Valve Considering Re-Releases Of Older Games Over XBLA
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on July 29, 2008
Why's Portal being released on Xbox Live Arcade? Valve say it's to give people who otherwise missed it a chance to catch up, see what all the fuss is about. When asked by OXM whether that meant other Valve games might be seeing a similar release, Doug Lombardi responded:
We'll certainly consider it. If you look at what we've done on Steam, we try to make all our games available and we're always reviewing the prices to keep them current. We'd love to do that, but Portal: Still Alive is our first step at doing that beyond the PC.
First step, but probably not the last. Valve love money as much as the rest of us.

@Drake Lake: Palms Fitted Black:
Well, in defense, Newell brought this upon himself by shit-talking the PS3 at every possible opportunity, delivering a shitty port of a game he developed to the system and then not supporting it at all, and then considering releasing his games on the competing platform without so much as a word of consolation to PS3 owners.
Newell hates the PS3, so it's not much of a leap to make that PS3 owners aren't exactly keen on Valve at the moment.

@Arsenicberyllium: ACTUALLY... one of the news that came up this past E3 about the "new" 360 Experience (or whatever it's called) is a new tiered pricing system that will have larger games to come at $20 bucks that were hinted as being much larger then the current cap of over 350 MB. my numbers may be a bit off but that's the gist of it.

Something tells me compression won't be a serious issue, especially with the 360 launching with a 60GB hard drive soon. With the fall update coming with game install abilities as well, the 360 going forward will undoubtedly receive some significant storage upgrades. I'm sure that XBLA size constrains will eventually be adjusted to take advantage of the extra size as well.

By the way, the comments you made in the sales data post recently were uncalled for and immature. The thrashing made by others certainly indicated no one else held the same sentiment you did. Certainly was a good laugh!

@DARTH_TIGRIS:
Yeah, exactly. It's pretty well-established that Newell hates the PS3 specifically because it uses OpenGL instead of DirectX, and he's one of the people behind DirectX from back when he worked at Microsoft. That old favoritism never faded when he formed Valve, and as such any architecture that doesn't run on DX is like Sanskrit to him.
Basically...he's lazy and stubborn.

If the PC is the main platform that you develop for, I would imagine that the PS3 would be frustrating. PS3 games are released on the PS3. PC games can usually be released on the PC and 360 with little effort, relatively speaking of course. So Gabe doesn't like the PS3 for that reason. Its all good.
Even if Half Life is released, its an old game. I couldn't even stomach playing the Marathon trial. I guess there is a market for them, so we'll see.

@Arsenicberyllium: Clearly if you read the quote carefully, you will not that's not his hate... that was hate gifted to him by Sony so technically the hate people claim Gabe has for the PS3 was originally Sony's therefore Sony hates the PS3. Now, I'm no psychology professor but before the PS3 feels that it needs love from Valve, it needs to deal with the broken relationship between it and Sony.
I think people should help Sony and the PS3 reconcile rather then dragging Mr. Newll into this o_O

@kommanderk:
Exactly. They farmed it out to a known-to-be-shit developer to save money and didn't care at all about the game at all, despite clearly spending a lot more time and effort on the 360 version.
Valve had the money and the manpower to do it themselves, but they chose to outsource it as a show of distaste for the PS3 platform, as if it was 'beneath them' to even touch it. The PS3 port, since it wasn't done by the original team (or even a competent one) ended up being inferior, thus letting Newell's pre-release PS3 bashes have some merit in a "see, TOLD YOU SO" kind of manner.
Newell hates the PS3, which means Valve hates the PS3. And if he's going to play fanboy, he'd better be ready to face the tide of people calling him an asshole for it. Fanboys are assholes no matter how much money they make.

And honestly, just because Valve's a PC dev doesn't give them the right to shit-talk the PS3, the Wii, Macs, or anything else like Newell so loves to do. Their domain is the PC, so they should stick to that and not go out insulting things they're clearly unwilling to experiment with.

@kommanderk: Man there is no excuse for the way Valve treated PS3. And since the thing is just silicon and metal, PS3 owners are the one that have to feel offended for it. When I hear "PS3 is a waste of time" I hear "PS3 owners are a waste of time" because the console itself won't buy the games, but the owners will. In short Valve doesn't have time to work for their money. And what you said just proved the point even more: they didn't choose the team. If that were true, it almost sounds like Valve just threw the IP in the toilet and EA happened to be in the sewers and cooked it there for PS3. It's obviously not what happened, but it's probably close. Many companies focus on only one platform, but no exclusive compay has ever been a bigger elitist douche than Valve.

The point is, it's their IP. They shouldn't have let EA do the port if they didn't think they'd do a good job, and they certainly shouldn't have let Gabe run his mouth like an asshole at every opportunity.
You don't see Square Enix saying "lol the 360 sucks it's terrible to develop for" when working on multiplatform, and you don't see Infinity Ward whining about the PS3 while working on their games. Or Capcom, or Namco, or Epic. Newell's comments were blatant bashes of a system his company was delivering a game for, which were uncalled for and totally unsubstantiated.
Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they're a troll.

I've got them all on disc and my steam account. I still feel Valve are amazing at offering value for money.
I also own HL2 twice, with the orange box on the 360.
The problem I have is before they bring this stuff to the arcade, fix the orange box by fixing up TF2. Its a amazing game and with the updates from the PC version with some fixed netcode I believe it could have a bigger audience.
