the fact that Namco is screwing us over.

I would much prefer more next gen tales, but I have a DS and PSP so I'm okay with these.
And maybe they should release tales of Destiny on the Playstation store.

@Sailorcancer: You mean the one where Famitsu said "we've heard nothing of a PS3 Tales coming but we sure hope there is one" and put up a big question mark on a frame labeled as PS3? Maybe it's because it's not based on any substantial rumor/fact at all.

@108: I found Tales of the World: RM1 to be very addictive, far from boring. Abyss' battle system + job change system + large cast of Tales characters is a great formula. I'd say from a gameplay perspective it's one of the best Tales, just a shame the story blew.

@Grocerspride: "And maybe they should release tales of Destiny on the Playstation store."
When they just released a PS2 remake of it and a "Director's Cut" of the PS2 remake of it last year?
Are you nuts!!
There's no way the money-grubbers would allow that.

I'd wish they'd go ahead and releace the new Tales of Destiny, Tales of destiny 2 (the real one, not the miss-named tales of eternia), and tales of rebirth. those games are great and deserve translation. funny how japan keeps their best ones that happen to have 2d battles while we get the 'mostly' bad 3d ones (with fiew exceptions, like Tales of the Abyss)

@TomSkylark: They have sold okay over here in the States. Of the 10 million Tales units sold, 87% were in Japan, with the US coming in second with 8%. So not a million yet, all told, despite some pretty "big" releases in the series history.
Since I may buy 2-3 Tales games this year, depending on what gets released, they at least have me hooked...

Since I basically locked myself away from society to beat Tales of Symphonia, it's probably a good idea to get me a handheld Tales so I can play when I'm on the subway...and on my lunch break at work...walking back to my apartment...sigh, I <3 Namco Bandai.

This will likely be the third Tales game for the DS to not come to the US.
I think they are probably wary because it does not seem that JRPGs do very well on the DS in the States.
Of course that might have something to do with Square-Enix's policy of releasing all their games at $40, which comes across as a bit of a rip off to all but the most hardcore JRPG fans.

I don't where anyone got the idea JRPG's don't do well on the DS. Atlus doesn't seem to have any problems there...

Namco Bandai (in America) is more interested in pimping Soul Calibur, Tekken and other animu franchise games that can sell for a bit more profit than niche market RPGs would. Why? Because any frat-partying jock with half a C-Note to spend can purchase a Tekken game in America because he and his buddies can get some drunk enjoyment out of it before selling it back to Gamestop in order to purchase Madden or Need for Speed. Will he be likely to purchase some colorful-looking box with that Japanimation shit on the cover? Nope. He can't tell by looking at the box what the game's about. Madden has football guy on the cover; he knows what Madden's about. Need for Speed has car on the cover; he knows what Need for Speed is about.
The casual game market is where profits come from (which has seen more PS2 releases than Wii releases can EVER approach), and unfortunately, our beloved Tales games are not part of that market. Altus can release JRPGs in America because their Japanese parent company's lineup is mostly....JRPGs. So when they release a game in America from their lineup, it's probably a JRPG. Namco Bandai has bigger franchises to publicize, so when it comes time for them to release a few games in America, they'll likely release games from the larger and higher-selling franchises (again, Tekken and Soul Calibur) rather than the franchises which typically haven't sold as well (Tales). This is also why Nintendo of America won't release Mother 3. When you sell truckloads of Mario, Link, and Samus, why bother releasing a little game like Mother 3? Nobody knows what this Mother thing is. There's no name recognition here. We could use the Earthbound moniker, but that wouldn't guarantee us any more copies sold to our biggest demographic of 10 and under.
The industry's rough, folks, and there really isn't a thing that fan outcry can do about it. The best we can do is wait and hope.

They went with tales of heart????? I forgot the other 2 names that could have been chosen though, I think they were Harmonia, and the howling, w/e I guess I'll be playing it in Japanese with a translation guide, cuz I can't see them publishing this, since they kinda skipped on 2 DS games already =(

Tales of the World was a boring level up-fest. Honestly, all I did in that game was fight, level, fight, level. I didn't beat the story nor was I interested in it.
Innocence looked amazing, and since technically it's the official 9th game in the main series, I don't understand why they never brought it here or why it never got the same attention as the others. They are bringing spinoffs like Tales of the World and Tales of Symphonia 2, but not Innocence?
TALES OF HEARTS BETTER COME OUT IN US!

"The PSP one's called Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, which will feature the same main character as the upcoming Tales of Vesperia for the 360."
As far as I can tell, Yuri is one of the many Tales characters in ToW2. He's not 'the main'.
I'm still hoping that Innocence gets licensed for the US. I really don't want to pay $54 for the import version.
