Upload Your Eden Gameplay Directly to YouTube
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:00 AM on July 25, 2008
Eden is pretty freaking cool on lots of neat little levels. Gameplay and aesthetic aside, one of the coolest features the game will be supporting is the ability to upload in-game videos directly from your Playstation 3 to YouTube.
Dylan Cuthbert, president and executive producer, of Q-Games, says this new ability will revolutionise how people talk about games.
The YouTube upload feature is going to revolutionise how people share tips. Up until now it has been limited to people with video capture equipment, but from now on, anyone can record their game and upload it directly to YouTube from within the game! It is as simple as pushing one button to start and one button to stop and upload, and there is no affect on the gameplay thanks to the power of the PS3 and its abundance of SPU processors.
The YouTube people are pretty excited too, pointing out that this is likely just the first Playstation 3 game to do this.
We've already seen the significant positive impact for games like Spore and Mainichi Issho and how gamers share & show off their creations. We look forward to the day when having YouTube upload support in games will be a standard feature. As Q-Games President Dylan Cuthbert said on the Playstation Blog, "The YouTube upload feature is going to revolutionise how people share tips". We wholeheartedly agree!
I hope more, bigger games will start to include this amazing feature.

Youtube seems to be the new trendy thing to attach to your game. Consider capture cards marginalized...

It's a great marketing strategy for them, and probably nothing else to gamers. Okay, maybe not so much. It's a good feature for gamers who like posting videos or video walkthroughts, it will speed up and make the process easy. But it will not be an advantage for every gamer, whether he/she is looking for a walkthrough or not. I mean, there will be countless of them soon enough, to upload this you just need to press a button!
However, countless videos will do no harm to Q-games, more chances of a potential buyer bumping against the game!

I like this feature, and I'd love to see it implemented with more titles. While I can't imagine wanting to upload videos from this particular game, there are plenty of other games I'd love to record myself playing to share with friends, or see videos of my friends playing. As for the "junking up" of youtube, I don't care. Having video gameplay sharing more accessible is more important to me.

This is a cool feature but they should put a limit. Like 1 upload a month or a week or something. It'll flood with people recording just to record.
@fire ze missiles: From what I get, you're basically spiderman trying to collect stuff. You stick to things, and can swing around to collect other dots. Some platforms can only be stuck to for a few seconds until they go boom.
Kinda cool, kinda not.

@MrBionic: Agreed. I can see entertaining a number of people through personal ineptitude or just sheer bizarre occurrence...
... but "tips" is going to have to come from someone else.
Also...
I can imagine the feature being pretty cool if it could be integrated into the game to "watch" as well.
Like quick clips of where all the goddamn pigeons (GTA), flags (Assassin's), or orbs (Crackdown) are through in-game, player-submitted video tips... rather than searching the web or buying hint books.
Some may consider something like that a "cheat"... but, honestly, just having the patience to bother with some of those things is worthy of an achievement... actually doing it sans-assistance is akin to mental illness.

Oh god, that is so irresponsible. I'm hyped for this game, but the last thing we need is 3,000,000 videos of an illegibly small dot jumping around on Youtube. It's crapped up with enough game videos as it is.
*cough*
Please charge $20/mo for this feature or host videos of your game on your own servers...

I have the image of 100,000 different videos of Pixeljunk Eden going up on Youtube, with every single one having a comment along the lines of "wtf is this thing?".
Doesn't sound particularly exciting.
And if you look on Youtube, most of the people with "videocapture equipment" taping their games aren't doing anyone any favours.

@MrBionic:
I think these types of games offer a change-of-pace to the other games people play more often. Yeah it does get boring if you play them too long, but for me they're great to have around when I've played too many hours of FPS, RPG, RTS or sports games and just need something different.
They're also kind of fun when you're wasted and your motor skills aren't as sharp as they should be for the other games. Oohhh, the colors! But I have to admit I've fallen asleep while playing some. It could have also been because of the tranquil music some of these games have.

@dv8godd: It's a feature I would use, not to show people my skillz, but to let people laugh with me at my utter uselessness. Also, yesterday on GTAIV, I was doing a chase mission (SURPRISE!), chasing two dudes on motorcycles, and I slammed into a tree going high-speed, went through the windshield, and slammed into one of the guys on the motorbike, knocking him off it, into the path of an oncoming car, killing him.
*THAT'S* the kind of thing I wish I could record. lol.

I can already see the thoughts in everyone's head as more and more games start to adopt the feature...
"man, now I see why dv8 hangs out on Kotaku and posts such long comments... the dude absolutely SUCKS at games!"
Most of my tips would be "don't do what I'm doing, cuz I'm freakin' lost!" Maybe if they put it in UT or some other FPS with K&M... other than that, I'm screwed.
But other than that... this could be really damn cool for people like me who are constantly freakin' lost.

@iNime: Who cares? Honestly if they were one day behind the official announcement it would be old news. Or where is it that we draw the line, 3 days? It doesn't really matter. When I go to a news site I like to know that they are putting all news on a news site. It's better than missing stuff just cos they didn't notice it as soon as whoever first got the news up.

Y'know Brian, further to your Nintendo 'peripherals market' comments on Bonus Round, I have to agree, to the extent that I think Sony and MS are actually ahead of Nintendo in terms of casual games.
MS have XBLA which is well supported, but given that MS is still focused on the hardcore and their arcade console bundle strategy was half-hearted in effort, I think that XBLA is as far as they go.
Sony on the other hand, in trying to attain a 50/50 on the hardcore/casual market this time around [after last generation's predominantly hardcore marketing], I think have overstepped their own balance - and are possibly putting a bit too much effort into casual titles [but I think its more that they're simply not focusing on hardcore games enough, rather than there are 'too many' casual games]. That said I think Sony have been the company to really corner casual gaming. They match XBLA in terms of games of a certain quantity i.e. what Super Stardust HD is to Geometry Wars, but they vary in content right through to titles like Echochrome and Flow, whereas XBLA is primarily arcade shooters.
Adding to that, are titles like R&C: QFB, which are not only like a 'half game', bridging the connection between a typical downloadable PSN title and a 'full' Blu Ray title, but also ties into main BR franchises. Now in adding stuff like this, I think its fair to say that the casual market belongs to Sony, and Nintendo indeed own the peripherals market. The application of Nintendo's peripherals is what concerns us.
'What's next for the balance board?' is more prominently uttered than 'I think THIS game could use the balance board'.

@iNime: Can we stop having posts about how something being reported here isn't "new" just because it may have been reported somewhere else some time ago? Not everyone reads everything, and it really doesn't matter where something was reported before. This is the first *I've* heard about this, (among many other posts that people continually feel they have to be "omg, seen it!" about), and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
It's as tiring as hearing "First!"

I think it's neat, but would have more applicability for other genres. The biggest use for a feature like that would be within an MMO. Obviously, racing games, FPSs, and other twitch games could use it. So could strategy intesive games. Uploading a video of Kessen's Battle of Sekigahara would be awesome for me and anyother Japanese history buffs. A more relavent example would be uploading videos of Elefunk levels. So yes. While I don't have any deep desire for Pixeljunk Eden, I think the feature is cool, and should be more widespread.

i kinda pity youtube. this ties directly into the Vimeo announcement that they don't want your WoW raid videos anymore because it's just too much glut in their systems.
now EVERYONE, EVERYTIME they play this, will be shoving their 'unique experience' up onto youtube's harddrives, for no one to view in the future.
keeping it limited to one or two uploads a week would seem like it would make people choose "oh THAT one session was cool" instead of "upload everything, all the time, always"

why the hell is the majority of comments negative? they implemented a feature which allows you to do what people already do like right now ... and again ... one more time ... another one uploaded to youtube and here comes another. They have added a way for users to get good quality video specific for youtube so they don't need to own a capture card or tivo device or a video camera. If you don't wanna use it step aside but for those that do wanna use it this is a huge step forward. The game itself is neat but isn't going to blow anyones socks off unless your calling in life is to grow plants as a small creature.
